So my trolling motor just messed up on me. It's a 45lb thrust minn kota and the blades won't spin unless I just spin them by hand, then they'll work for a bit and cut off again. I pulled the blade off thinking something was tangled around the inside like fishing line or something, but it was all clean. What could be the issue?

We have a 80lb fortrex and last few outings it’s had no power I used to be able to go 2 and a half mile an hour on our 20 foot bass boat and now it has like 30% of that power and can barely get it above 1 at 100% with fully charged batteries I’m wondering if it’s the motor windings and not control board considering all the speeds work also before it had its loss of power it kept kicking our breaker and we even upped the breaker my Geuss is the seals failed any suggestions to waht the problem is? Not able to upgrade to a new ultrex just yet and want to salvage this for a little bit

That's a tough one. It could be the windings or the brushes. Do some of these tests and see what you find. I believe you can replace the entire armature and brushes for les than a new one. Good luck!

Nice video, and I'd like to add an incredibly important and simple fix for a motor that runs in reverse when the cables are reconnected properly (red-pos, black-neg) after reassembly. I couldn't figure out why my motor was running backwards with the switch in the forward position after I took it apart and lubed the o'rings and cleaned it up a bit. Evidently, I had replaced the stator section (the large cylindrical part with the magnets in it) 180 degrees out from its original position. I took off the prop and removed the two long thru bolts that hold the motor together and just rotated the stator cylinder 180 degrees, and voila!! Its running as it should. If you have an electric DC motor and it runs in reverse when reassembled, try this instead of switching your cables around. The magnetic field has to be returned to how the factory set it up initially for the motor to run as indicated in the switches. Have fun!

Your comment re: motor not working when you turn the switch to 1 or 2 but then coming on when you turn it to 3. That is similar to my problem. Have a Powerdrive v2 with a foot pedal control. Nothing happens until I turn the dial on the pedal to 3 and then it's fine until I get up to 7 or 8 but then I don't get any more power when I dial up to 9 or 10. I suspected the issue was with my foot pedal. I replaced it with a new one but still had the same issue. Someone told me the issue is likely with my armature or brushes but you said if that were the case the motor wouldn't work at all. If that is accurate then I now wonder if my problem might be with the control panel. Thoughts?

Thanks for that advice on O rings. And yes when I looked at my particular parts diagram for mine, it was a no brainer to buy all new everything that was corroded or rubber. Very reasonable cost. Only $23 for even a new decal and some extra gaskets, and shear pins for the propellar. Initially, I thought my armature was bad.... but it was because I did test it right after removal, then buffed the copper corrosion that was blue-green and into the wiring on the core. I used a toothbrush and cleaned the wires with white vinegar. Blowing it out, it started showing it was grounded to the shaft. Next day after letting it alone, I checked again, and it was all good. So today I finished putting it together. I didn't get wires positioned right and it caused dragging. I looked at my disassembly photos and re-did wires properly and it was all good. I'm a happy camper. The silicone grease was used sparingly on the paper ring above the bearing and the flat cone gasket to hold them in place. The non-magnetic tube over the end of shaft is the best way to mount the magnet case. The new end cap O ring had some silicone grease around it just for lube to prevent chance of a pinch. Your video gave me all I needed to feel confident that after testing armature and it was good on the ohms testing, I could order the bad parts and get it going. Thanks... btw, I call what you describe doing things over as being oldsheimer... not Alsheimer....yet. But the older I get, I find I need photos to be able to remember how things were put together.... sucks getting old.

I noticed something like this due to heavy rust on the armature. Like it was affecting the effect of the armature and the magnets in the case. Once I knocked off all the rust on the armature and made sure the magnets were free of any rust contamination, the motor worked properly and I didn't have to help it start. May not be your issue, but that's what I experienced.

+Rick Hadlock I'm lost when it comes to those motors man. I haven't used one let alone try and diagnose one. I really don't like the fly-by-wire controls they have. I stick to the simple cable driven motors. My best advice would be to either take it to a technician who knows what they're doing or do so much research you become an expert on the thing. I'm sure it's some sort of wiring issue or some switch or fuse is bad. Try looking for technical bulletins that they or someone may have posted on the web to see if it's a common issue. If anything pull a wiring diagram or it and make sure you don't have any shorts. Good luck to you brother. Let me know if you figure out what the issue is. I'd love to learn about it.

I have a Minn Kota Endura C2 12 Volt 55 Thrust that ended up completely submerged for several hours. I let it dry out for several weeks and then tried it out and it stilled worked. I was unable to use it for about 2 years and when I tried it out yesterday it would not work. I can hear and feel an electrical buzzing in the head but the prop did maybe1 half hearted spin and then would not turn after that. I am figuring the control switch got water in it and eventually went bad just seeing if anyone may have any other thoughts on any other causes.

I have a motorguide thruster 30, that has a bad 7 position switch. I want to replace that switch with a PWM unit. Traditionally you would just connect the positive and negative wires from the trolling motor to the PWM, set the trolling motor to F5 speed and use teh PWM to control the speed. However, since my multi-position switch is bad I want to do away with it and connect the PWM directly to the motor instead. There are 4 wires from the motor to the multiposition switch. Could you tell me which ones to connect to the PWM. I suspect it will be black and red, but not sure.

After removing the two long bolts beneath the propeller, the end of the casing/housing for the armature doesn't seem to want to be removed. Is this usually threaded and screwed on? Might it be glued shut? Maybe a gentle squeeze of the vice to get it open?

Actually it doesn't heat up much while running in air. Because air has such low flow resistance,the motor takes up very little current.The propeller also gives some cooling especially when running in reverse.

