An author named Robert C. Sloane wrote a series of two paperback horror novels about trolls titled A Nice Place to Live (1981) and The Vengeance (1983). They were based on the Norse myths, and even stated that the myths were based on fact, but had an interesting twist on the trolls' origin. The first novel specifically said that men were a hybrid of the giants and the dwarfs (and had a mixture of characteristics of the two races) and trolls were a hybrid of the giants and men.

trolls are oddly my favorite fantasy beast. they have great potential for acts of savage brutality. they are huge and can wield cool curved swords or clubs. they are such a cool beast. i do remember trolls in battle for middle earth were cool troops because they could eat orcs or goblins to regain health and throw rocks or turn an uprooted tree into a club. i also remember snow trolls looking very different in war in the north. they were no less intimidating. their intimidating size and strength is one of the many things that make trolls cool.

In my current d&d campaign we have a troll NOC named Gibbles our DM has given us because I rolled a 20+4 for persuasion against it thinking I was just a small troll as Im playing a Githyanki which is a 6ft tall green humanoid 😂

I'm fairly certain that there were absolutely no trolls out in the sunshine at any point in LotR. Moria is obviously dark, but any at the battle of the Pellennor Fields, or at the Black Gate were protected by the Ash/Cloud/Shadow barrier woven by Sauron to protect them and the Orcs. I couldn't find anything definitive one was way or the other as the remains either stone or still flesh aren't ever discussed in any way.

Swedish folklore concerning trolls differs vastly from Norwegian trolls, which have more in common with the trolls in the works of Tolkien. Swedish trolls are instead thought of as cunning magic users, who regularly kidnap infants and children from their home and leave their own in exchange. More often than not, they are described as having a tail that they are very proud of which is a plot point in many a story.

In O.G. Tolkiens writings orcs are twisted humans not elves. The orcs=elves part was something his son or grandson (cant remember which) added when finishing the silmarillion. While his family has added a ton of great lore, i like the OG origin better since canonically humans are far easier to corrupt than elves.

@@thegametroll6264 It's suspected by Tree Beard that they are in mockery of Ents, but he is the only on one that has offered that explanation. It may or may not be true. We simply don't have much information to go on. We know that orcs appeared "coincidentally" shortly after Elves being disappeared "shortly" after their awakening but we don't even get that degree of circumstantial evidence with the origin of Trolls. With all that being said, I kind of like the mystery. It's just another display of how utterly powerful Melkor was and how big Tolkien's universe is.

@@joeycampbell940 No....Elves are suspected by "The Wise" of being Elves IN THE CANON WORKS. Tolkien's son Christopher compiled a bunch of notes his father had jotted down for several other "possible" origin of orcs...none of which make sense if you are using any of his canon works as guides and all of which are also contradictory.

@@joeycampbell940 Again...the "O.G." version has Orcs appearing shortly after Melkor and his servants discovered the newly awakened Elves location and started abducting those who strayed to far from Cuvienien...Men didn't arrive until many thousands of years afterwords during the very first Sun rise, which explains perfectly why Orcs seem to remember things that happened thousands of years in the past that they otherwise would not have witnessed, their absolute hatred of anything "Elvish" and their allergen to Sunlight....also the idea that Elves are somehow less prone to corruption than men is dubious. The entire Silmirililon is based on the corruption of The Noldor via greed, pride, and envy.

Goblins are refered to as orcs in the Tolkien legendarium. Though if you wanted to be technical they are much smaller and dwell in caves in the mountains. We saw them in the hobbit trilogy when thorin and company were captured and brought to the goblin king. We saw ogres in the extended version of battle of the five armies when azhog called for the Dwarven war machines to be destroyed. You may have mistaken them for a troll of a sort but they were a tad on the shorter side of trolls. They wore nothing but a cloth around the waste and they used clubs to batter the Dwarven war machines into submission. Just a brief knowledge of Goblins and ogres that showed up in the films.

@@josephtanner4594 I believe the word goblin was used as a term to describe more "feral" orcs in the books but they became their own thing in the movies. They were much more diminutive than orcs and they tended to attack in swarms whenever they were seen in the movies. I'd like to think goblins are their own thing like orcs, trolls or ogres.
