I’m interested in knowing how to properly trim the plant and repotting it without damaging anything. Can you make a video on that? Thanks for sharing!
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub 2 ай бұрын
As long as your not trimming the growth point at the tip, you can trim it however you like. If you want the main plant to be healthy and strong you can also trim off the basal shoots. I trim pitchers and leaves as they die. My general rule is, if there is still green (or color on the pitcher) its still helping the plant. Once it's all brown, I cut.

Killer video. I just inherited a Nepenthes. It was living in an unheated, west facing, sun room, in Chicago. This winter it was in the teens & 20s below zero for almost 2 weeks. I was worried because the tendrils at the end of the leaves were tipped brown. Your close ups were like nothing I've seen in any other videos. I'm no longer worried. I can hardly wait to see its pitchers so I can tell what kind of Nepenthes it is. Thank you.

In my personal experience they like bright indirect sunlight, keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Also, my first pitcher plant i transplanted into straight peat moss (couldn't find long sphagnum moss) and it's doing quite well. That is until i put it where part of it was getting direct sun and it started browning, but it does have new shoots coming in now.

Hi, Here in my place, we used Monkey Cup(Periuk Kera, direct translate from Malay Periuk=Cup Kera=Monkey, ), or Pitcher plant cup to stuff a rice, cooked and used as culinary, it's everywhere, we have to many grow in the wild, low and highland species, but lowland much smaller. they like moist and no direct exposure to sunlight, some grow in infertile red soil together with grass and fern. Borneo Island Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and Kalimantan, and Sumatra have the best, biggest and beautiful Monkey Cup and carnivore plant like Rafflesia. @@CarnivorousPlantsHub

Hey Janet! Full sun in the windowsil should be fine. Keep an eye on the leaves if they start to turn a brownish red it might be burning and getting too much sun. It's hard to always give adice on the perfect amount of sun due to the plants previous conditions determine how much sun it should get. Just keep an eye on it, make sure the leaves don't start browning.

Very helpful video, I just have 1 question - how often and how much do you water them?
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Жыл бұрын
I let my nepenthes dry out in between waterings. Then I soak the moss until it's dripping out the bottom. Do not leave a tray of water, they don't like sitting in water. The frequency of watering 100% depends on the weather and temps. The hotter it is the more often it dries out and the more often I have to water. When it's cooler, the moss stays wet much longer. Once the moss is mostly dry on the top, I water again.

They really shouldn't be outside below 50 degrees F. As long as it stays above that, they should do great outside, If you notice a cold night or a freeze, just bring them in and put them in any window to get some light. A few days indoors won't hurt them. They are pretty tolerant.

Pretty much any insect that fits in the trap should be fine. Just make sure your pitchers have some liquid in them, if not you can add a little bit of water to help get the enzymes flowing! Just lift up a rock, usually most of the stuff you find under there should be okay.

If you keep it outside, probably not. They do a great job catching bugs. If you keep it inside, it still might find enough bugs. You can definitely feed it now and again! Put a little bit of distilled water in the bottom of the pitcher to help it get digestive enzymes flowing.

Hello Mike, I don't know much about the monsoon rain maker, however. If you are only using distilled or pure water with low TDS you should be okay. They are okay to mist and like higher humidity. Just be careful not to keep the top of the plant too wet. They like high humidity but don't like to be sitting in water all the time.

A Karen Truxion for carnivorous plant with no mention of the carnivorous part. No discussion on where they get their nutrients from or do you feed the pictures anything proactively or organically by setting it outside?
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub 11 ай бұрын
I don't feed my neps. When outside they eat naturally. Sometimes I add a little bit of water to the pitcher to help produce digestive enzymes. They get most of their nutrition from photosynthesis. They can 100% survive with no insects and just light. The bugs are more like fertilizer.

I love that your ventrata has been so productive for you, but unfortunately my ventrata,in the 12 months I've had it, has yet to produce a single new pitcher yet under my care. I bought it last June, and it came with 4 pitchers from it's greenhouse. I first kept it in my kitchen window to get humidity, but because of my covered porch, it wasn't getting enough light, so I moved it to my office window. It was getting about 6 hours of bright indirect light, but still no humidity, because of the winter, and our dry heating system. In March, I moved it to my bedroom window because I was told that NO pitchering indicates a lack of energy from sunlight. It could only get 2 to 3 hrs of direct sunlight in my West window before the sun reached over my roof, so then I moved it out to my deck, where it got 3 to 4 hours, but still no pitchers. A month ago, I was told they do the best and can tolerate full sun, if they're acclimated to it. And advised to add a trellis system, because it would aid the tendrils in attaching and encouraging pitcher tendril growth, along with some supplemental misting, so now it's leaves are turning dry and red. The tendrils do seem slightly a bit longer, but still no pitchers. As I mentioned, I'm truly excited to see your plant has produced pitchers, but I'm afraid mine seems to require such an intense level of sunlight and humidity which I have yet been able to provide.🤔🤔🙂🙏

Nepenthes are so tricky. I've had this happen to mine before too. Sometimes I'm able to get conditions just right and sometimes I just can't get a pitcher to grow. They seem to be really sensitive to change. I can tell you for sure though that full sun is not the way to go. I almost killed mine a while back by giving it the same sun as my flytraps. It's taken a long time for it to fully recover. They seem to do the best for me when they are exposed to real sun (not window sill) for a few hours a day then get indirect light for the rest. Everyone's environments are different and what works for me may not work perfectly for you. Keep trying different things, as long as it keeps putting shoots out you are at least doing enough to keep the plant alive. Good luck my friend, I hope you find what works and get some good pitchers!

Also I’m not sure how to handle how tall it’s getting, as it grows the bottom leaves die off so it had a good foot at the bottom that has no leaves now.

These can be really tricky to trigger pitchers. Make sure it's in a window getting indirect light and bonus for above a sink as there is some natural humidity in those areas.

I'll put my pitcher plants outside in sun for a couple hours every day, this will help them catch insects naturally. Not during the winter and cold, but when it gets warmer outside. The pitchers can have water, no problem. If it's 100% full, I might tip it and dump some out. I don't like to keep it more than 1/4th full, if possible. But water in there won't hurt anything!

@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Жыл бұрын
It does take a while for it to digest. I would say one insect per pitcher per every 3 to 4 weeks. The insects turn into bug stew inside the pitcher. They typically don't 100% dissolve the insect, the pitcher usually dies before they are 100% digested. But live long enough to pass on all the helpful nutrients the plant needs to live before dying!

Dear Reader, When you try to grow Nepenthes as a houseplant, do you have to feed the pitchers? If so, with what sort of 'food'? Living insects, flies, mosquito's or with dead or even dried insects (like mealworms)? With Kind Reagards, Michel F. van den Brun Dutchman diving into carnivorous plants
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub 2 жыл бұрын
I do not feed them, indoors and outdoors they seem to catch what they need. However, I don't see any issue with throwing a fly or mealworm in there to let the plant absorb. Just make sure you put a little water in the pitcher (if dry) to assist the plant in producing the digestive enzymes.

I have one is sphagnum moss and one in peat moss that I planted at the exact same time. I separated them and potted them in the different substrates as a sort of test. There hasn't been a noticeable difference in growth for each. They both do about the same. Which tells me the light, humidity and water has a bigger impact on them than sphagnum or peat.
@monke1919
@monke1919 2 жыл бұрын
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub it's because you are using super easy ti grow ones. And the main reasons that it's better to use sphagnum is because it's harder to get root rot than peat and sphagnum has aeration which nepenthes love.