I just installed my Traxxes 80 lb 24 volt Motor and I am not getting enough juice to it. It seems to be running at half power. I had a vantage on it before and just rebooted up the 3 prong plug. Do I have the plug hooked up wrong? The plug in the boat has three wires ( 2 blacks and one red) running to it but the traxxes only has two wires. So I hooked the red up to number one on both and put the black in number two on the plug from the traxxes. Should I have it in the 3 spot? My bow mount is running fine. So I know it is not my batteries.

Thanks for tips! Just ordered my parts for a MKAE All Terrain 55# bow mount pedal model. Mine had fishing line trapped behind the prop washer and mangled the seal to let water in. What can I use to coat the O-ring seals and case gasket. I was thinking that a silicone (waterproof) grease would help to prevent water intrusion. I found if I used a piece of aluminum tube over the prop shaft of armature, I was able to slide the magnet case over the armature so it couldn't slip out of the brushes.

I always look at the battery first. If that’s not the problem I’d look at terminal connections. After that I’d start looking at wiring for any signs of stress. Like melted wires or corroded connections.

Thank you so much for making these vids. Really cool to find it. I have a minn Kota edge 55 w foot pedal. Intermittently my prop won’t turn. Then if I try again or move the switch It might turn. It seems random. My lower unit came loose so perhaps there is water in the motor. I also fished through a very wet rain. When running it does fine. Battery is fine. I am guessing it is the switch. Any thoughts? Thx man

Could be. I’ve done this before though and it didn’t fry anything. I’d take it back to the dealer and see if they’ll do something before you try and open it up and void the warranty. You may have already by hooking it up backwards but it’s worth a shot. If they won’t do anything for you I’d just take a look at the wires and see if anything burnt up. That’s the most likely scenario.

Curious what level of torque you put on the two threaded rods that hold the magnet portion of the motor together. Done repairs in the past but still get leak issues.
@SMG_62
@SMG_62 4 жыл бұрын
These bolts really shouldn't be very tight at all. Just enough to keep them snug. You may consider using a bit of medium strength thread locker on these bolts as well. Make sure you replace all of the seals and make sure none of the cases are damaged when putting it back together. a small nick in these plastic or metal housings mating surfaces can cause a big leak.

My Minn Kota 55 was working for a few hours before stating to crap out. What would happen is the speed was so slow, barely moving the prop. If I pulled it out of the water, that would sometimes fix it (could be coincidental). Usually if I hit the top of it it would start working again for a couple minutes before going out. Does this sound like a switch issue?

I thought the seals were dried out and defective so I bought a seal set Yesterday I replaced the seals. Although when I took it apart it was completely dry and looked factory new in there. I was surprised. I really thought it would be full of "stuff"... So, I filled a trash can with water in the garage, dipped it in and took it through all the testing I could think of. If on a lower speed, it will work for about 25 to 30 minutes and stop. Unplug the power, wait for 10 minutes and it will work again. If on full power it will cut off much quicker. Unplug power, wait and plug back in only to find the same symptoms again.

Where and what type of inline fuse do you use... It seems I keep melting speed switches
@SMG_62
@SMG_62 6 жыл бұрын
There’s not really a specific type of inline fuse to use. Just make sure it’s rated for your trolling motor. You can usually look up the rating on your manufacturers site. If you’re using the recommended size fuse and it’s still blowing then you probably have another issue. Make sure to look at your switch and all connections to make sure nothing is melted or corroded. Also, just to cover the obvious, make sure you’re not using a 24V system on a 12V motor.

SMG Fishin' I have a minn Kota endura c2 55. I wanted to take it out on the water for the first time of the year yesterday and I remembered getting line caught in the propellers when I used it last summer. So I took it apart, and ripped all the line off. When I put it back together, I connected it to my fully charged battery and it won't move at all. I actually got it to move in reverse for about 2 seconds and it shut back off. What could be the issue?
@SMG_62
@SMG_62 7 жыл бұрын
Oh no that sucks! Did the motor work before you took it apart? Or did you not check before you took it apart? I'm talking about after it sat over the winter but before you removed the line and took it apart. If it did work prior you most likely hooked something up incorrectly. If you don't know and it didn't run before you removed the line there's a good chance you either burnt up the armature when you got caught up in the line. It could also possibly be the switch since you only have reverse. But I'd be willing to bet you have something hooked up wrong. I would take it apart and double check all the connections and make sure you find the wiring diagram for your motor using the minn kota website. Your serial number should be on a sticker on the transom mount bracket. Also while you have it apart it would be worth it to test the armature like I did in this video using an ohm meter. If you don't have one I have a fairly priced one linked above in the description of this video. If you test the armature and it's good and you have all your wires hooked up correctly and securely I would buy a new switch and see if that works. It's only like $15-20 on amazon (also linked above). Let me know if you have any more questions. Feel free to email me if you can't figure it out. smgfishin@gmail.com

If it were me I would still take apart and reassemble the motor before I spent any money. It sounds like you may be moving a loose connection. The switch doesn't typically intermittently work. Usually it either does or doesn't work. You can check out my other trolling motor video to see how to replace parts (kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6iwdaWFfZifoLM). Hope it all works out for you. Good luck.

Sir...Ive got a minnkota powerdrive v2 40thrust / 12 volt model made in 2009. The unit steers fine, but the propeller is intermittent. Sometimes the propeller will work, but most of the time I hear a "clicking sound" coming from the area where the control board is housed. I contact Minnkota and was instructed to take off the control box cover and connect the black/red wires to my 12 volt battery directly by using jumper cables. I was told that if my units propeller starting working then the problem was a faulty relay in the control board. I did as instructed and the propeller still worked intermittently. It worked initially but then stopped working. Do you have any ideas? Thank you.
