This i about the only video i found having to change the inside unit. Saved me a lot of reading time. This will be simple my outside unit is on the otehr side of the wall. I wont even get into why I have to change this and the worst customer service from MrCool. Great video, showed all how to swap it out, if I was a movie director id say cut the video from 16 min down to 5, but you still get the Oscar award. Thanks for posting and taking the time to do this. kudos

I was so confused bro. But when he said I gotta change my shirt or my wife is gonna kill me it all made sense ☺️. Nice Content by the way. I live in the Caribbean where it is hot most of the time and my split unit 12000BTU started blowing cool but not cold. Idk if it need gasing 🤷🏽‍♂️ but I serviced it and cleaned all the drain vents. If I go close to it I can feel the cold air. But if I go anywhere else in the room I swear a little. The lower evaporator use to get a little frost on it and quickly melt while the upper coil was dry and cool. But recently my lower coil stopped frosting and just has water dripping into the drain pan. Any tips? Sorry for the long Message 🙌🏽

Nice vid, and you are right on cost. You would pay $8K for one split system with about 3 ton capacity. Those would also suck a lot of power. I love these mini splits and they are the future for sure. You can even augment any current system in your house trying to keep up.

Thank you for this. I just ordered a DIY mini split for my attic space. I couldn't really find videos that have unique installations. I will have to mount it to a wall then have then run the wires in an unfinished space then back out into the room to be then run down the wall of the house. That is one option. I called a HAVC to install company and they wanted 6k for the installation of just a 12,000 BTU one - With the help of an electrician and an MR Cool DIY kit everything will cost me about 2800 - because I optioned to purchase a 23,000 BTU - Because I know the 1200 will not work, because I run a 14000 BTU portable AC -- which is a nice unit but not in an Attic Space - I only have skylights, so it really doesn't vent well.

Had you done a full vacuum pull down to test the lines before charging (Mr. Cool tells you you don't need to a huge weakness in the install) you would have found the leak most likely. That and the nitrogen pressure test can prevent incidents like this as you know after you do them you have a problem.

Interesting video. Thanks for sharing. I found this because our 24K BTU MR Cool Ductless Heat pump (2nd Gen) quit heating a couple weeks ago. I had a technician out today and he found a leak that developed in the copper tubing at a soldered joint just above the accumulator. He commented that vibration was probably the likely cause and showed me a photo of another one from a previous job last week where that same line broke in half. Anyway I was curious if you had a feedback on how the warranty process with Mr Cool went. I have made contact with them and I am waiting for a technician to call back. Just curious how long the process took from start to finish on your warranty claim, and any other general comments you may have about the experience. Thanks!

The warranty process went smooth in my particular case. From the time I discovered the issue to the time the new parts arrived at my home, it took about 2 weeks. I’m just a DIY’er who doesn’t want to spend thousands of dollars on a mini split for my detached garage, which is why I like these units. MRCOOL will honor their warranty. @@Camanohal yes hvac full install is ridiculous. I’ve heard upwards of $7k for a 24k mini split 🙄. Would literally take 2 hours or less. And probably $5k is the labor cost in that $7k charge. What did it cost you to have your hvac guy diagnose the leak at one of the solder joints? Did they have to cut off the white covering that comes with the precharged lineset? I have a 2nd Gen 24k unit as well that’s leaking now too 😭.

My Mr Cool DiY still works, it's just not blowing as cold air as it did the first year (2020). Air temp went from 38°F to 54°F in just three seasons. Outside unit is clear of debris and is blowing warm air. It's gotten progressively worse. Used to keep the room 67°F on a 90+ degree day on Silent Mode. Now it struggles to maintain 70°F on Turbo mode and it's only 86°F outside.

I've installed a few, fortunately have never had a problem I couldn't deal with. I've heard that so many people buy a DIY mini-split and don't even pump the system down, they have no idea how significant a little bit of water vapor can hurt, plus, they have no idea if there is a leak until they loose their refrigerant. I hope that when you finished the job, you covered up the lineset outside. I've seen in foreign countries where they put a shelf out on the second or third floor to mount the outside unit. Mini-splits are used all over the world, I think the US is way behind on the technology overall. Jim

Hi - i wonder if you have any ideas fix a problem that is driving me nuts! When I run my Fujitsu mini split in Dry mode, in a couple of days i get water on the floor around the condensate pump. I replaced pump with new one but same problem.. I swapped the new pump with the pump from my furnace and still a water leak. Line from the unit is not kinked. Line from pump to drain pipe is not kinked or blocked. The unit itself is not leaking the wall is not wet. The float in the pump works when i pour water into the pump. I also disconnected the pump and ran the drain into a bucket This worked fine with no leaks. Any ideas?

