Watch with shock and awe as The Samurai Appliance Repairman tracks down the problem in a warm GE refrigerator that uses an inverter-type compressor. These are different animals than the old skool compressor like yo momma used to have. Inverter compressors are variable speed, variable capacity and use a special control board, called an inverter board (or a Perverter Board) to control it-- no start relay and overload device in these newfangled compressors.
Here's the inverter board I replaced to fix the problem with this refrigerator: www.repairclini...

Hey brotha. I know you made this video over 4 years ago, but I had to comment. I was about to buy a new fridge when I, somehow, managed to stumble on this video. I don’t know a lot about, well, a lot of things, refrigerators included. I didn’t even know how to use a multimeter. I followed your video to the letter, bought a $12 meter and figured it out following your video. I came to the same diagnosis you did regarding the voltages...so I went for broke and bought the $100 dollar part. You single-handedly saved me from buying a new fridge/spending possibly thousands! I can’t believe it. Thanks so much for putting this out there for the world, especially for guys like me.

I have a GE PFSA5NJZDSS refregerator and I had exactly the same problem. It has exactly same set up as what you have shown and and after eliminating the other issues as a root cause of fridge not cooling, I doubted it could be the inverter board. And noticed my compressor was not running. First ever time used a multimeter to check the fault and followed exact steps as per your video to check the fault. And it was inverter board. GE don't sell refrigerators in Australia any more as a result no spares available. Got the inverter board repaired from a module repair shop in Ringwood (Melbourne Australia). Though it took 10 days for them to repair it. I finally received it a replaced it. Bingo!! My fridge is now working perfect. A Huge thanks to you for making this video. I did follow the steps and it worked. Great Video.

I have been a tech for over 37 years and ran into my first inverter compressor problem. I have a compressor analyzer and takes the guess work out of testing non-inverter compressors and can sometimes unlock a locked up unit. I really appreciate your expertise and step by step tutorials. I’m an old dog who is willing to learn new tricks. Thanks again.

This saved my family hundreds if not thousands of dollars!! Thank you so much for this easy to follow tutorial, our GE Profile lost all cooling in the freezer and refrigerator overnight...of course it’s out of warranty since it’s just 6 years old... I did the troubleshooting with my husband and we decided to buy a $114 inverter on Amazon and if that didn’t do it call it quits, we installed it last night and as of this morning all temps are back where they should be!! Thank you again for the helpful video!!!

This video is the most comprehensive and was key in assisting me in repairing my own refrigerator. I have a GE Monogram with custom panels that fits right into the space between the cabinets. The frig was ridiculously expensive and is not made anymore. Due to poor engineering and design, I don't think it is/was worth the $ but I bought the house with it already installed. With very limited knowledge in frig repair, and less knowledge on how to use my cheapo multimeter, I was able to deduce what the problem was and shop around and order the parts. In this case, it was a bad compressor inverter- thanx video! The inverter model had been replaced with a price that varied from 240.00 (used) up to over 600! While I was at it, I pulled that the drain pan had been cracked (cheap plastic) where I was using an aluminum drip pan to collect the water. Turns out that part had been DC'd as well and the new one was all stainless steel and incorporated into the whole tray (PITA for one person to replace). What you must remember is that the numbers in this video may not be the same for your model BUT should be somewhere on the part(s), schematic paperwork, or find it online. Finding some of that info took me the most time online.

Thanks Samurai - Another bad inverter here. One thing for folks to watch out for: the first time I tested the compressor, I used touched the leads to the plug connector - got fluctuating values around 11 - I could not hold them steady enough. But when I used alligator clips like you - 6.5 ohms steady. Our repairman was grateful that all he had to do was stop by with the part (once I finally tracked down the exact part number). He was 9 jobs behind and it was after noon already.

This video not only depicts my exact model refrigerator but the exact same symptoms. After following your steps I concluded that it was my inverter also. Purchased a new one VIA Amazon and installed it. Fridge is back up and running again....Thank You!!! Discovered that we had a power surge which I can only assume fried my inverter it also set codes on both my washer and dryer which fortunately were easily reset. I now have outlet surge protectors on all of my electronically controlled appliances. Highly recommend you do the same. THANKS AGAIN!

Thank you so much for posting this detailed video. It enabled me to understand areas of possible root causes why my compressor was not running hence ref and freezer was not cooling at all. Your section pointing to the yellow/red wires in the control board was the eye opener. I removed the board cover and noticed the connector with the yellow red wires was not properly engaged to the connector. Once I pressed down on it to engage, the compressor started working, and the ref and freezer immediately started the cooling process. Saved us an expensive service call! Thanks again!

