So, the first time I had really been exposed to Greek Mythology was in Age of Mythology, which features Ajax pretty definetly as a good guy. So I was really surprised when I found myself wanting Hector to win. This movie did a good job of making him a likeable character.

@fullmetalfunk wow great idea, transcribing the Iliad & Odyssey into music!! I think nobody did that so far (except maybe some individual songs). there´s so many themes & motives in the Iliad & Odyssey: each hero / foe, each woman, the major battles / duels, the deaths of heroes, artifacts ("the Walls of Troy", "the Spear of Achilles", "the Wooden Horse" etc.), situations ("the Wrath of Achilles", "the Madness of Ajax", "the sack of Troy" etc.) there´s plenty for 10 albums :) good luck man!!

One of the few things I like in this movie: Ajax's attitude. Hector skewers him. Does he give up? No. He keeps right on going, on the premise that if he's going to die, he's at least going to try and take Hector with him. RIP, big guy.

@brian2189114 You're right about that. However for the purposes of entertainment they obviously have to make changes to the original story. But still you would agree that it is cool to see such scenes inacted in films. You can appreciate the battles that occured in the past between such legends as Hector and Ajax.

@Lhein33 it´s not an "information" but a renarration, i.e. a novel, "The Song of Troy" by Colleen McCullough. there she tries to tell the events as thy might really have happened. the book is interesting, entertaining & throws a new light on some of the heroes & events (it doesn´t contradict the Iliad though). it made me think that some things might have been different as they´re told in the Iliad. of course wo don´t even know if the characters really existed. yes, it´s literature :)

@tiagoinka14 жыл бұрын
That my whole point. I think therefore the screenwriter has all the right to change a couple of things here and there. By letting Ajax die on the battlefield against Hector he has successfuly shown to the audience how brave and strong was Ajax (who otherwise would get no major role anyway), and how skillful was Hector. A double win.

@fullmetalfunk i can imagine it´s not easy. but it´d be really cool, renarrating the stories for a young audience who maybe doesn´t know so much about the original epics. they might be very old but they have everything a modern soap opera has: love, friendship, heroes, villains, cowards, cheating, hope, disappointment, forgiveness, revenge, inner conflicts, outer conflicts, suspense, drama, etc. etc. etc. good luck with your songs.

Yes, I liked Ajax a lot when he sees Achilles fighting on the beach, he ignores that rat Agamemnon's command just to help him. He even rows the ship, though he's a king, to make it go faster. Then he fights valiantly, oblivious to the fact that he himself might get hurt, and not because of self-satisfaction as in many heroes. A friend in need is a friend indeed And then they had him die so early. *sniff*

Ajaz did not die in the Trojan War. It was him and Odysseus who retrieved Achilles's body and performed the funeral rites. There are a couple of stories of Ajax and his adventures after the war.
@harpiyon13 жыл бұрын
@Lhein33 i read a modern renarration of the Trojan War, "The Song of Troy" by Colleen McCullough, in which she tries to give an historic account without any mystic stuff. Achilles was busy conquering the allies of Troy & came back to Troy only in the 10th year of the war, when all allies were defeated or destroyed. He had heard of Hector & wanted to meet him on the battlefield. Hector had also heard of Achilles & wanted to to meet him. But they had to wait for that for 10 years.

we also know that some of these heroes existed. The palace of Odysseus was found in Epirus, a tomb with Achilles name dated 10th century b.c. was found in thessaly. A mention in the trojan war was found in hittite inscriptions. Also dont forget what myth and mythology means in greek, it means "quick history"(historical events written or told quickly from mouth to mouth)

Correct, Ajax and Hector fight one whole day, and ended with da draw, and they hab after this great respect to each other. Later when Achilles was killed Odysseus and Ajay safed Achilles Bodie and had the Wordlaw for his Armour, which Odysseus won, because he was very skilled with words. In this night Ajay had a nightmare, and raged up, because of Odysseus and killed all his Sheeps. When his Rage was over he killed himself with his own Sword because of shame.

In the Illiad, Ajax weilds a spear not a hammer and was considered the second greatest Greek in terms of fighting skills. However its states that he lost a sparring contest with Diomedes. In the film where Hector leads the Apollonian Guard to the beach front and Patroclus is mistaken for Achillies and killed, the Illiad says that Ajax held them off almost single handed jumping ship to ship to fight them.

In Illiad there were two heroes with the name Ajax. Ajax the Telamonios who is the guy shown in the movie and Ajax the Lokros who was a prince and didn't put him on the film. On contrary with this Ajax, the Lokros one was small but very fast that only Achilles could beat him running. He was also one of the best archers.

