Trouble for Kylie after rigging disaster in Grenada! This is the true story why we sailed to Martinique and not jumped to Bonaire.

I`m sailing sailing around the world in my Bavaria 55 Cruiser, making videos whenever I have time for it. Most of the time I sail singlehanded but occasionally I do have sailing friends onboard. Still in the Caribbean due to Covid and was supposed to be in Asia by now.
Even though this is season 3 on youtube I have already sailed 4 seasons full time but did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I have sailed several seasons in the Med prior to this, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and also been an active regatta sailor. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and been sailing ever since. Also more than 10 years experience from Search and Rescue at sea in Norway.

I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. The day I believe I know it all and don't think I can learn new things I should go ashore.

Thomas: The responsible thing to do for your viewers is to identify the company that did such a poor job on Kylie's rigging so that they don't put themselves and their family members at risk by using them.

Yeah in one aspect I agree with you but not yet sure how to approach this. I don’t wanna fall into the ditch of making sort of a revenge video even though they could deserve this. I have no financial interests however from a safety point of view it could be necessary as a safety warning to expose them. hopefully I will be able to make this episode with an educational approach as a tool avoiding this and similar companies in the future. That’s the main reason why I need a bit time to make this video focusing on facts instead of anger. Hope for understanding in this as it’s also humans in the other end. It’s a huge responsibility in sharing stories like this, even when the other side showed nothing close to that. All the best🍻

@@SailingwithThomas I think this is a situation that poses the question of moral vs. legal responsibility. You have no legal responsibility to identify this firm, but I believe you have a moral responsibility to do so. The reason is that a rigging failure can be catastrophic, even resulting in the loss of life. This is not a situation where Kylie got her hull painted and it was done poorly. Do you believe that the mast, as it was rigged, would have stayed up with a real sea running and guts to 60+ knots? Not likely. Now imagine a family with young children with such a rigging job mid-way to the Marquesas when in those weather conditions occur. You seem like a man who would act if he saw a car backing up in a way that it might run over a 4 year old child. This situation is not much different. Do the right thing, and you know what that is.

That is a scary situation, I would not want to replace the standing rigging on a sailboat like Delos did, but if I hire it done, it better be correct. Her mast is furling so if it snapped it would be expensive, either way it would be expensive. I hope I never run into those riggers, Nice save!

I believe lots of experienced sailors could done a much better job them self than this. But from my point of view rigging is not a DIY on bigger boats. You should be really skilled and experienced with not only a trained eye but experience from history in the industry to also know what needs replacing even if it looks good on the surface. I just had all my standing rigging replaced by Turbulence while being stored in Clarke’s Court. I will be checking it closely when I return to Grenada in a few weeks. I too will be going to Martinique in Feb to pick up my new mainsail from Incidences

We bought our boat in Martinique and had a rigging specialist do a survey in addition to the survey conducted at haulout. He is in La Marin and we will contact him when we get there

It’s a significant difference in prices from 49 up to 55. Eg. a Bavaria 45 is apx half the Price of a Bavaria 55 in re fitting costs. All the best and cheers 🍻
