I wasn't very interested in Begonia, after getting the maculata; she crisps up constantly and loses all her bottom leaves, but this past spring, I happened to discover a silver limbo in a shop near my home. Holy Cow, she blew me away; completely, and I mean completely, metallic silver leaves, with a sheen beyond comprehension, and then, boom!, blood red under the leaf. Truly sublime. And so my love of rex begonia began, and now I have four and a wish list a mile long. I am a convert, that much is certain!

@@mckinneymindy, in Google, I just typed in Silver limbo begonia, and a bunch of websites and images populated, so I don't know why you aren't finding much. Steve's Leaves in currently selling the plant, and I believe there are others.

I am recently obsessed with Begonia's. It's one of my 2024 hyper fixations. My favorite in my collection is Black Mambo! It is black foliage with an iridescent sheen. The leaves feel like brushed leather, and are thick. I love how they have a swirl where it connects to the stem.

I have that angel wing begonia I got from Walmart last fall and I had to rehab it as it was all dried up. Then a plant from a nursery had thrips and it went after my begonia and I am struggling to rid it of thrips. They keep eating the leaves and the begonia is it’s fav. Love that begonia with the red dots. Hoya are my fav so that will be my only begonia as I don’t have a lot of space

I bought my first and only begonia maculata about two years ago, before winter, and standing on a south-facing window during that time it grew beautifully and even started to flower - I couldn't get enough of it :) But my love for the plants started since then and despite the most sincere intentions, my boyfriend breaking half of it (unintentionally!), it started to languish heavily after the winter. Despite moving it to another place, where it started to put up a lot of new leaves, it did not manage. I cut the shoots, rooted, repotted - it decided not to adapt. It is a pity, because they are beautiful plants, I would like to have them in my collection, maybe in the future I will succeed :)

I just got a begonia sinbad from a local greenhouse. When I laid my eyes on that plant OMG😮. I just about died. It’s soooo beautiful. Now just have to keep it alive.

It was only a whopping 4.95 and I think that was a great deal for what it is. Also btw, it’s so far been pretty easy going. I have it in a south west facing room about 13 feet from the windows and it’s just happy as a clam.

They all look amazing! That thurstonii is majestic lol. Two in my collection that I can highly recommend are begonia barsalouxiae (it looks like stained glass!) and begonia natunaensis (really cool texture and gets big)

I've only had success really with one begonia after trying about a half dozen. It was a noid that looks like "Sophia," and I find it very tolerant.

I got an unknown plant at Lowe’s the other day and when you showed the one Begonia with the cross in the middle i realized that was it!! That was such a fun surprise! Omg the thurstonii is an absolute BEAST now! Love it! Chopping and propping my maculata put me off begonia a bit...i had 8 props, all but 2 failed, 1 melted, and the lone survivor is still tiny after 18 months 😂 begonia are so unique and stunning though, i love your collection!

About the Sinbad: maybe it wants high humidity but it doesn't mean that it likes stagnant air. I am not sure if this will fix the 'melting' but this would be my idea to deal with it. If there is water staying/condensating on the plant, this might help get rid of it without decreasing the humidity.

Check out some of the begonia with a caudex, like dregei/maple leaf. Super weird that a plant that's traditionally a normal cane to have a bulbous caudex popping out of the base.

So I just got my first 2 begonias! One is a noid that was just called, "brown begonia. " it's so hairy and weird. I love it! Begonias often read as old lady plants in my brain, but this one is like the fizzy brown caterpillar from hell. My husband asked if it was going to hurt us. 😂 I'm going to need a begonia cabinet....

Your Begonia are beautiful Fern, I am in awe of your Thurstonii. I love Begonia so much, but I'd love to know how people grow them without eventually getting powdery mildew 🥲 I'm not sure if it's a problem with my climate or a me problem? I've given up on several really beautiful begonias now due to eventual powdery mildew and not being able to successfully treat it. I just threw out Begonia 'Elsa' after I potted the cuttings and found powdery mildew the next day or so, even with nice air flow and what I thought were dry leaves 😒 it spread to an anthurium like 1 meter away, presumably via the spores.

Avoid letting them dry out too much or too often and try using distilled or rain water. They can be sensitive to salts and minerals in the water. R/O is great, too

Amazing collection! 🌿 I have a question, I have 3 different begonia cuttings rooting in water. In the past I’ve tried to water propagate. The cutting had roots and moved it to soil but the plant rotted. How can I successfully transfer my cuttings so they will survive in soil?

I wish it were easier to send plants from the US to Canada because I would send you a begonia that I think you would love! It's the begonia tiger kitten. It's so beautiful and grows like a weed! It has fuzzy petioles and fuzzy edges of the leaves, dark red backs with chartreuse and dark green fronts. You should google it to have a look...and if there's a way that I could send you one and not have to pay a ton to ship it, let me know and would love to send you one! Also, I wanted the amphioxus for so long (thanks to yours, lol) and finally got one this spring! It has been so easy and is almost in constant flower...and the only begonia that I have that has flowered for me! I also have the maculata and sinbad (which really does sun stress to a gorgeous pink!). I also have a plain green one that my husband bought for me from the grocery because it has yellow flowers and made him think of the yellow roses that we had at our wedding...so correction, that's the second begonia that has flowered a lot for me.

Loved the last especially. I have a lot of cane style Begonias. Can I recommend Begonia White Ice,it’s medium green covered in silver dots and splotches all over,it’s a cane style,so easy to grow and propagate,grows fast indoors and outdoors under bright light,I have never had a pest on any of mine,I’m sure you are going to love it Fern! 🪴🌿💚 Natalie Ps If you were in Australia I would send you one. ❤

I love your collection! I have always avoided begonias and then this spring I saw a begonia maculata and I was like :O so it came home with me and then a few weeks later I saw one in the same shape but with darker green leaves and tiny polka dots that are textured and they are HOT PINK. It came home with me as well. I have no clue what it is as it wasn't labelled and I found it at the grocery store, but the grocery store has been getting in a lot of more rare or hard to get plants like philo white wizard and pink princess... I was hoping you would have had this one so I would know who it is but I didn't see it in your collection. Where did you get your beneficial insects? I seem to have spider mites and thrips on a few of my other plants and it's already cold out so I can't treat outside and I have pet birds so I can't treat inside with a pesticide. I also have ladybugs that come in from outside every fall and I don't want to harm them. I know the lady bugs will eat everything they find but I would love to know where you get your insects and if they do thrips (spider mites are easy but thrips are a pain). I've got about 100 plants so as you know it's hard to treat them all especially before there is damage done. I am in Canada as well so thought I would ask you since we both have similar access to things. Thanks Fern!!!
