As a local I’m so happy to hear you covering this story! But I feel you missed something that points at Steven. A short time after the disappearance Jaliek’s adopted grandmother, I believe it was the wife’s mother, actually broke into the house that Steven and Jaliek stayed in the night he disappeared and found the clothes that Steven said he was wearing when he went missing. She didn’t have permission to be there so she actually got a burglary charge and it cannot be used as evidence but I believe it’s a big piece of circumstantial evidence pointing at Steven! This grandmother has become a huge advocate for Jaliek and his case, and is now estranged from her daughter because she so heavily believes Steven killed Jaliek. I also want to note that I think the system and NYS Foster Care is also at fault here. Jaliek should have NEVER been placed in that home. There was one bedroom and no plumbing. They used an outhouse. And that’s not the norm here so I’m not sure why they’d let these people not just let their 3 own biological children live in these conditions but to then give them 2 additional foster children?!? And let them adopt those children?!? It’s unacceptable and unfortunately I don’t think it will ever be solved.

7 children living in a one bedroom cottage without plumbing or heat, while the foster parents are receiving thousands a month in income? Something is terribly off here; maybe the foster parents were involved in drugs?

The jacket Steven said Jaliek was wearing when he disappeared was found in plain sight in the home. None of his belongings were missing. They made No effort to find the child. Jaliek deserves justice and those "parents' know where he is.

A red warning sign to me was the vanity of changing his name to the ludicrous “Rain Walker” unless Stephen and his wife changed theirs to “Shite Parent Techniquers” the other red flag is the constant moving around to inappropriate and insufficient housing. I find it strange that people with children can adopt another child and live in a one bedroom unit. How is that legal? Did Jaliek have to tolerate the entire family without having space to have his thoughts? This doesn't seem right. Jaliek may have learned the explicit language from someone within the family. It doesn't add up in my opinion. He may have been angry from all that he had to endure prior to and since living with this family. As for Steven not showing any compassion towards Jaliek's disappearance, makes me think he got rid of him. I would like to know more on this case. Thank you for your analysis Dr. Grande!

When we applied to become foster parents we were throughly vetted, had to have every cabinet locked, had to have a room to the child's self, and had to write reports on the child's behavior. So much paperwork that we only lasted a year. This contrasted with our foster care experience in the 1970's where we were able to treat a child as if he or she were our own without much paperwork. I hate it when I see reports of bad foster parents. I think the majority of foster parents are good but are weighed down with all the requirements (at least in Indiana). It certainly isnt for the remuneration, as we always spent more on the child than we received from the foster parent agency. I dont know how this family was able to move into a one room house.

Children in the system almost ALWAYS have problems, especially when adopted older. My oldest son was in a group home with Jaliek for awhile. I did not know Jaliek, but my son was very distraught when all of this was in the news. I believe the father is hiding something and it is too bad they have not been able to bring him to justice. That being said, Reactive Attachment Disorder is REAL and it is devastating to families. AND, it often escalates when adoptions are made permanent. I saw it over and over again. I can totally see how this had become an impossible situation. They were using respite, so that's a clue that they were desperate and reaching out for help. The behaviors of these kids is unimaginable and it is easy for us to judge them as bad parents. Having deep experience in the system, I have talked MANY friends down from complete frustration and anger over very disturbing behaviors and situations. There are certainly bad people abusing the system for money, but most go into it with good hearts wanting to help only to get burned over and over as these kids self-sabotage any success they have with worse and worse behavior. They need to be loved so desperately, but they can not emotionally tolerate it as it is so foreign to their early brain wiring, so behaviors start and escalate to push away. I am not defending the dad by any means, but I can see where the behaviors could get to such an extreme that someone would snap, especially because this is all compounded with a system that doesn't support people very well, especially after adoption is complete.

Adults often are overwhelmed with responsibility. Children want love all the time. Adults may blame children, for “immature or inappropriate” behavior, without solutions. Stephen should have been questioned more extensively. I think he was still responsible & accountable for a minor in his charge.

