I finally figured out all those vegetative rootstock whips and suckrrs can be easily rooted for free rootstock. Perfectly legal as long as you don't sell them.

i start my tongue the same way as you. i see some start it straight. i have trouble cutting the tongue straight on.. from starting the tongue this way i have had trouble getting it to slide together. every year i get better and better. grafting in strange positions really helps you learn. anyone can graft on a bench lol. i experimented this year with grafting scions 1.5-2 feet long. looks like they are taking good for now. some i didnt support or brace. kinda want to see what i can get away with. a few i used this green stretchy self tacking tape. the tape has a clear plastic you have to remove. this tape is harder to find. works great pulling the graft together if you have a mismatch or large wood. i noticed last year the bigger the scion, the better the growth from the graft. i even got a ashmeads fruit from the same season graft scion. ashmeads has been super vigorous.

MRgreen I believe you’re right. Bigger scions are more vigorous in my experience too. I’ve never been a great grafter. But apples are a great tree to start learning. They are forgiving.

Great video , thanks for sharing. I bought few plants by the beginning of this year and they are growing well. And I want learnt grafting. When you say " wax " did you use anything, like aloevera, banana etc , at the tip or at the join part ?

Hi John, if I’m getting a dormant bareroot rootstock in the mail, should I plant and let the rootstock wake up for a few weeks before I attempt to graft a dormant scion to it?

Hi my friend, I have a question I hope you can answer. I want to plant an apple and peach orchard and I want a significant amount of trees and I can’t find information on this, are there Apple rootstock seeds I can buy and grow to young saplings myself? or are they just cut off a mother trees roots? I would like to have as many rootstocks for the cheapest cost because I want to offset the cost as much as possible because I plan on doing tall spindle for Apple and hex v for peaches which is quite expensive.

You can really only grow apple rootstock from seed and expect to get a full sized tree. I’ve seen some size variance, such as when planting crabapple seed, but it’s completely sporadic. You can “multiply” your rootstocks. One common method is termed stooling, I think. I expect peaches can be done the same way.
