I just bought a used 2006 F150 to which the dealer quoted over $500 to even attempt to trouble shoot the backup sensors that were not working. Offered up an aftermarket back up camera for $150 in place of repairing the factory system. With your video and recommendation to avoid the factory parts counter, ended up with the new backup camera plus repaired the backup sensor system for just under $40. Thank you greatly. I will be checking your posts for other mechanical questions.

Thanks for posting. Fixed my 2003 F250 using this technique. My inner 2 sensors failed after roughly 2 years (circa 2005) and I never bothered to fix the system. Decided to. Ordered a 4 pack of sensors from e-bay for ~ $21 and that included free shipping. So far so good. A couple install notes: On this make model, the inner 2 sensors are slightly more difficult to get access to due to the position of the spare tire support, but still easy. My original part numbers were 3F23-15K859-BA. The replacements were 4F23-15K859-AA but the e-bay website had a make/model checker and reported this was a suitable substitute; i.e. it should fit. Externally all the replacements fit perfectly in the bumper holder and the holding clips worked fine too. The only slight difference was the near the inner sleeve around the 3 power prongs. There was enough of a difference that the power cable didn't slide in and latch like you would expect from OEM, but with a little coaxing, I was able to get it in and latched. I also used a slight amount of dielectric grease for the reassemble. Still working after a couple days. Unless you have significant hearing problems, you don't need any tools or "listening devices" to hear the clicking sounds when troubleshooting. He only used what he did to help shoot the video... Nice job and thanks for taking the time to share it.

Thank you for the informative video. I just bought a "new" 2006 F350. The backup alarm did not work. After watching your video I ordered 4 sensors on ebay for $41.00. After receiving, I tested and discovered only one was bad. I changed it first, problem solved. It took me longer to get my small screwdriver, creeper and flashlight out, than it took to repair the sensor. Thanks again!!!

myklein75 Great! That's the reason I make these videos. So many repairs seem intimidating and all we need is someone to show us how easy they actually are.

Thanks bro ! I used your trick to find out the dead sensor on my 05 Nissan Titan. The ticking sound is really faint, I used a paper tube between my ear and a sensor to hear the sound. Thanks again, now I only need to buy ONE, instead of four, replacement sensor.

Thanks for sharing. This is my exact problem - 2006 F250 with 3 malfunctioning sensors. Same deal with my dealer - they wanted about $160 each and I bought all 4 from China on eBay for $48 total. They'll take a couple of weeks to get here, but well worth it.

Excellent, worked perfectly fine, 3 of the 4 on my 06 Freestar clicked, one did not, removed the rear fascia, swapped it out and the back up assist works perfectly fine. It was just that simple and easy and I'm sure about $300-$400 at a certified shop

As I said in the video, the inductance wand I used was to amplify the sound so it could be heard on the video. If you put your ear down to the sensors and cover them (to simulate backing too close to something) you should be able to hear the ticking with the "naked" ear.

+DeathScouter how have they heald up over time? I'm looking to replace mine with the ebay ones
@DeathScouter8 жыл бұрын
+Bill Kelso I did have a sensor fail after about a year. I ordered a 2nd set of 4 (still only $35) but this time I didn't bother with my wand since I discovered how easy it is to simply swap the sensors. I decided to replace 2 and re-tested the system. If it was fixed (and it was) I would keep 2 new ones as spares. If it wasn't fixed, I would roll the 2 I took out with the remaining 2 (and still be able to keep 2 new ones as spares). SO, to your question, 1 of the 4 ebay specials didn't last more than a year.... but I don't know how that compares to "Genuine Ford".
@DeathScouter7 жыл бұрын
No issues so far. Since the original video, I replaced 2 (suspect only 1 was bad, but replaced them in pairs to speed up troubleshooting). So far, so good.

My backup sensors went out about 3 years ago and I took it to the dealer. It cost me $260. What a fool I was. This time, I ordered the parts (set of 4) for $39. I checked out the video and did it myself. As far as I know they replaced one sensor. The first sensor I replaced fixed the problem and now I have three spares for the next time one goes out. It should be against the law for them to charged $260 for a 2 minute job and a $10 part.

DeathScouter.... Thanks for the troubleshooting video on the backup sensors. After watching it, I followed your instructions to check out the sensors. I don't have the amplifier, but was a relatively quiet place when testing. What I found was that I didn't hear anything from ANY of the sensors. I could presume that perhaps all four sensors are bad, but before ordering new ones, I was wondering if and what else I might check just to make sure it not something other than the sensors. Any help would be greatly appreciated.Thanks....

Plug in your Earphones and hold te Microphone of the Cell in Front of the Sensor. Move around a little bit. If the Sensor is Good = you hear a rapid ticking Noise. If not = the Sensor is dead. I'm trying to install this system on my 2000 explorer. I have the bumper with sensors and I plugged it in to the stock connector. I also plugged in the parking button and rear module. All the wiring was already in the truck so it was plug and play. But the switch light is always on "off". The only thing I couldn't find was the speaker for the backup noise. I'm guessing that's what's causing the system to stay off, since the speaker isn't plugged in. I can't find anything on the RSS speaker for a second generation explorer though :/

My parking aid bleeps continually (intermittent). Rover 75 2004. At other times it works perfectly, and once saved a small child's life. Is it possible to change a sensor without removing the bumper?
@DeathScouter7 жыл бұрын
Geoff, I have to confess I'm not experienced on the Rover, so I don't know what it takes to access your backup sensors. All the systems are fundamentally the same, being that if you have any defects, troubleshooting starts with suspecting the sensors. Sorry that I'm not answering the question you asked.