All these years later and your gift of this video is still giving! Curious to know if you (or anyone) has successfully repaired the control board by finding and replacing the failed component(s) on it. I ordered the replacement inverter control unit for my Lady’s Frigidaire Galleria side by side (freezer stopped freezing but the fridge was cool. I removed the inverter unit and the fridge warmed up. I reinstalled the unit yesterday and the fridge AND freezer are back to life with the compressor running again) I ordered a refurbished inverter control unit from eBay and want to try and fix the original unit. Cheers to you and your shared knowledge & expertise! Oh, also your humorous nomenclature! 😂

On my GE Profile I was getting 10 to 12 VDC at the J15 connector. So I replaced the control board ($120.00USD), only to still see the same 10 to 12 VDC. The refrigerator was still not cooling down. I then removed the compressor power inverter to find the case discolored from when the inverter went bad. One note, to remove the connector from the power inverter to the compressor you must use a screw driver to pry the connector off of the compressor. After replacing the compressor power inverter ($150.00 USD) the refrigerator started cooling down and fuctioning properly.

+Kelly Brown You have to test it with the plug on. I got the same when I pulled the plug off, but when it was left on and I put the probes into the back of the connector, it was the correct 5V

Wow, I found this video and had all the same symptoms that the video described. Followed the instructions which were well documented and now my 5 year old GE product is up and running. The repair guy around here did not even know how to fix this problem. You guys rock! Repair cost me 90 bucks and some change and a few minutes to take out the old part and replace the new part. I have two more problems with the fridge that I want to address and I will be looking at your site and any videos you have to see if I can do that as well. The ice maker is just running water into the ice compartment, so we shut it off. Thanks you guys ! Good video. This video helped confirm my control board and compressor tested good. 5 years prior to this my control board had failed. So I was worried this might be the issue. Update: Followed the instructions to the letter, came to the same conclusion, good mommyboard and compressor. Ordered an inverter off of Ebay for 75 bucks. It came today. Bonus! It came with jumper adapters to change the plug, didn't have to open the old one. Installed it, only took minutes, cleaned the condenser coil, and plugged it in. Runs like a champ and is pulling down to temp as we speak. Saved hundreds, probably at the very least a grand by not chucking it to the curb and buying a new fridge. Once again, thank you very much for this.

Thanks for the details on the winding resistance. Another blog I read said '10' - mine was a consistent 6.5 - so I've ordered the new inverter board. As for the trick about the wiring harness - I ordered my replacement from Amazon - it came with adapters meaning you didn't have to open the unit out to swap out the DC wire harness. It came with two options.

Hi SamuraiRepairman...a HUGE thank you to you for taking the time to post your video. Followed your steps to diagnose and narrowed it down to the inverter - purchased an inverter from the Repair Clinic and received it in Ontario, Canada within a couple of days (by the way, the same part ordered here from the Canadian GE supplier is $440 Cdn....criminal!!). Saved over $250 ordering from the the RepairClinic even after exchange, courier cost etc!!!! Made sense it was the inverter as the fridge would shut off intermittently. I figured the pc board was heating up, causing a connection to break (probably a bad soldering joint) then would work again once it cooled down and the joint reconnected. Why the heck would GE put a circuit board right up against a unit that heats up (i.e. the compressor)? I noticed plastic components were dried out, discoloured and brittle from years of heating. Message to GE: was placing the circuit board right up against the compressor intentional so boards eventually go bad or are you guys just poor designers? ...you gotta wonder. Oh and by the way GE, thanks so much for using a ton of adhesive to glue the board to the case so there's no way one could attempt to extract, examine and re-solder joints without damaging the board even more - nice. Just venting but it's good to let others know! Thanks again SamuraiReparman!! Andy

Thanks for the video. Fixed my 13 year old profile side by side. Had a crappy multimeter so couldn’t get a true reading on the compressor. Decided was going to try the board anyway. Bought the cheaper $100 version since I know OEM never gives returns on opened tried parts. No issues up and running. Those copper lines were a big pain, I could only move the smaller ones and lift the compressor, that alone would negate the return the scratches put on the part. Thanks Again!

I appreciate the thorough troubleshooting information. One thing not shown is how difficult it can be to remove that inverter controller unit. Because of the fairly rigid copper tubing "stubs" (about 2" - 3" long) that were in the way, I had to very gently bend them out of the way to allow the controller box to slide out. Others viewing this video might run into a similar situation.

