You Can't Eat The Grass

Күн бұрын

This week the Air Conditioner in our walk in cooler broke down, so we have to harvest all our veggies the day before the farmers market. The Employee is back thankfully, but there is also another heat wave and the smoke is still stuck in our valley. The good news is that things look amazing this week, there are lots of flower, we make a gladiolus bouquet featuring Serina's salanova filler, and Ian arranges a bouquet finally under her watchful eye. There are lots of sunflowers harvested, and we also harvest lots of peppers and zucchini, to add to the rainbow of colours featured on our farmers market booth. Truly amazing.
We have just passed our 4 year anniversary of making KZbin videos, hooray! We have made well over 500 videos during the time, some good, others great, but every video feels like it's own individual mountain to climb, especially these longer vlogs. We only get to bask in the relaxing feeling of a job well done for a short period of time before we ask ourselves, "ok but what's the next video?" Keeping that in mind, if you enjoy our content, and understand the message we are trying to broadcast, then we want you to shop locally at your local farmers market. In a capitalist society you create the future with every purchase you make, so build a future that includes a robust local economy of farms, it benefits all of us. We try to show the work that farmers put in behind the scenes, the endless hours and non stop problems that arise for people like us, so that you can understand that the slightly pricier food grown locally has additional value, and those grocery store low prices can have other costs that we might not see immediately. Plus, local food is fresh and tastes great, and farmers make wearing work clothes look good!
__________
Ian and Serina of YOU CANT EAT THE GRASS feel that every small change can make a big difference to the world we live in. Every garden planted leads to a better future. We hope to inspire and motivate others to make positive changes in their lives by sharing our journey towards greater sustainability as we build our family farm. It's hard work to build a life worth living, and completely worth it!

you should harvest the glads corms, store them for the winter (easy to do) and plant them back in the spring. So that you can get back the original investment. Usually, the flowers become more and more beautiful as the years go by (as long as you fertilize after harvesting the flower).

Seeing your son put what I think are strawberries into the cubbie of his tractor, made me smile 🙂 my 4 yo grandson puts everything he treasures into what we call the "trunk" of his "bike", his tricycle, it's sometimes hilarious, and always adorable. I say, these simple opportunities to observe our children content, and joyful are the real spice of life. These children are the treasure of our lives, the treasure of our country's future. Your children are getting a valuable education about food and where it comes from.

The accepted hardiness zone for the classic Grandiflora gladioli (your typical garden glad) is zone 8, but it’s well known that by covering them with a good mulch, you can keep them alive in zones 6 and 7. But what’s more surprising is that sometimes (and there is no guarantee!), they survive the winter zones 4 and 5, even zone 3 with only the slightest bit of protection.

Loved the bouquet building segment with Ian, it shows how much skill goes into making the bouquets match the vision and the techniques you use to do so! Enjoying the longer videos. Would love to see you guys include a meal you cook or simple dish with your fresh farm food each week to give people ideas of local food they could make from the farmer's market or home grown produce. Also a bit about what you are preserving or canning each week in your busy schedules so you have some for winter. I think this would help give some insight into your week and help promote local food even more :) Also definitely team "veggies as filler," love that you get multiple uses out of your crops for the market!

Love how you are both managing tour farm! Happy to see that this market was successful despite the smoke and covid! A little tip to bind the bouquets together: get your rubber band around some stems, rather high, do a tour and a half and end putting it around some other stems, lower this time. You can easily get your bands around every bouquet you make! Good luck to the two of you, hope you'll have a bit of rain soon...

Zone 5, northern Michigan, my glads overwinter in the ground, some for more than 20 years. I’m sure our snow cover helps insulate them. I believe Nicole (Flower Hill Farm, zone 4, New York State) had some overwinter too. It would be interesting to experiment, mulch some, and see if you can get them to rebloom.

I loved learning about how to make a bouquet! I would love more on that in the future! It seems there is so much to learn. I've also really enjoyed seeing what sells at the market and how you display everything. It really looked beautiful! I wonder if your produce would sell better if you had the names of the varieties and some descriptions with them (example: Paul Robeson Heirloom Tomato: smoky and sweet; etc.). It might be worth a shot for team veggie? :)