Another great analysis, Dr. Grande! What most people simply do not understand, and you referred to it in the course of todays. program, is that children who end up in the foster care system have been hardened by constant rejection and that it takes very special people with both a lot of stamina and patience to work with them and build something of a life with them. That sort of person is rare and most people who entertain adopting such a child are usually quickly disappointed and whatever goodwill they previously exhibited toward the child soon dissipates because this is not what their good Samaritan feelings bargained for. I honestly believe that Jaliek ran away, half expecting that his adoptive parents were rejecting him, and half delighted by the fact that he was right yet again. As for the adoptive father being unconcerned, he was probably relieved that Jaliek was gone, hence his lack of concern. I seriously doubt that he had anything to do with it.

The in utero exposure to drugs and alcohol as well as general lack of ordinary prenatal care (nutrition, etc.) also can't be ignored. These kids start life with huge problems thanks to the sperm donor and indifferent womb that created them. What a sad story! At Jaliek's age I feel he would have been found if he had run away. I don't find it suspicious that Jaliek would run away at 12, as a foster child, especially when he felt a lot of judgement and no doubt unloved. The note sounds believable and so does "goodbye" to me, that's something a child would likely say if he were running away. In saying that, the note could have been forced. There are so many conflicting thoughts. The.foster father could have forced Jaliek to write it before he was killed. The father's unconcerned actions are highly suspicious, Especially taking down missing child posters. If he knew that Jaliek was dead, why bother filing papers to legally remove Jaliek from his life? What would be the point? Besides, it's not a good optic when a child is missing to appear so cold, callous and unfeeling. It's hard to say what happened to Jaliek, but the unknown is sad. and disturbing.
@simonw13132 жыл бұрын
I don't think it would have been difficult to get a child to write a sorry message and then get them to add a note of finality to it by appending Goodbye at the end. I think it's more like the foster "father" is involved than the boy ran away though of course they don't - as he says - have proof.
@dissidentfairy42642 жыл бұрын
@@simonw1313 I agree on both counts. It wouldn't be the first time that someone was forced to write their own suicide note. So why not a runaway note? It would be easy to either force or manipulate a child into doing so. If he was murdered it may have even been to conceal another crime that had been committed against the child. Who knows? Usually children who run away at 12 are found. He's disappeared without a trace. I'm not saying he was murdered. I'm only speculating as to which scenario seems more likely. Murder seems more likely to me.
@lazydaisy22922 жыл бұрын
I hadn't thought about that but it makes sense. Why file papers to end his parental rights if he knew he was dead? All it manages to do is make you look like a horrible person and it would only benefit him if they found the boy alive so why do it if he knew he was dead? Of course it doesn't negate what makes him look guilty but it does raise questions.
@dissidentfairy42642 жыл бұрын
@@lazydaisy2292 There are two ways to look at it. 1. If he knows he's dead why bother to file the papers? 2. But, maybe he filed the papers precisely for that reason, to make it look as if he believed Jaliek to be alive when in fact he wasn't. It could go either way, but you are right, it made him look cold and callous and without any feel. Tearing down the missing child posters says a lot about his character too, Who does that? I think he did it.

This case makes you wonder how many kids will end this way when the mother or parents don't have access to abortion. I don't like it, it's wrong and people use it as birth control with a cavalier attitude about their bodies without mention of the new life. But, is it worse to leave it to chance and give birth to kids whose likelihood of a positive existence is up to chance and that it could be worse for them than death or to stop their chance of suffering when they are only a few weeks old and only under extreme circumstances? Would be some foul play on the adopted father's part he seems cold in his words towards that 12 year old boy missing. If a child missing in a person's custody with be a very alarming concerns for the child's safety

Who's to say Steven didn't have the boy write the "apology" note before getting rid of him?

