I went thru the Canal with my 35' Catamaran in 1980. Cost me 200$. Linemen came from other Yachts - we helped each other. Times have changed.

There is always Cape Horn, being a much cheaper passage to the Atlantic from the Marquesas.

True, sadly currently not an alternative with a 10m vessel with closed borders in Chile&Argentina with no possible stops inbetween though. (see episodes beforehand) It was our intended plan.

Another entertaining episode from Thula well done in the canal. I've heard from a number of cruisers who report exactly what you have, when using the Panama Canal have a wad of cash with you because everyone has their hand out. Some charges are explainable but most are not however the only other option is a very long, expensive and dangerous trip via the Drake Passage. The South Pacific was amazing cant wait for your Atlantic crossing home to Europe. Watching you reminds me of my mother and father in-law who were from Germany before moving to Canada. They were great people watching you each week provides me with that slice of German culture I miss. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us.

Good info on canal. Seems crazy for 4 line handlers, but a simple accident in the canal could cost millions. Them knowing about currents from ships etc priceless. Enjoy your cruise

Thanks! To the Panama Canal: There could be more uncomplicated solutions for getting yachts through looking at how other canals handle it worldwide. And it happened to us that we had a Panamanian advisor on board with some, let’s say, quite dangerous decisions & actions we as a crew in the end had to deny as they brought us into dangerous situations, us needing to do what we thought was right in the last second. The stress level on board can be very high if this happens. The advisors all have very varied experiences with boats they have brought through.

I enjoyed the trip through the Panama Canal very entertaining and educational thanks for that, wow those lines were so thick they could have sunk your boat !!!!! I spent 1.5 years working on the construction of a road tunnel under the Suez Canal back in the 1970s, very close to where the Ever Given hit the bank, in more ways than one. Maybe the Suez should employ the stern tug idea used on the Panama canal. Have a great journey back to Germany, sail safe.

Sadly being German is a bit of a handicap when dealing with bureaucracy, you belong to a very law abiding society. We have cruised and transited the canal 3 times. Being told that it is coincided international waters ( we never asked), we went straight to the watch tower did the paper work then the bank, paid the money and though we went. Now remember we did this three times, never seeing or speaking to harbour authorities, customs or immigration. And off we sailed into the Pacific, no gave a shit. Being Kiwi's a think may help. We are definitely not the only cruisers to have done this, having told and pasted it on. ⛵🌏⛵🌎. Phil

3.30am until around sundown is the time we took. From Atlantic to Pacific they sometimes also let you stay a night at a buoy in Lake Gatún.

I don't know much about sailing, but I wonder why everyone go's through the Panama canal, is it not possible to go around South America? I know it's stormy around the bottom of South America but is that all the time? I mean sailing around you could visit some beautiful ports in Chile, Argentina, Brazil ect, I think it would be epic even if it added on a few extra months, so what? Do any sailboats go around? The Pacific Islands are awesome you people are lucky as f**k!

It was originally our plan to head back that way though through Covid the borders of Chile&Argentina stayed closed - unfortunately! Otherwise the Panama Canal wouldn’t have seen us a second time!😉 So South America stays for our second round in a few years 😎

You probably werent around when Noreiga was running Panama, and the US stopped his crimes..lots of corruption there, when the US ran the canal it was a lot better, and when it was given back to Panama well you now see what happens, they need the money and who knows where it goes, things dont change much though in history and the upgraded in 2016 was another nightmare. late.over budget by over 25% and quality problems

The canal wasn't 'given back'. The country of Panama was formed from buying the land from Columbia. The U.S. finished the canal in 1914. Idiot Jimmy Carter when president gave the canal to Panama. Crime and corruption is a way of life. I don't know what Phil is about but I've been 3 times through the canal, as if that mayters.

On the same day thousands of US soldiers who have been “protecting the waterway” will leave, finally handing back a 1,474 sq km area over which Washington has exercised total sovereignty.