Great video - thanks! I installed three Pioneer Mini-Splits two years ago (identical to MRCOOL), and they have been the best things I've done for our house. One was the 12000, and two were 24000 BTU's. They cool very well, it's easy to clean their filters, and the savings in electricity is phenomenal! I had a question, but I don't know if you've needed to delve into any maintenance yet. I want to clean the fan blades, which are the only things that have become "gunked" up over two years (the coil fins still look great). But - do you know the "secret" to removing the full front covers? (Not just the main flip-up access door - I need to take off the whole plastic cover - front, top, and sides.) I can't find the placement for the screws inside the vent area that most mini-splits have. Do you know where the screws to remove the cover are? Please enjoy your efficient cooling / heating system! Thanks again, Randall

@@PahjoDesigns all of these mini splits are rebranded mini splits made by the Chinese company Midea. Many many companies rebrand Midea mini splits. Pioneer , Mr.cool , blueridge and others. Even Carrier mini splits are now rebranded Midea since now Carrier owns apart of them. Some of these brands people have more trouble with than others. some of these companies that rebrand Midea design a custom control board for their outdoor / indoor units or some use custom control code / programming on standard Midea control board . This is partially why one brand can have more problems than another. Also if you want the cheapest Midea rebrand mini split, buy one that is Midea branded , or even one that is not branded at all. They have various other problems because of how cheap they are . allot of them will eventually have refrigerant leakage problem because of how cheap the coils are with these

Their customer service really sucks. I had the exact same issue except no HVAC technician wanted to come check my DIY for leaks during the busy the hot Texas money making months. It took MrCool over 2 months of going back and forth (also being ignored several times and having to call or email different people to find out why my support tech stopped responding) and hundreds of dollars in equipment and well over 20-30 hours of my husband and myself combined trying to find the culprit leak to finally get a warranty replacement for the indoor unit. When they finally did, they didn’t send the replacement unit with pre charged lines-which would save me so much grief! Now it’s going to have have to be done by HVAC tech if one will help-it’s August in Texas so it’s doubtful and expensive or I’ll have to get even more equipment to do it myself which costs even more money. It’s cost me more to warranty this unit than to buy a new one. And will cost me even more just to install the new head unit. It’s like they’re trying to punish me for using my warranty.

Hey guys. I’ve had nothing but problems using those insulated line sets with the white foam. I’ve replaced them on a few units. If you inspect them closely, you’ll notice how porous they are. I added the due capsules for POE oil and it permeated through the pipe and the insulation. Try not to use these line sets. You’ll save time and money. Run the American made copper tubing. Good luck.

