That's funny, same here, my instructor told me to check out Bill Watrous for good slide vibrato examples, and I found Paul's interview with him on the subject, great stuff. Then started exploring the rest of these videos :-)

Over 200 videos? You're an extremely talented trombonist (i played one decades ago, in high school but have always followed the instrument, from Big T to Lawrence Brown to J. J. Johnson (the Miles of the instrument, the most successful of all trombonists--both artistically and as a recording artist. My main regret is that he never recorded with Coltrane). You're equally talented as a videographer--shot angles, editing, sound, production values, sense of audience. Besides J. J., I'd love to hear more about the sheer "power players" (like Al Grey, who could blow over walls unaided) and "mic players." It strikes me that for some modernists (incl. Phil) the mic is integral with the horn, both comprising "the instrument."

I see both of you have this way of only moving the slide arm and really guiding the slide up and down while not moving the rest of your body much. Was this something that you consciously worked on or just naturally developed?
