Feather clipping is typically painless and is not permanent (when they molt the clipped feathers are completely replaced), but many flamingoes actually don't get clipped if their habitat is good enough because they simply feel like it's home. A lot of times when flamingoes are moved to new habitats with more of a barrier, it's to keep the humans out instead of the animals in (if you want to be horrified look up Busch Gardens flamingo), but there could be other reasons to do it as well.

As someone who works with a lot of birds, the technical term is called pinioning. It’s done to very young birds and involves clipping the tip of the actual wing, removing a piece of the bone, which keeps the bird from developing a full wing with all the feathers necessary for flight. It’s only done to one wing. Most collections of any migratory birds that are not in closed in aviaries are pinioned, both to keep them where they are supposed to be, but also to prevent the birds from injuring themselves by striking power lines or getting into other situations that could result in injury or death. While the birds are not able to fly, they do live normal, healthy lives and generally breed.

I wasn't aware that AZA was pushing for changes to bird enclosures to avoid the need for feather trimming. I was under the impression that as long as the feathers were not cut too close to the skin, the birds were unharmed. Guess I'd better look more into this. Interesting...

Hi! I thought I would share some info on this as an avian biologist. :) Clipping feathers does not harm the birds, thankfully. Once feathers grow in, they are dead keratinous structures. It's just like cutting your hair. Netting in zoos also has its dangers, since birds can get caught and tangled in netting. Luckily the zookeepers do everything they can to avoid this.

@@Natalie-it9ji that's what I was under the impression of! I haven't been able to find able anything on the AZA website about the feather trimming practice either. I wonder if it's a species specific thing for birds other than flamingos? Edit: I think what DeLady might have been thinking of was the practice of 'pinioning' or other surgical techniques that permanently prevent the bird from flying. But I'm not sure how common those practices are these days.

I had a cockatiel for 17 years. My sunny bunny was the best. He got wing clipped when he flew out the house and was almost eaten by our family dog 🐕. He almost got him! After that mom clipped his wings. He could still fly but not as high. We had 15 ft ceiling and sun bun still flew up that high to look out our dormers.

@@Natalie-it9ji spot on! I just refer to the sadness as them not fully being able to do what they were meant for however I fully agree on why it must be done. We clipped our cockatiels wings after he went joy flying out of the house and was nearly eaten by a dog. Im glad he got to experience free flying outside but his safety was first. He was still able to fly freely in the house but it did prevent him from bolting out the door if it were accidentally left open (we were unloading groceries when he flew out)