My first experience with a mini split has been a nightmare. I bought the 12K 4th Gen DIY model from Costco and it has been a complete lemon despite replacing essentially everything over a three month period. Upon initial install, it immediately threw a communications error on the evaporator (indoor) unit. Support for the issue started out with the claim the evaporator could be wired wrong. Had us switch wire positions. After that, it wouldn't run. (Had to go back in and put the wires back the way we found them, only to encounter another error this time suggesting the evaporater itself was defective.) Next, they had us replace a circuit board in the outside condenser. Still, there was no signs of life from the condenser. Ultimately, everything was replaced bit by bit over THREE MONTHS before my Labor Day 2023 weekend install began heating in time for winter. Something to note: I live in a State where manufacturers can't charge shipping/handling for warranty parts so I was out nothing when they also replaced the condenser. I have since run across many complaints on this and other brands where owners complain the freight is prohibitive (considered oversized for shipping purposes). Another thing I have come to appreciate after the fact is that HVAC pros don't have access to parts for Mr. Cool. They depend on the manufacturer same as the customer does in a DIY situation. When the condenser was replaced. Mr. Cool also replaced the linesets. Come Spring, we needed to move from heating to AUTO mode. That's when we realized we had yet another problem. At night it was cold (not putting out heat). During the day it was hot (not cooling). It just sat there doing nothing when set to AUTO. We were simply told that AUTO mode doesn't work well. (Nothing they could do about it.) While our Springtime help ticket was still open, we had a late Spring heatwave so we set it in COOL-only mode (24/7 operation). The ability to cool from outside temperature was less than the same BTU wall units this mini split replaced. (Expected about 25 degrees cooler from outside temp on 100F day but saw only about 15F cooling in early June.) From June to July, the cooling capacity became progressively worse and now the inside temperature is only about 5F cooler than outside temperature. Last fall I have to say that once we did hear from MR. COOL, tech support was great but for the fact that it was slow working through all the steps to determine what part needed to be replaced (which unfortunately amounted to everything). This time around, help has been confined to a supervisor named "Patrick" who called once and put our service ticket on hold even though there was no resolution. I then tried to restart the warranty support process over email, but the same supervisor keeps responding and none of the replies reflect that any of the emails have been read or understood in the least. (I can't blame it on a language barrier because Mr. Cool has U.S.-based support.). I then emailed Mr. Cool a photo of a weather station hanging on the wall of the room that displays the daytime and nighttime high/low temperatures in a single glance. The nighttime temperature was only ONE DEGREE cooler than the outside temperatures, which confirms it is isn't putting out cold air at all. After sending the photo, there was no acknowledgement. Instead it was stated that it takes awhile to cool the room down if you turn the mini split off. (It had been on 24/7 since it was installed last year and that was made clear in all support emails.) For a DIYer, the thermometer gun is about as valid a test as one can get. (You can find websites online that tell you how cold the air should be blowing. So without being guided through any troubleshooting steps by Mr. Cool, I used an infrared thermometer "gun" to check the air temp coming out of the evaporator (72-75F) and then emailed what I found to "Patrick". His answer was that a thermometer gun - even though I have seen HVAC pros use them! - is not a valid test to determine what comes out of the evaporator because it depends on the temperature of the air going in through the top of the unit. The sum total of the "help" received in three months is to set the thermostat lower. (It's been set to 65 for weeks!) I am now at the point where I have no choice but to get Costco customer service involved. I asked on Friday if they could facilitate Mr. Cool reimbursing us for the cost of getting an HVAC tech out - if we can find one who will agree to take a look at it. I don't yet know if Costco will have any success with this request, but in order to obtain a refund they expect us to uninstall this lemon and wrangle it back inside the manufacturer packaging to return it using a return ship label. (It is next to impossible to repack this thing; but fortunately for us we hung onto the packaging!) At that point, we would be looking at essentially a third uninstall, go back and patch the mini split hole in the wall, open up the wall again where the old A/C wall unit was and replace our mini split nightmare with a modern inverter type A/C unit. (Costco is good about standing behind what they sell but it's the hassle of this that has me tearing out my hair more than anything.) Mr. Cool did not help in the least on this current situation but I learned, thanks to KZbin and elsewhere, that one of the potential causes of failing to blow cold air, besides the obvious culprit of low refrigerant, is a dirty condenser and a dirty evaporator. The energy savings are considerable for a mini split but unlike a conventional wall unit a mini split does NOT bring in fresh air and are therefore known to clog up and accumulate mold in the evaporator. They are not "low maintenance" compared to other forms of A/C. Had I known that Mr. Cool units require a deep cleaning every six months - potentially to include a partial tear down to gain access to the blower wheel in the evaporator which is where mold may accumulate - I would NOT have bought this or any other mini split. (Simpler installation, less maintenance and similar savings on an electric bill by buying a modern inverter wall-unit style A/C vs. a mini split.) In closing, Mr. Cool does not have any authorized service providers. If there are problems, the customer is 100 percent dependent on their phone/email support to troubleshoot. In fact, their phone lines are so busy you will be lucky to get a callback and if you do get a callback it won't be a technician. A customer service agent will confirm that they are just adding you to the list. Even if you *already have an open ticket* you will be asked to wait in line. Given that this unit has been a lemon, I find the fact that they are making me wait longer for technician follow up suggestive of the expectation that they intend to simply run out the clock on customers' patience if not the warranty. Upon visiting the Better Business Bureau profile for this company, there are dozens of pages of customer horror stories. I have, in the course of trying to get our unit working properly over the past year, posted questions to MR COOL install and troubleshooting videos only to have KZbin take my comments down. The company is protecting their reputation by making sure word doesn't get out.