@@stevelark9840 If I remember correctly, the contacts inside the nylon shell of the connector at the inverter end of the cable coming from J15 of the control board weren't properly mated. Firmly pushing the wires into the nylon shell fixed the problem. You can check that you are getting 12V at the inverter end of the cable. Everything else is working, including the coil fan, but the compressor it's just showing no signs of life. I've run through the checks on this video. The compressor is showing 6.8 all around. The J15 pins on the motherboard though, are showing 11.6V DC. Should I assume that it's the motherboard at this point?

Thanks Samurai, great video to eliminate the main PCB and compressor windings

Hey Samurai, great video, but I recommend one more test. A seized compressor will cause the inverter to lock out. In this scenario, the compressor windings would ohm out ok and make it look like the inverter is bad. I like to power cycle the inverter board while monitoring the amp draw on the 120 volt inverter feed. If the compressor is locked, you will see a large amp draw then the inverter will cycle off. I think those boards will try to start the compressor three times before locking out.

Exactly! Ive got two compressors, reading good resistance, but never started, Inverter tried to start maybe 4-5 times? then Ive got 4 blinks? means rotor locked!

Thanks for that excellent comment, Dennis! So, just to make sure I understand your procedure, you'll cycle power to the refrigerator (unplug/plug back in) while you have your clamp on amp meter on one of the 120vac wires to the inverter board (orange and black). If the inverter is bad, you'll always read 0 amps. If the compressor is bad (seized), you'll see the current draw locked rotor amperage (8 amps or something) for a few seconds and then drop to zero. Is that about right?

FIRST THING TO CHECK is the condenser coils.. I saw ur at the beginning and it was very dirty that's what was making fridge warm not allowing the hot freon to cool off before getting to evaporator!

I am in the field for over 30 years and I get overwhelmed a lot also. I keep running into new units I never seen before also but you have to just learn how to fix it so you know for the next job. I just take it easy now otherwise I am running around and overwhelmed. So just take it slow and you will get it.

Same boat here. Fridge decided it no longer wanted to cool; either side. Decided to hell with it, let's learn some stuff. Ripped off the covers in the back. Motherboard appears OK visually; no busted caps. Fan next to compressor comes on. Compressor doesn't come on at all. Not hot, no hum, nothing. Now on mine, I can't get the damn gray box off of the compressor to check the ohms! I don't want to pry it too much and bust it altogether. Also, I have a 'Compressor Electronic Control Unit' behind the compressor that I don't see in your video, so not sure if that may be the issue. When you put the probes on the J15 pins, you put both hot and ground on each pin? I ordered a motherboard off eBay for 55 bucks, we shall see if that does anything. Good video at any rate, can't find any like it!

Welp, logic board didn't do anything. Still no compressor turning on. So I browsed for a couple weeks on eBay to find a fairly priced inverter...finally found a used one for $120, offered guy 100 and he accepted. Had to take my plugs off of the old one and put it on this one since they had different connectors. Installed, plugged in...nothing. Was pissed for 20 seconds but then I unplugged power, waited 10 seconds and plugged back in. Compressor fired up! I heard it humming. Waited 10 minutes and it started getting warm like it should. Thanks for this vid man! I am a computer guy by nature so fixing appliances isn't my bag, but now I will throw it in my repertoires

This video is excellent and nails my refrigerator's condition. My J15 connecter is measuring 7amps. You said it should be between 4-6 amps. Is this alerting me that my mother board is the problem?

I would like to add to this on my side by side my freezer was working great but fridge was not cooling. I discovered embedded in to Styrofoam at the back top is a fan that sucks cold air from the freezer. You have to remove the plastics to get to it. I was inspecting to see if the fan was running and noticed a small square door that must regulate airflow from the freezer. Mine was stuck shut so no freezer air was getting to the fresh side. I just shoved it open . Now cool air is flowing again.

Performed test as suggested. AC and DC values as described. Guess(hope) I have a bad inverter. Thank you for this video. One question, why not test DC value at end of harness to confirm wire harness is good as well? Anyway, I tried that first with the intention to go to the control board if needed. Wasn't needed.

Still no luck. I replaced the inverter and the compressor did not start. I replaced the logic board with the same result. I now have replaced all thermistors to no avail. I'm stumped. I still get 10VDC from the j15 and not 5VDC. Any help what I can do next?

indirepair I had same issue. Compressor windings showed approx 7ohms..so it checked out. 10VDC -- not the problem. I also replaced the thermistors -- not the problem. Motherboard checked fine. I ordered a new inverter board and installed but it still did work. BUT the replacement inverter board that I installed actually WAS DEFECTIVE. I returned and got one directly from GE. The fridge works great.

use a leaf blower at high speed to blow out the dust of the condenser coil---be sure to wear dust mask or use a can of coil cleaner that spray liquid starting at the top and work your way down.
