It's great to see trolls getting more attention. They're an underrated classic. I wrote a book about a world thick with fog and full of trolls. They're a lot of fun to write.

The fact the word troll was a catch all, is such a disservice to other supernatural beings. Even if it was the way of things back in the day. Someone: "TROLL!" Witch/Giant/Demon/Vampire/Werewolf: "Excuse you..." I hadn't thought of trolls being like Neanderthals' till you mentioned it in this video. Now I can't look at trolls the same. But it makes sense. Trolls dislike all things Christian? Huh. That's also something new to me. Thank you for another wonderfully done video! Always love learning new things.

Just started watching your videos as a fellow fan of folklore! I come from Sweden and over here Trolls are not always inherently evil nor stupid. Some times they represent the danger of the wilderness/the unknown, some times they are their own people living outside of human society with their own culture and family bonds. Many times they are dangerous, but some times they are just tricksters or just like people like you and I. In Swedish folk lore many things represent nature, and the danger and beauty it brings, and the respect it deserves, and I too see Trolls as part of that. They are nature spirits just like elves and fairies and the gnomes!

One of my favorite recent versions of the Troll are the ones from Hilda! And I know now why they don’t like bells, because Trolls were originally scared away by Church bells. (Though I guess they took the religious aspect out of it and just made them not like the ringing of bells in general…)

In my future novels, I would use them as extinct creatures as well as goblins and imps, though the orcs are entirely an endangered mythical creature species.

In the Skylanders video game franchise, trolls are used as a common enemy that can easily be defeated by the playable characters. And speaking of trolls as playable characters, the only known troll to serve on the side of good in the games is Boomer. Skilled in the field of demolition and explosives, Boomer decided to become a hero after overhearing the plans of his fellow trolls to destroy a dam and flood a nearby town. By using sheep to bear the force of incoming water, Boomer's heroics were recognized by Master Eon and the cyborg troll was made a Skylander.

In nordic folklore, trolls are actually beautiful beings that closely resembles humans, with the difference that they have a tail. Trolls being depicted as big and ugly is actually a modern concept, largely attributed the artwork of Swedish artist John Bauer.