I have the same set up I want to do for my new mrcool diy . The place I want to mounting unit The inside unit it’s going to be above a door opening then behind it I have to go through closet wall wall then the through my closet wall and then to the outside. 3 walls to get to the outside. My issue is how much space do I need to hang the inside unit over the door way ? Right now I measure 15 in is that enough to left and hook the unit to the mounting bracket? Also the drain line I don’t want to run it through all those walls I was thinking of running it over the doorway behind it and then straight down to my floor under the house and out what do you think ? I noticed that you left the drain line out and then you fished it through And then it’s almost like if I was gonna do the same thing but I’m thinking of just running it behind the doorway straight down to the ground in and out of my house

Ram M457 - I will measure my unit and see, but I think 15” is not enough space for the 24k unit I have. The smaller unit may be smaller in size. Regarding the drain line, I would run it the shortest route to drain. Make sure you slope the line set and drain line downwards as you go through walls. I am surprised the HVAC guy did not vacuum the lines and then check if it hold the vacuum or better nitrogen pressure the line and see if it holds. That should have told you if the leak was within the lines or the coil. Another thing, you normally should have added R410a to the compressor since it was nearly empty. Form this, it is best to vacuum to a recovery tank and weigh the refrigerant recovered, then pump it back and add to the exact weight of refrigerant. Or better, add new refrigerant. Folks, make sure you take pictures of your serial number in and out units as they are printed on paper and don't last. Useful if you need to get the warranty. I was able to find the leak in my inside unit within the coils where the electrical is. Not sure the warranty will work as I cannot get the serial numbers (my inside unit has some of it missing and the outside unit serial is gone).

You had a leak because of not pulling a vacuum on the line set and evaporator. In Louisiana, once you pull the plug on the line set before you make the connection at the condenser valves, humid air enters the system. The non condensables “humidity/moisture” when mixed with the refrigerant and oil in the system create acids that eat through components causing leaks. After connecting the line set, the system should be evacuated with a vacuum pump, checked for leaks, then the refrigerant valves opened to release the refrigerant into the vacuumed dry sealed system!

@@851995STARGATE You haven't a clue what you are talking about. You are saying that the lineset, outdoor unit and indoor unit is sealed to moisture and contaminants in the atmosphere through completion of installation. That is impossible because before you install the lineset that connects the outdoor unit to the indoor unit for the purpose of refrigerant flow it has to be open to the atmosphere before you make your connections.

As I await the arrival of my DIY MrCool that I ordered on June 15, 2020, I am looking at all the videos I can find on the MrCool units. What I have learned that the 3 rd generation that is shipping now has 4 line set connections instead of two like this one does and the line sets are soft copper tubing un like the flexible lines. Not be flexible to me is a negative. This could have been a weak point and thus gone to soft copper line sets. Why 4 connects is my guess that you would un coil only the amount of the line set needed and that the remaining could be hung on the wall and not have to be feed through the 3.5 in hole. I have have installed two other non diy mini split units with out issue. However this time I went with the DIY since I am not a HVAC guy the warranty would be the issue if I installed it chances are great that a manufacturer would say I made a mistake. So after careful consideration I decided to go the DIY route and pay about $600.00 more plus I would not have to buy a set of gauges and vacuum pump. Descent gauges and pump cost do not out weigh the small saving to me if I did have an issue mean zero support of a warranty. Seeing this video and his resolution confirmed to my self that I made the correct decision. I will say I have made many flared connections or years and darn few failures I feel confident making up a line set. In the case with this MrCool I will have a length of 17 feet to coil up and suspend. In my case mine will be protected from eyes and anything that could compromise the lines set, so I can live with this slight negative. Good video both of yours that viewed. 😁🛫

Feedback/ update my 24k DIY arrived on Monday June 29, however it arrived at my local shipping terminal on Friday at 1:41 AM it sat in the terminal all day Friday Sat and Sunday was delivered on Monday. I evacuated the system of the old 12 K mini split it going to a new location. I completed the electrical work for the 240 the other one was 120. Hung the air handler and formed the lines for the line set hook up. After attaching the the high side I could hear the gas escape the line set Into the evaporator on the low side of the evaporator the plastic plug popped off. At this point the other end of the line set had not been connected to the condenser. It turns out the proprietary fitting that should have been on the low side of the evaporator was not installed it was only a flare fitting. I contacted my sales person he had me send pictures. So today I got an email thanking me For my order this concerned me yes they agreed I needed a new line set and evaporator. The new order aspect gave me the impression that this would be handled as a new order not a we have to get it there ASAP as I have no conditioned air and the temps are in the 100’s. So I will have see how they handle this mess up and the priority of the shipping.😩🛫