I have worked in the child welfare system for twenty years and have seen children with attachment disorder and other behavioral issues disrupt so many placements that the case managers run out of viable options. They use what I call a placement "of last resort." It's unfortunate, but it happens. Kids sometimes push the envelope with a new foster parent to test whether that person truly will be the person who will be patient, understanding and give the child support, stability and unconditional love. People love to say our system is broken but they cannot offer an alternative plan when I say, "So we go back to orphanages?" The system is not perfect, but it is evolving and needs adequate funding to keep decent social workers and mental health professionals. It would be great if high schools offered classes in "adulting" and parental responsibility to help prevent children from getting placed into the system. There are so many issues that cause families to be in crisis and there frequently are not sufficient community family support services available.

Living in a shack so you don't have to pay for electricity or plumbing is one thing, but forcing a child to live in that environment, with a bunch of other people is another. What the hell is the matter with the agency that placed him there?

Sometimes watching videos like those from the dodo which always end Grandly, but start out horribly and stories like this latest from Dr. Grande about this poor child make me question my own innate goodness because I really want to Beat to a bloody pulp people who abuse animal and children. God forgive me.

That poor young boy had been through so much before he ‘went missing’. I’d imagine that if his biological mother was an addict - that his brain would have some level of damage while developing in utero.. which may have contributed to his behavioural problems. I want to cry at the injustice of this horrible situation.

There should probably be a longer trial period before foster children can be adopted so they can see if things are going to work out. I don't know how a couple with three children that live in a one bedroom apartment can adopt more children, I would think that is a situation that would be very difficult to manage. They really should teach foster children skills so that they can be someone that is desired for a family and also show them the consequences of what it is like if they cannot coexist with a family that wants to adopt them. It is asking a lot for a couple to adopt a child. If that child is stuck in that foster care system, they have almost no way of having a decent life.

No disrespect but this guy seems to be defending Stephen Kerr in this viedo saying in 10:33-10:38 there's no reason to believe Stephen was involved in Jaliek disappearance disappearance, he never mentioned that part in his disappearance where his cell phone pinged in Troy when he claimed he and Jaliek drove straight to his parents after respite. Phone data don't lie. Stephen was definitely involved.

After reading the topic of this analysis I became heartbroken and could not listen. I pray to God that Jalik did not suffer. It is very disturbing to me when foster kids are placed in harms way. Dear God please have mercy on the children in foster care. Amen 🛐✝️

Dr. G., do you think that this little boy had fetal alcohol syndrome from his mother's drinking. My heart breaks for these children,they are treated like throw aways with virtually no support for them. And of course, our foster system is a toxic waste dump. We need to do better.
@LeeDee52 жыл бұрын
He does seem to have some facial characteristics of Fatal alcohol syndrome. Smooth philthrum, thin upper lip etc. I would say he at least falls under the umbrella of FASD, this poor boy.

The goodbye in the note is not at all strange if it was previously written for the homeschool group. After the incident, he may have been banned or given an ultimatum that he could only return under conditions he felt he couldn’t meet. I don’t think you have the balance of probabilities right. Tearing down the posters was highly suspicious, and the father is more likely guilty than not.

This father/husband was 'booted out' of his residence by the wife. Doesn't say much in 'maturity' - where they as parents, can't communicate on same level on the upbringing of a child. He also shows a short fuse in and around a child. How did, (or did not) foster care evaluate/monitor this child's progress in a negative environment is sad.

Are persons who foster children screened for mental health issues or physical health issues? When there is money involved in caring for a child the risk of unsuitable care givers is probable, unfortunately. Sad but true.

Kinda confusing...the mom kicked the boy out of the house WITH the dad? But why - just for one bad statement? And what is the end goal of this? I mean it's her 12 year old son...adopted yes but still her son. I think Dr. Grande's spot on - the lesson here is you got to be committed beforehand to adopt a child especially if it's a troubled child. Real sad story and I hope he's somehow okay.

I assume they figured Jaliek was out of control and would not be a menace to their other kids if he stayed at Kerr's parents' house with Kerr. Also, there was almost certainly electricity and water there.
