Few would argue that both of those fish have virtually infinite culinary potential and you've only just set out on that long and flavorful adventure. You could even make a cook-off / rivalry out of it since you both know your way around the kitchen. Great vid, as usual...

I remember as a kid in Texas I loved trout and flounder although eating trout was a real chore because of the number of bones and since my parents scared the death out of me to not swallow any bones, I was reluctant to eat trout. Once moving to Alaska and having the opportunity to eat salmon changed my views on eating fish, of course, having king crab too, made all the difference in the world. Halibut was a bit more difficult to come by and the meat was a bit more on the dry side, but still very good. My step-Dad flew a tail dragger Cessna so we were able to fly across the Inlet down to Silver Salmon Creek not only to escape the now crowed creeks and rivers but for the privilege of having our limit of fish within less than an hour and boy did we eat well. I hope you are enjoying all the fish you can get!

I am surprised you are not able to catch enough fish in Alaska! Well during the salmon runs you catch salmons and fill up your freezer! Dipnetting works better for filling the freezer. That should be good till the next year salmon run. In between you can catch fish in stocked lakes in your area. Dept. of fish and games have names of all the stocked lakes in your area. These are generally stocked with salmon and trout. The salmons don't grow too big but if you catch enough of them and you will, you can make a meal out of them.

Greetings, New subscriber here. I am very interested how you work out the heat for your chicks. The only option we have is to bring them in the house by the wood stove. This can be very tempting for our cat. We have a neighbor who rotates out 15 of their chickens every year. They give them to us and we keep them for layers for 2 more years then they go in the caner. Our chicken coop has tow rooms, one for Layers and the other for the meat birds and broody hens. They have separate runs as well. The chicken coop has it's own 200 watt solar power system but the battery is not big enough to run a heat lamp all night and all day. I am thinking about moving 2 L-16 retired batteries out there when we get a new bank for the house someday so I am very interested to see how the heat lamp works out for you. By the way that's how we used to cook our fish on the trail in the High Sierras. Have a great night.
@SimpleLivingAlaska5 жыл бұрын
Off Grid In the Pacific North West, hello! We lived in Oregon and raised hundreds of chicks we were in zone 8. We were not off grid then and what worked for us was two weeks in a brooder, the second week we would take the heat lamps further away and by 2 weeks broilers and layers were outside in chicken tractors with the lamp for a night or two, after that they were fine. The temps were never below freezing though at night and it did cost us quite a bit in energy the first week. Here we are planning to do a similar plan but have a heat lamp on them a little longer as we are in Alaska. I'm sure the heat lamp will cost us but the type of chicken we are getting will raise their own chicks and will not need heat lamps in the winter. We will most likely hook up a small solar powered light to help them with the shorter days. Thanks for watching :)
@dynamicliving31115 жыл бұрын
@@SimpleLivingAlaska definitely do whatever you can to keep that heat lamp going. We had chicks on and offgrid, off-grid I attempted having them inside and using hot water bottles to keep them warm. It was extremely high maintenance and very poor results, heat lamp is definitely the go to. Even though it will probably suck up all your battery juice :/
@offgridinthepacificnorthwe32105 жыл бұрын
@@dynamicliving3111 I think I have a solution. I need to trench in a water line to the coop. I could add a 120 volt circuit from the main house solar system in the same trench. Thanks for the advice.

I like both trout and salmon, but if I had to decide I'd pick the trout. Fresh salmon is fairly rich so I can only have it in small doses. I think you'd really love our Eastern brookies (trout) ... wild caught brookies (not stocked) are on the smaller side but they're sometimes so deep in color you'd have a problem telling them apart from a salmon (the flesh, I mean). They are also delicious cooked just about any way, and any leftovers make awesome fishcakes.

I ran the numbers regarding solar energy just for fun, and I either messed something up badly, or it's *freakin expensive*. Could you correct me if I'm wrong? You've said that on a cloudy day you're getting 134W of power. Let's round that up to 200W, and assume that on average you are getting 10h of that sunlight, every day. And that you are using every single watt of it. And that energy price is $0.2/kWh (source: electricitylocal.com/states/alaska/ rounded up). So 200W * 10h * 30 days = 60kWh/mo, which would cost 60kWh/mo * $0.2/kWh = $12/mo. And you paid $2000 for it, so you will break even after $2000 / $12/mo / 12mo = 13.8 years. That's like eternity! Should I start to appreciate being connected to the grid? :D