I have a Mercury Sable (2008). When I checked on eBay for the part number (4G1Z-15K859-AAA) the cheapest I could find was $175 for 1 sensor. Is there a better deal available? For that kind of money I'd rather install a backup camera.
@DeathScouter7 жыл бұрын
You can find brand new ones (set of 4) for $124 (www.paintedoemparts.com/store/p1688/Painted_Parking_Sensor_System.html?gclid=CM6VpNrV99ICFZaPswodrcYFog). Individual ones are same price (wow!) on ebay and Rock Auto. There is an ebay auction right now for used ones @ $85/each. Otherwise, you can try calling around to junk yards and seeing if they have them. Not sure why, but your make/model is pretty expensive.

Thanks for the video, this describes the problem with my 2004 Ford Freestar exactly. I don't have one of those audio testers and I cant hear anythings from any of the sensors. Is there another easy way to test them? In the end I might just buy 4 and swap them all ; )
@DeathScouter9 жыл бұрын
MrSmakboy Sorry for the delay in responding but I hope you got your sensors fixed. Did you swap them all? I don't have an alternative method if you can't hear the ticking. Mine happen to be loud enough that you can hear them with the naked ear. If you know someone who does telephone work (that where I had my wand from) they will have an inductance wand you can use. I don't know what else to offer you. Sorry.
@montu4927 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. Whenever I put the reverse gear the left side sensors continuously make ticking sound as if something is placed very close to them. I have checked it a billion times and nothing is there for miles behind the sensors but still they make that sound continuously. Please help.
@DeathScouter7 жыл бұрын
If there is something happening on "one side", then you could try moving the right side sensors to the left, and left to right, and see if the problem follows the sensors or stays. Virtually all backup sensor issues are due to 1/more sensors going bad, so we may do this work without actually fixing something. Would be nice if you had anyone with a similar truck, you could swap sensors as a troubleshooting step, otherwise, you may need to buy a couple and rotate them through until you find the 1 that's broken.

Bought 4 new sensors on Ebay - replaced them on my Ford Explorer. After 1 day not working. All four not working. Is there a fuse that is related to the sensors or what else can I check
@DeathScouter8 жыл бұрын
+Diane Blomker Did they work for that 1 day? If so, your problem is definitely with the sensor(s) and not any other components. If it worked after changing them all out, you may have had a new sensor blow after the 1st day, which would take the system offline again. If swapping them all out NEVER fixed the problem then let me know what year your Explorer is and I'll try to look up which fuse is for your sensors. If it's not the fuse or the sensors, I would take a look at the wiring or locate the control board.

i don't have a "wand" either. I am wondering if i can just disconnect them one-by-one to see which one clears the fault ...OR.... are they wired in "series" and will not work with one removed (like xmas-tree lights) ??
@DeathScouter9 жыл бұрын
Allen Traylor If you get your ear close, you can hear the ticking and you don't need the inductance wand. I used that simply to amplify the ticking so the camera picked it up. All 4 sensors work in series which is why 1 bad one takes the entire system offline. For $30-$40 bucks, it might be worth the time savings to buy all new ones and be done with it. If that fixes the problem and curiosity starts getting the better of you, then you can spend some time swapping them out 1 at a time to find out which ones are defective and you may end up with a spare or 2. It all depends on what your time is worth to you.

Good points.. My 2006 Chrysler 300c is a bit mor complicated with and L.C.D . indicator display, just ONE of those sensors cost me $40.00 , it was intermittent but now its like its shorted out, I'm assuming the issue is the same...I'll give this all a try.... Thank you

I feel for you. I just spent more than a thousand with a dealer who couldn't figure out my soft brake pedal on a different vehicle. "Most of the time... its the master cylinder" Well, not this time, and then not the vacuum assist, and then not the ABS module....

HAHA- MY DEALERSHIP WANTED $251 JUST FOR A SINGLE SENSOR!! I ordered a 4-pack of eBay for 25 bucks.

Yup... same experience I had. Sad isn't it? No need for dealers to screw us so badly....

I'm replacing my bumper but want to reuse my old backup sensors. Does anyone know if it's possible to remove and reuse the backup sensor bumper mount holder?
@DeathScouter8 жыл бұрын
+BARFYADAMS That will likely change per vehicle. I know on my Jeep Commander, the sensor holders are glued to the (plastic) bumper skirt, so they are incorporated into the bumper design and not detachable. I would suspect that (as with my Ford truck) a plastic holder that is in a steel bumper is probably able to be removed and reused.

+DeathScouter It's a 2006 F150 Lariat. The bumper is the same as the one in your video.

Just a follow-up on my "ebay special" backup sensors. Since making this video, I just had 1 of my sensors fail and need to be replaced again. I'm not sure how the quality of my "ebay specials" compare to OEM since I bought the truck used, but the ebay price is STILL $35 for 4 new sensors, so I found and replaced the bad sensor and now have 3 spares.

BARFYADAMS We've had constant rain here (Baltimore) so I didn't spend a lot of time under the bumper looking to how to reuse the mounting holes. As soon as it dries up a little, I'll get back under the truck and see if I can figure out how to remove the mounts.

Anyone know how I can disable this system from my truck? I have a plow on it and it gets really old to listen too
@DeathScouter5 жыл бұрын
As you can see, there was an "off" button to turn it off for the times when you have a trailer or other reason why the sensors wouldn't be needed. I'm not sure if your vehicle is the same.
@lutherjohnson14235 жыл бұрын
@@DeathScouter yes my truck is the same, however I'm looking just to unhook it permanently. I've normally got a trailer on it and it gets annoying turning it off every time

Anybody have any idea if bad sensors would cause the system to act like something is behind me when nothing is? I can't seem to find anyone else who has this problem.
@DeathScouter8 жыл бұрын
+Allen Reed Typically they die, but I don't see why a bad sensor wouldn't do what you're describing.