@PTCovers I care. I actually read the Odyssey in my English class. The W. H. D. Rouse translation. I thought there were two Ajax's or Aias's and one was the lesser and the other was the greater. @Lhein33 ah, interesting. yeah that does make sense. well i think McCullough is somewhere in-between 1 & 2. she does add some new aspects & focuses on them. and she also ctreates some contrasts with the original, but in fact they´re no real contrasts. it´s difficult to explain. i enjoyed it very much. some heroes are not as glorious as in the Iliad, others are a real revelation: e.g. Odysseus, he appears even smarter than in the Iliad & doing much background work during the entire war.

@philmartellus I agree. Diomedes is often being forgotten, also in other movies. I wonder why. He´s one of the most interesting characters: one of the best warriors (in a wrestling match he even beats Ajax) and as you say, he fought Gods & wounded them (though it was with the help of Athena). And he is smart & intelligent, he often goes with Odysseus on special missions, i.e. entering Troy by night & spying out the Trojans. just like secret agents. Diomedes should´ve been in the movie.

The Trojan War really happened.But not for Helen..The Greeks were enthusiased by the gold and glory of Troy and they wanted to conquer it.They really fought a 10 years war and many of these warriors were real.They conquered Troy after 10 years of fighting just to steal its treasures.Hommer unfortunately was not a historian but a lyric poet.It is amazing how he describes the arms,the traditions and culture of both sides.And he referred too much to Gods playing a major part in this war.

@harpiyon I haven't read this book, but I've read/seen similar ones. In ancient Greece there was not copyright and the myths were in variety. But today, away from this age, we study these texts from outside; it's different. Of course anyone can tell whatever he wants, but we cannot consider a book of our days "equal" to the Iliad. The creation of the Iliad is complicated of course, but from then and forth all the writers tried to stay close to the text. Besides, it's the first WRITTEN text.

wisgliebau you're right about Ajax :) I did like Eric Bana's portrayal of Hector in terms of his compassion and the fact that he cannot escape his fate and Troy's fate. But they messed with the story so much: Achilles and Paris alive for the sacking of Troy, Menelaus and Ajax killed by Hector, Briesis killing Agamemnon, etc. you might as well as call it a different story.

Never happened in the Iliad. Hector and Ajax fought to a draw (although Ajax had the upper hand) and both sides stopped the fight and called it a draw. They exchanged gifts. Hector gave him a sword, which Ajax later used to kill himself after being denied the honor of Achilles' honor which went to Odysseus and Ajax gave Hector a belt which Achilles later used to drag Hector's corpse from his chariot. Another thing, Hector, Ajax and Achilles were all big men, not like in the movie "Troy."

@Lhein33 (continuation) and many more. i think most characters are based on historic persons, they were probably different than depicted in the Iliad, but they lived. i find this totally intersting. maybe we´ll never know if it´s true or not. but imagine they find one day artifacts, e.g. weapons, a grave or a skeleton that can be clearly attributed to one or more of the characters from the Iliad. in this case, don´t you think that we´ll see the literary work in a new context?
@Lhein3313 жыл бұрын
@harpiyon May I learn where did you get this "information"? Or it's just a joke, because if it's so, I didn't understand it. Foot race? Sounds ridiculous to me. Reread the Iliad, book 22 and you'll see. Besides, outside the Iliad, we cannot say anything about the duel; history is still trying to study the general scheme of the war and of course will never be able to say if there were two heroes named thus who fought and what happened at their duel. When we study the Iliad, we study literature.

For the Ajax vs Hector crowd arguing....according to myth, Ajax 'won' a chance to fight Hector, neither one was killed and the fight was a draw. Achilles later killed Hector, and when Achilles was slain Ajax carried his body back to the Greeks. Ajax was considered the 2nd best warrior after Achilles, however Hector was also greatly admired by the Greeks for his fighting ability and courage.

Tbh if not with a stone mace and a beard of scardinavian god, thats how Homer described Ajax in his poem. He was the tallest fighter the greeks brought along and the strongest warrior they had. He actually fought against Hector and the match ended to a draw.
@Lhein3313 жыл бұрын
@MacBubbles That's true, but I think that all the other Trojans hit by Ajax didn't lose their helmets. It's generally believed by the producers of many flms that helmets prevent the audience from recognizing the fighters or seeing their facial expressions. In Troy, in the duels between Hector-Achilles, Ajax-Hector and Paris-Menelaus, all these men lose their helmets one way or another (except for Menelaus).

Hector's really lucky the swing at 0:46 didn't connect; it would've taken his head off. @Kisk79 That's exactly what I said. That he didn't kill himself because they denied him to lead Achilles' army, but because Achilles' armour was given to Odysseus. What do "most versions" say that I didn't say? If you mean the killing of the sheep, you're right. But that is not a contrast but a add by Sophocles.
