Trout Magnet: Setup

This video will take you through the very important steps to set up the Trout Magnet.

14 years later, after catching trout with spinners, flies, power bait, corn, eggs, etc.. I’m finally going to give this a try tomorrow morning. Got the rod and the full kit ready to go.

YES. Using 10 lb line you will not be able to cast the Trout Magnet very far, so you will add split shot to get distance. Heavy split shot will dampen the effectiveness of Trout Magnets. Use 2 lb SOS line, 2 lb. fluoro leader and one size "B" split shot if conditions warrant. Our 2 lb SOS is a copolymer line with excellent stretch & abrasion features. Yes. They are fantastic in ponds. Set the float to the depth where fish are holding and fish with very slight rod twiches followed by longer periods of pausing. Vary the length between pauses until you discover what works that day..

The triple surgeon knot demonstrated in the clip is strong and very easy for anyone to tie, which is why we showed it. The blood know you mentioned is a great strong knot too but requires a bit more skill as does the uni to uni. Use the knot you are most comfortable tying..

ATLDART - your thinking is right on..! In shallow spots where trout are holding definitely employ the "twitching" method.. I would even present the Trout Magnet a bit up stream of where you are intentionally wanting to fish and let it drift down into the trout's strike zone. Sore Lip 'Em All..

@BorisWDell - Use the same techniques we decribe to fish the Trout Magnet. Using the EZ Trout Float, set your depth to where the fish are holding. Occasionally, lightly twitch the float to impart action. It does not take much to create action with a Trout Magnet. You may be limited as to how deep you can fish the Trout Magnet as determined by rod lenght and the physics of casting. Also fish w/o a float, using a twitch or very slow retrieve depending on depth. This is a great question.. Our typical rod is a 6'6" light line rod with a fast action. It canbe hard to fish the Trout Magnet deep under the float on this rod. We use and recommend a longer rod like our 9' Trinity Series when fishing deeper or needing to cast further. This rod does the trick. If you need to get the Trout Magnet down to fishing position quickly use a size "B" split-shot. Anything larger than a "B" can deaden the action of the Trout Magnet. Sore Lip 'Em All..

A Trout Magnet is a split-tailed grub body fished on a shad dart jig head that has a unique presentation for trout. It comes in 22 trout catching colors. It falls horizontally or flat in the water. It is never jigged, rather slightly twitched as we demonstrate in another video clip. The Trout Magnet can be fished under an EZ Trout Float set so that the Trout Magnet suspends just a few inches off the bottom. It also can be twitched on a tight line. Light line and fluorocarbon are key to success.

2 RECOMMENDED METHODS: 1)Deadly drifted under an E-Z Trout Float. Adjust E-Z Trout Float to allow the Trout Magnet to drift a few inches off the bottom. Drift Trout Magnet naturally with current, set hook when float goes under. 2)DO NOT jig the lure. Use constant small twitches of the rod tip (1-3”) and reel just enough to keep the lure off the bottom. Never let the Trout Magnet touch the bottom. Stay upstream & use a quartering cast to sweep the Trout Magnet in front of the fish.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR BEST RESULTS: •Hook Up: The Trout Magnet body should be tight to the shad-dart jig head, with the hook coming out the split of the tail. Make sure the body is straight on the hook. For best action, use 2 lb. test line and a 2lb. fluorocarbon leader. •For moving water, use one B or BB split shot about 12-14 inches above the Trout Magnet.

how to fish in the deep water if i do bank fishing? If i want to fish 5-6 feet, it will be hard to do the long cast due to the fixed bobber on the line? 3x.

Trout Magnet are best fished under small floats like our EZ Trout Float. Set float to depth that fish are holding and adjust until you find where the fish are holding. Dead drift the setup with the current and set the float whenever it does something that you or the current did not cause.. Sore Lip 'Em All..

We prefer a bit longer rod, like a 6'6". We like a fast action tip on a rod with some backbone. Sometimes the shorter light action rods have a bit too much flex and not enough backbone to set a hook, and thus hard to twitch. Try yours and see if you can "twitch" with it.. Remember when twitching you only need to slightly move the Trout Magnet with light twitches of the rod tip [1-3"] while slowly reeling in the line. This is a deadly technique when mastered. "Suppleness" - Right now the fluorocarbon technology is not quite there. That is why our SOS line [copolymer] is outstanding with distance and accuracy. Also, when you go straight fluoro you loose stretch in the line, it is heavier than mono or copolymer and sinks causing premature drag on your presentation. That's why right now we like mono/copolymer mainline w/ a fluoro leader. We are constantly looking out for the perfect fluorocarbon line - when we find it we will have it on our site.

@lelandslures This brings up another question... I remember my dad getting me an original pack of trout magnets several years ago at a fishing convention. I remember them having an anise oil type scent. Did they used to have scent and that was discontinued?

You can sure try it, but remember to only slighty twitch the Trout Magnet, DO NOT JIG. We prefer a bit longer rod with some backbone [this is power for setting the hook] and a fast tip [this softer tip action allows for using light line, making great casts and extrememly useful in "twitching". We think our 6'6" Sore Lip Series rod is the perfect rod. However, there are many good rods that will work. Generally speaking 6'6" rods are easier to twitch than 4-5' rods. Sore Lip 'Em All..

@NguyenVanThock2185 - Non of our bodies are scented and therefore legal to fish in any water across the country. We have found that scent is not needed to effectively catch more fish with the Trout Magnet.

I bought the trout magnet neon kit...best fishing investment! I've never tried it on trout but every single color works amazing on crappie and perch.There's only 1 spot where i can fish for trout and id say its anywhere from 1.5ft to 5ft deep in the creek where brown and rainbows are stocked.What would be the best setup for this?please help!

In very slow moving water our twitch method would be best. Adapt and apply our techniques to best fish the waters you are on. If you are seeing trout turn off of a Trout Magnet that is when the twitch method shines.. Sore Lip 'Em All

johnnymohani - your rod is a little too stiff for our liking. Most likely you will not be able to cast the Trout Magnet as far as normal using this rod of yours. The whole Trout Magnet setup weighs very little a little more that 1/64th of an ounce. A light action rod will load slightly and cast our setup better. There are many rods that will work properly to cast the Trout Magnet. We are very BIG on using 2lb line and 4lb if you just cant go to 2lb.. Sore Lip 'Em All...
