Lovely looking Begonias! And it is true … if you buy it space will appear. My husband keeps telling me that I am running out of space and yet I still find it for whatever I am adding to my collection 😂😍. Happy growing Geoff

You're spot on Trish! I can see a few duplicates that may get disposed of (or given away) to make a bit more room. And there's always those poor performers (Miltoniopsis anyone?) that naturally turn up their toes at a whim...

How do you propagate the Begonia Gryphon? I'd love more in depth video about this Begonia specifically. I've had mine for a while now and it's my most treasured plant. I tried to propagate with leaf cuttings and no luck.

I obtained a Pegasus Gryphon 2 summers ago to grow on my front porch. Wow! It did awesome and grew to be HUGE that summer. Fall came and I didn’t bring it inside until the leaves were looking ratty and I thought it was probably dead. But I decided to just see if I could maybe keep a few of the canes alive inside until this summer. So I cut off all the leaves and cut the canes down to about 6 inches tall and set it in front of an east window. It looked terrible and I pretty much ignored it other than occasionally watering it just a little bit. But within about 3 weeks, I was surprised to see new leaves sprouting on all of the canes! It was the middle of winter in the cold and snowy Midwest states. I began caring for it and by spring I had a lovely and bushy Gryphon to put back on my porch. It is mid summer now and it is huge! Love my Gryphon!!

Yeah it's classed as an 'upright rhizomatous' Begonia - so holds a lot of moisture in the stems, enabling it to rejuvenate after a defoliation. This video is a very old one - you'll find many of my more recent ones cover this plant in more detail - like this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/op6pfn9jltp9gsk

@@Grow_Up_Man55 It was a good size cutting with about 7 leaves and I tried to root it in water. It rooted a little bit but all but one leaf fell off. I went ahead and transferred it to soil and one small leaf unfurled. It’s been about 6 weeks and still hanging on. I don’t know I have about 20 begonias doing well in hot humid conditions so hopefully this one will put on more roots. Not sure what is the best way to root this particular one. Any tips are appreciated.
@Grow_Up_Man553 жыл бұрын
@@VelveteenRabbit77 I haven't tried propagating it yet to be honest so I can't really help there. I do keep it on the dry side and I've found it's not keen on lower temps (12°C about the minimum for short periods) but that doesn't sound like your issue. It might just be taking a while to establish some roots.

Love me some begonias. Unfortunately I don't have any now. My paternal grandmother had several rhizomatus varieties that were quite spectacular and I had starts from them many years ago. She and the begonias are long gone. Wish I still had them all !

Begonias are a genus I’ve increasingly enjoying as time goes by. Especially as I discover more and more interesting varieties. It helps of course that they seem to grow pretty well in my conditions! 🤣

I have Begonia maculata Wightii and a Begonia mazae f. nigricans, and I love the look of your other ones. We must have a similar taste in Begonias! Now I've got my eye on a Begonia rex 'China curl.' But at the moment I'm having trouble trying to locate one. I also like the look of a Begonia 'Dark Eyes,' or 'Little Brother Montgomery,' but it is quite big.

I’ve just repotted a sadly neglected, dried out, begonia (not sure what type) and a lot of the stems are very floppy. We had a lot of rain just recently and it became overwatered so I’ve brought it under cover and tipped out the excess water from the dish that’s attached to the bottom of the hanging pot. I’m a bit concerned that it hasn’t taken too well to the repot and wonder how long it might take to recover and the floppy stems become upright again. Any suggestions would be welcome although I know it would be preferable if I knew the variety. Thoroughly enjoyed this video as well as the previous one.
@Grow_Up_Man552 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question, Renate. In this case it might recover - but it might not! I'd give it at least a couple of weeks - if it hasn't firmed up by then it's too late. Make sure there is no way it can be sitting in water and don't water again until and if the pot dries out. I would also reduce it in size and of course cut out anything that's dead already. If there is any material that's good enough for propagating then I'd do that too - for insurance purposes. As it happens my latest video is about propagating Begonias - you can watch it here - good luck! kzbin.info/www/bejne/laWyaZuAi7Cef9k

@@Grow_Up_Man55 thanks for the reply, I’ve watched the other videos on begonias and realise now we made some mistakes in the way we repotted my plant. I’ll get to it today, being Sunday, and I have more time to spare so I can take a few floppy leaves off and put them in a jar of water to see if they’ll grow roots. Nothing to lose by trying it! Thanks again.

Glad you found it useful, Maho. I used general purpose compost (peat free) with added perlite. They're not that fussy with media. Also keep it over 15°C if possible. It will go lower, but would drop leaves till the temps increased again. Prune back to just above a leaf node if it get too big. I'm going to make a video about this one next - based on your question! It's currently in full bloom and looks great.

Yeah same here - garden centres and nurseries only ever sell Beg. semperflorens and the tuberous types. We're lucky in that we have a dedicated online seller who sells them as plug plants really cheaply.
