As a black person, the blackface in this movie does age well because they are using it to say something that is still relevant today. This movie is well done satire and I love it.

Robert Downey jr. In blackface that was the whole point his character was such a method actor that if he played a black character he would change his skin color and it's all satire that's why it's absolutely hilarious

that wasn't the point ,the point was to passe a message about how Hollywood at that time prefer to give a white actor the lead role even if the lead role is a black character. so for Hollywood an actor with black face is more toléreable than a black actor in the lead role. That what satire is for, not just fun but denouce things

I didn't even recognize Cruise until the final act - it was obviously so out of character for him - he hasn't been in a comedic role since Risky Business, 25 years prior. Since then, he's had several comedy roles - this role showed he still had it...

He actually came up with the idea for the character after Stiller sent him an early copy of the script... it didn't have anything about the studio, originally

@@ImAlsoMerobiba I saw this movie when it was first released in theaters (I was probably a few years younger than Mary is now). And, no, I did not have a slow realization that it was satire...I realized it in between the Booty Sweat ad and the Satan's Alley trailer. It really wasn't that hard to figure out from the beginning!

This movie aged perfectly fine. The nuance to the movie that it is punching up. They are making Hollywood the butt of the jokes, not marginalized groups. RDJ's blackface is a commentary against hollywood, not black people. The same for Stiller's SimpleJack...

@@Jiff321 that has nothing to do with being marginalized. Being marginalized is contingent upon system power and oppression. You attempt to paint social pressure as being the equivalent of systemic and legislative pressures, and it is not. Blackface, while despicable, has never been illegal. Joking about a marginalized group, while socially frowned upon (and may come with social ramifications), does not come with any legal distinctions against it. Social pressure toward what is acceptable or unacceptable is how societies function. That is how societies determine what their collective morals and ethics are.

I personally think Robert Downey Jr.'s part aged just fine. If you look at it it's first of all satire and second it's commentary on method actors who go to crazy lengths for a part, third it is commentary on using actors with a name and not actors that fit the part. So it's very layered.

This is still one of my favorite comedy movies of all time, and Robert Downey Jr's role in this only a few months after Iron Man released, and got a Oscar nomination, so this was his year that dominoed to his massive success. Baruchel is pronounced "Bare-Ruh-Shell" by the way.

The reason this movie wouldn't fly nowadays is because some younger people don't understand jokes or satire and companies are too afraid to offend that general public. I'm happy you enjoyed it though.

That argument has been used so much lately. Just a few months ago someone asked Mel Brooks if Blazing Saddles could be made today. He said it couldn't be made in the 70's, but they did it anyways. Sure, you probably couldn't make a blockbuster with this style of humor, and sure the people who don't understand satire are able to voice their complaints more loudly because of social media. But this movie could still easily get made today.

Funny story: RDJ's character was originally supposed to be Irish, but RDJ was more comfortable doing an Australian accent and had it changed.

I had forgotten about the “trailer” with Downey’s character in a movie with Tobey Maguire, who played Spiderman in the original trilogy. 8 years later, he’s in “Captain America: Civil War” where his character is recruiting Spiderman into The Avengers.

His argument makes sense for the 'sjw's' that also don't get it but they really should add that bit in the argument for clarities sake. When you just say SJWs still don't have a sense of humour it's hard for me to believe that you yourself even understand the context.

This is such a meta movie. You’d think people would fall out of favour with it considering some of the controversial subject matters. But I think it’s a testament to the films commentary on those subjects that it still holds up.

Ben Stiller comes from a family in show business. His mother was Ann Meara and his dad was Jerry Stiller - both who have been in films and especially on television for years. Acting and comedy is on his blood.

What RDJr did with the character is the stuff of legends. Technically it shouldn't work, but not only it works, but his delivery also gave us so many quotes that became part of pop culture.

If I remember correctly, when Ben Stiller approached Tom Cruise for the movie (which he never thought he'd accept) all Tom said is that he wanted "fat fingers." Tom basically created the whole role of Les Grossman, including that dance.

this is one of my fav. movies. the references, the way RDJ is so in-character that even the black guy is telling him " what you mean you people" haha. the whole cast in this movie is legit on point. hope there is a part 2 or something such later on.

Oh and the satire of the movie Platoon totally was funny because that movie was intense. You mentioned the over acting at the beginning with Ben Stiller getting shot. That was a scene from Platoon. A poetic tragic moment in the movie and they went light with it. Loved this light parody. See ya next time.

Tropic Thunder is one of my one of my favourite movies of all time. The director’s death was unexpected and hilarious. Also Tom Cruise was my favourite part of this film, Les Grossman is one of his most iconic roles. His monologue and threat to Flaming Dragon is the funniest part of the film imo, both parts had me crying of laughter the first time I watched the film.
