When Achilles fights in this movie, he seems more like an artist (of death) rather than a warrior. His movements are so beautiful and fluid almost like he's dancing on the battlefield. Romanticised war couldn't get any better.
@Relixification3 жыл бұрын
If you look closely, the way he fights, is just his version of perfection. No wasted movement 4:47 he places his shield to his back not only to get faster climbing up but to block an incoming arrow. Another instance is 5:16 where he jumps of a palisade to not only kill from the flank of a shield bearer but to dodge the incoming spearmen behind him.

4:44 is my favorite sequence. It gives the illusion that Achilles is completely invincible with his fluid movement, easy evasion of swings, and the perfect timing of the shield placement as the arrow hits it the moment he puts it on his back. He cuts through soldiers like ants and it shows how easily he dispatches them. It also ends with his signature finisher which is through the shoulder into the heart lunge. The choreography for this movie was just spectacular. They maintained his fighting style throughout the whole movie from start to finish.

They did Achilles character a great deal of Justice in this film. The arrogance and charisma of him works together perfectly. He brings 50 Myrmidons with him and must lose nearly half of them in this opening battle but they all go willingly, eager to grasp a little of their leader’s legend. Achilles is on this beach for himself and himself alone, more for whim then war. He’s the epitome the Greek hero. Magnificent and flawed. Capable of nobility and cruelty all at the same time. Defiant to kings and gods. Petulant and courageous. Brad Pitt Carrie’s that easy, almost annoyed cockiness with such skill and later, the volcanic anger when his ego is threatened. This beach battle is legendary but the dead men he leaves behind, who might’ve lived to see home otherwise, are a testament to the cost of Achilles greatness.

oddly enough that times standards hector was seen as the ideal warrior, leader and a good man while Aristotle refers to Homer's portrayal of Achilles as a character with bad traits who is still depicted as a good person. which is funny as it mirrors the american of gangsters, and greedy business men. all averice with nothing else. the way you romanticize his vanity, achilles is a tragic character because he is one dimensional, like a highschool jock who peaked senior year. he is a cautionary character.

It has been a while since I read up on this stuff so I may get something wrong or new evidence has been found since then, but to put it short and simple here's what I remember: Occurences like this were quite common because of a combination of personal glory, making your name known to the enemy - a great warrior was widely known and struck fear in the hearts of his enemies - and, a very important fact: To get attention from the gods. In the hellenic world, for them gods were pretty much real and visited the earth quite often. So when you were doing great deeds, like killing a well known hero, doing some suicidal charge or winning fights against all odds, it seems to have been a quite common thing to shout your name, maybe some deed you did in the past or right now, so the gods would look at you and acknowledge you.

The ancient beaching tactic was to sail into the shore at an angle (anywhere from 30 to 80 degrees), using the hull itself as a wall to deflect incoming missiles while your own throwers/archers fired at the defenders. sailing straight into the shore with the bow of the ship aimed at the enemy is both reckless and impractical. leaves your unloading forces open to attack on both sides.

@@MugRuith For the early history of amphibious warfare, we have writings, plays, vases and the like all the way back to the egyptians fighting a bronze age "nation" only known as the "Sea People" because we literally don't know much about them except from few ancient egyptian sources. But apparently the egyptians fought them both on sea and on the shores. This was followed by the hellenic states who resorted to amphibous landings (leading to quite regular opposed assaults upon the shores) because a lot of cities were on islands or close to the sea - again, we know this due to plays and other expressions of art. The biggest, probably opposed, amphibious landing up until the battle of Gallipoli happened in 490BC at the battle of Marathon. Now if you want sources - Check out everything from "Herodotus of Halicarnassus", you'll find a lot of stuff in it, but I cannot tell you exactly every single verse mentioning the battle of Marathon. Caesar had an opposed landing when going for Britain too. For those sources, check out "Commentaries on the Gallic War" and "Commentaries on the Civil War" by Julius Caesar himself. For a lot of other sources, you have to search for the specific vases, plays, writings and other depictions of such occurences, there's tons of it. Sadly we lost a lot of hellenic writings and stuff over the centuries. Some recommendations are: "Amphibious Warfare in the Ancient World", James M. Tucci "History of the Peloponnesian War", Thucydides "The Anabasis of Alexander", Alexander A YT channel called Invicta made a video about amphibious landings too, if you want to check that out. He's pretty much using the same sources I just gave you. Maybe that's easier to start with than reading through tons of different texts.

You can see quite a few of the moves he used against Hector later on, including the elbow to the face at the 4:50 mark and the final move he does here is also what he used against hector at the end of their fight, though with a spear instead of a sword.

If Troy had been made today the whole battle woulda been in shoddy CGI, most of the army forces would consist of women with half-shaved heads of varying colors of the rainbow as the men stay behind in their boats cheering them on, and Achilles, played by Melissa McCarthy, insisting pronouns be used to etch her name in eternal woke glory. Movies like this will never be made again.
@McPh17413 жыл бұрын
No doubt. I’m actually surprised it’s not up for a reboot to “modernize”it. In the Iliad, Achilles and Patroclus were lovers. In this movie, they made them cousins. Of course, that would be the center of the whole story if remade today.

They were neither lovers, nor cousins. They were great friends, both reared under Chairon's care. Achilles already had a wife, and a son, Neoptolomus. Although it was common for ancient Greek men to take male lovers, Homer never once suggests that Achilles' and Patroclus' relationship was sexual.

I agree with historians and battle tacticians that amphibious landings like this are great for movie drama not so much in historical accuracy. The Greeks would have landed a few miles away and just marched over land to Troy. They’d have taken the beach and could then beach their supply ships. Doing it this way caused more deaths then would have been acceptable.

Phoenix was actually Achilles' tutor and, ehh, most of the least unknowns? Lol. He's also the one who tries to persuade Achilles to rejoin the war after he withdrew in anger. Menesthius was killed by Paris. Alcimedon served under Patroclus. Other two idk anything about lol.

They really perfected the part about him being immortal, but in a realistic way. At 4:48 as he puts the shield onto his back an arrow hits it, meaning if that shield wasn't there he gets an arrow in his back. It was just a great way to show his legend without making it too unrealistic.

Achilles is legit indestructable, he was by far the strongest warrior of that era due to his parents and his blessing, he legit needed divine intervention in order to get killed in the Iliad, his heel (Achile's heel) is literally the only part of his body that is vulnerable. In the movie he is seen dodging and being a perfect warrior but in the Iliad a sword would literally break if it came in contact with him and skills wise he was also insane just like he is in the movie.

The screenplay was disappointing in many respects, but Brad Pitt nailed his role and so did Eric Bana, along with the other actors. The choreography in this scene and in the duel is spectacular, and Wolfgang Petersen delivered an aesthetically beautiful movie. Great scene action wise, I just cant ignore the Greeks fighting with Roman military formations hundreds of years before Rome was a thing, the boats not arriving at an angle to protect them from arrow volleys (like cops use their cars for), and the fact the sunrise is behind on them on horizon, which would be impossible as the Greeks would be sailing due East to Troy (Turkey). So the sun would have been in front of them not behind them...lol

I understand if this is video is meant to give focus to Achilles but, one of my favorite parts to the scene is how there's a speech from Hector given his men before they ride to the beach right before the speech Achilles gives to his men at the start of this video before they arrive on the beaches. It's like the movie is trying to portray them as equals even though when they fight, Achilles is clearly a superior even though by a slimmer margin than others that have fought him before.
