good back up wind indicator: tie pieces of yarn, string, (back in the day we used tape from broken cassettes..) to a shroud on both sides. Easy reference without having to crane your neck to look up

A lot of people don’t know about your family. How your parents sailed around the world in 25 foot sailboat having you children in different countries along the way. So please tell us the story. The last article I read was the family bought a steel hulled boat and was heading to the arctic.

So . . . I've watched every episode since you departed Maine. Your video content and editing have improved tremendously over the last two years; great job! The drone was a game changer, so thank your parents again. This pearl factory episide was fascinating, thank you! My future cruising plans had only been FL to PR, through La Caribe, to Grenada. I've enjoyed Barry's channel for a long time; Ran is superb, but it is YOU, Holly Martin, who have inspired me with confidence that I too can cross the Pacific as a one day solo sailor, with my two Australian Shepherds as crew. I have the will, the money and the desire. Just need a few more things in life to be handled and I will put my plan into action. Thank you, Wind Hippie. Fair winds and safe seas. Bill

Another good material to have is thermoplastic. You can either buy fresh stuff (e.g. Instamorph) or recycle certain types of waste plastic. You just put it in hot water and it becomes endlessly moldable at a temperature that is almost but not quite hot enough to burn your fingers. It can be dyed whatever color you want and when it cools it is quite hard and strong. But if you need to change it later you can just heat it back up and reshape it.

Love your channel Holly, and I love that your parents had you and your sibs while sailing if that was the case. We are grandparents and parents, who live aboard our sailboat. She is a 30’, 1963 Ben Seaborn, Seafair 2. It was hard watching the oyster farm stuff. I felt sad for them. In general though, your videos, and YOU, rock, from what I can see! Judi

Can relate. Last spring, while at our mooring in Casco Bay, Maine, our windex was attacked by an osprey looking for nest making material. Bent one the two angled windex tabs all out of shape in the fly-by grabbing attempt. Another nice video. Thanks.

I used to look at my Windex all the time, but I haven't use it much recently. I prefer using some telltales on the shrouds. The Windex does tell you the true wind direction, but getting the apparent wind from the telltales is arguably more important, and you don't lose sight of your sails while you are looking up and burning your retinas out and getting a kink in your neck. Also the wind at the top of your mast is not necessarily the same as lower down on your sail.
@oaklandmax3 жыл бұрын
I thought that I didnt rely on my windex until it broke, and then I realized how much I like to have it available, in addition to telltails, and just feeling the wind direction on deck.

My favorite glue is E6000. It is made in U.S. and is available in hardware stores, Walmart, craft stores, maybe drug or grocery stores. It is waterproof. Sticks to plastic, glass, cloth, paper, wood, metal. Slightly rubbery when dry, which means it does not get brittle, crack or break.Thin layers might dry enough in 10 minutes. Big jobs with gobs of glue can take several hours to be really firm - then 2 days to be really tough. I use it on furniture, shoes, plastic anything.
@jodyssey99213 жыл бұрын
I haven't heard of that one, going to have to get some. I don't have a favorite glue, I have favorite glues. No one adhesive is suitable for everything but that one you mentioned sounds like it will fill a niche I haven't yet filled to my satisfaction.

The only reason the base is nylon is to be able to remove just the windex, you could have threaded the aluminum rod

Several decades with my own sailboat, and have gone through several Windex's . For me also it's the single most useful instrument. Your dad’s fix looked great but there’s a lot of force exerted up there with rolling and pitching - couldn’t hurt to order a spare -

Another great video. Google superglue and baking soda. Apparently to affect repairs you can sprinkle baking soda onto a surface then ad super glue. The baking soda absorbs the super glue and kicks it off to harden. This way you can build up very hard material that you can file drive machine and tap. I have just added JB weld to my material list as it looks like a must have. Is the boat you folks are on the Grace that there is a 5 year old KZbin for?
@WindHippieSailing3 жыл бұрын
Oh interesting idea! Ummm not sure but I don't think the Grace they're on has a KZbin. Buy maybe they were just trying to hide it from me,😜

Are you going to Huahine? There used to be a guy there who had a number of tame(?) eels that you could swim with and feed. These eels are huge, easily as big around as a persons thigh. A tip from Bernard Moitessier. To make cheap, durable and easy to install apparent wind indicators use black ribbon. Make them from about 1/2"~1" wide X 15"~18" long ribbon tied to the upper shrouds and backstay at a height that you can just reach from deck. A clove hitch and a couple of half hitches with a dab of Crazy Glue on the knot does the trick. I know it sounds weird but black ribbon can be seen quite easily at night. It is the method I have used on three boats and many thousands of miles sailing.