They don't have anybody subcontracted to perform service. And from what I have heard, HVAC don't like to work on stuff they can't get parts for and didn't sell the customer in the first place. My 12K 4th gen mini split took three months from install to get up and running due to the P4 and other errors. Every part was tediously replaced under warranty. By then it was late fall. Heated during the winter. Then found out AUTO mode would not work in Spring. By summer, I found out that the cooling wasn't working either. I get 72-76F coming out of the evaporator (indoor unit). Mr. Cool literally told me that using an infrared thermometer to check the temp this way was not a valid test but did not suggest any other test. Now we're going into August and my help ticket - filed in May - is still being ignored. All you can do is leave a callback number but when they do call back they claim they are customer service, not technicians. Despite the fact that my unit was a lemon out of the starting gate, they would not expedite my access to a technician. They could not tell me when I might hear back from a technician. I am afraid that if this is not fixed before the end of summer, I won't have any idea whatsoever if the cooling is working before next summer. But even if I had lucked out and my experience had been better, I am no longer sold on mini splits. My main reason for buying a mini split was to cut my outrageous electricity bills for heating an attached (insulated) garage. What I didn't know is that mini splits recycle air, whereas traditional through-wall A/C units bring in fresh air. It's not well understood by first-time buyers that one may have to deep clean the outdoor and indoor mini split up to twice a year, and even when you do clean them you may or may not be able to clean the blower wheel - which is where mold can accumulate as a consequence of the moisture and the recycled air. So the air may not be healthy for anyone to breathe, if it is not frequently and properly serviced! I am kicking myself that I returned a working inverter through-wall unit to Costco - that they no longer carry, of course -that was cooling my space very well at a fraction of the size, cost and hassle compared to a conventional A/C wall in order to "upgrade" to this mini split. I thought mini split was the way to go because most cooling/heating combo wall units do not have the capacity to heat in the winter below 40F degrees. I did not want to bother with a supplemental heat source and thought that mini split would solve that problem. If I had known that they would be high maintenance and that failure to clean them inside and out every six months could mean a significant decline in performance if not also mold growth on the difficult-to-access blower wheel, I would not have bought ANY mini split! If hindsight is 20/20 a modern inverter wall unit will have similar performance with far less hassle and cost compared to a mini split.

bgregg55 - I had to pay for the service tech to diagnose the issue. He couldn't find the leak because it was in the line set somewhere which is concealed. The tech would have needed to rip the whole unit apart to find the leak. Instead, I called MRCOOL and they shipped a new inside unit and that did the trick. I wrote a blog about this which is a bit more detailed. Link in the description. Thanks for watching!!!

I actually believe this unit was not right out of the box OR I did something wrong during the installation. This unit was in a room that I don't use very often. I installed this unit in October and really didn't need to use it until the weather warmed up in April/May timeframe. I live in South Louisiana where we have very mild winters. I noticed the issue in May. I was happy with the customer service I received from MrCool. Lets face it, stuff breaks. As long as the company stands behind their product and treats their customers well, that's all we as consumers can ask for.

Yes mini splits work quite well for about 1 year. Then the leaks start happening, the main boards fail, or you will get a communication E5 or E6 code. These units are throw away pieces of garage. I've worked on And am a mechanical contractor and anything you save on your electric bill will quickly paid in servicing costs. We will no longer install mimi splts, because we have by law to honor a 1 year install warranty. This customer is only at beginning of his nightmares with these minisplits. Very rarely we will find one that is still running after 5 years. So with all that money you blow away on these garbage units, on repairs and leaks, you could have spent your money on a regular zoned A/C unit. Yes there good for doing a garage attic or older homes. But just remember they WILL leak, constantly break down, and will be unreliable. So that's your trade off. Very short term convenience, for a nothing but problems after 1 to 2 years. I know there will be people that will say there units lasted 6 or 8 years, those are rare cases. Or experience on these units is you will definitely have a problem, and a major problem, with these units in 3 years.
