Thank you for the video. My wheels were frozen up with dirt and rust. The cables were shot, too! I attempted to remove the bottom cover of the transmission, but saw that the shaft was turning when I turned the pulley, so I put the screws back in the cover and looked farther to the wheels. I did have a devil of a time removing the right gear behind the wheel. I stripped the T30 screw head. I finally welded a T30 tip to the screw head and was able to remove the screw. I replaced it with a 1/4 x20 Phillips screw. Great explanation of the inner workings of the transmission. Thanks again!

Follow up on my front wheel drive problems: after cleaning up the axle shaft and outer gears and wheels, now the wheels will slowly turn, but will stop once the wheels contact the ground. The pulley and axle shaft are spinning, but the wheels will not pull the motor. I suspect the inside of the transmission is bad. I may try to mess with it, but I may just use it as a push mower now that the wheels turn freely. Do you have a source part number for the transmission if I choose to replace it? Thanks!

Great video and very helpful but is the pin 3mm(.118") or is it 1/8" (.125") diameter because those would be common dowel pin sizes and readily available in the length you show. If you install a 3mm pin in a 1/8" hole the shaft hole will rapidly deform and that will cause the pin to fail again soon.

Awesome video! Requesting some advice. Checked Google a number of different ways and didn't quite find what I was looking for... With engine in or off, my Troy-Bilt Xp self-propelled pushnower squeaks substantially from the rear axle as you walk it around. I've serviced both wheels via lubing the gears, axle ends, and sleeves and detemined it was the trans from balancing the rear up on a block, spinning the wheels by hand, and hearing the noise come from the transmission. I hope to take the trans apart, identify why it squeaks, flush it and add new fluid. What kind and volume of oil is generally used? Is a permatex silicone gasket bead appropriate for sealing these up? Thank you!!!
@baxrok2.5 жыл бұрын
I do not have access to a factory service manual. In my opinion, a gear oil around 90 weight or so will do. As for volume I'd say around 1 ounce or so. You can measure the amount that comes out and use that for your approximate amount to put back in. Yes, Permatex gasket sealant, the gray kind found in auto parts stores, should do just fine. Good luck!

It's very difficult to find parts for lawn mowers for a number of reasons. If you are very handy and patient at searching the internet, with some work you might be able to find the part. If that doesn't work for you, then you can go to a local mower shop and try to find someone with enough patience and skill to help you. Finally, you might go online to a site like Craigslist and find a used mower that someone is selling or giving away and try to scavenge the parts from it. No matter which way you choose, unfortunately, I don't think it will be very easy.

Stuck screws are a science of their own. So, it's hard to give advice that works. Use the tool that fits the best, use a bit of penetrant, perhaps some gentle persuasion, etc,. You just have be careful of not breaking the head off of the bolt because that makes a hard job even harder.

Can the pin be replaced without removing transmission from the mower?
@baxrok2.4 жыл бұрын
Although I didn't try repairing it without removing it, I do think you can do it while it's still on the mower. All you really need to do, if it is the pin that's broken, is to drop the bottom half of the case and replace the pin. As far as I can recall, all of the screws on the bottom of the case as well as the other parts, are still accessible when it's on the mower. It may be more challenging to do it that way but still you should be able to do it. If you try, let us know.

Is it possible to set the transmission vto constantly run , spinning the wheels, without the use of a drive cable.. Say u broke your drive cable. And where you place the drive cable, You can just set it to what the drive cable usually does when it is functioning properly..And when you crank it the wheels start spinning with the belt. If so. Would you know how to do that?
@baxrok2.4 жыл бұрын
This could be done but would require some engineering. You'd have to find a way to keep the arm that the cable pulls back pulled back tightly all the time. Perhaps a very strong spring on the arm and then attach it to the body of the mower.
@C000DY4 жыл бұрын
@@baxrok2. that's what I was trying to do. Basically the lever that attaches to the normal drive cable, But have it set wide open just like you have the drive cable set. But nothing wants to work properly.. I'd rather have it go wide open. Then buy another drive cable.
@baxrok2.4 жыл бұрын
@@C000DY Alternatively, you could take a wire and hook it into the the lever, pull the lever back to engage the drive, and then make it just long enough to reach a bolt or something fixed on the body of the mower. Unlike a spring that could give a bit, the wire would be fixed and considerably stronger to hold the lever over and in place. Of course, you have to be sure before you start, that the drive system is working properly to begin with. The belt etc. On the down side, it is possible that with the drive engaged all the time that might make it very difficult to start the mower.
@C000DY4 жыл бұрын
@@baxrok2. yea I'm gonna take the blade off tomorrow and get in there and take the cover off and see if the wheels start spinning when I engage the part. If it doesn't work. Then I'll wait for the cable. But if it works. At least I can cut the grass.. 😅
