Menelaus is much more sympathetic in the Iliad, hell even Agamemnon is sympathetic there and his murder is a terrible crime. The writers seemed to have tried to make it good guys and bad guys, but that's Hollywood stuff, Homer and the myths are not about that and don't even have that idea, instead it's all about what is fated to happen, family loyalty, revenge, and the will of the gods.

@shadearca
@shadearca 3 жыл бұрын
@@stevepidge It's not Greek propaganda because the poem does not pull any punches on the shortcomings of the Greeks either. Hector was noble but also cruel, cocky and calculating. Sarpedon his closest ally openly accused him of using Troy's allies to fight the hardest battles and keeping his own forces back. Hector knew that he would not survive his duel with Achilles and fear overcame him at that moment. Also, Zeus played a cruel game with him that lead him to overestimate his abilities because Zeus was buffing him for much of the Iliad (part of his deal with Achilles's mother to punish the Acheans) and then after Achilles returned he withdrew his favor.
@stevepidge

@@shadearca The Illiad Greek Propaganda, In this film, everyone is more realistic and the oppressors were indeed greedy. I mean the Greeks were known to have egoistic, cocky poems like Hercules from nowhere joining the Greeks and sacking Troy and killing Paris, or that Paris for some reason had a curse and dies after the sack of Troy and Helena committed suicide by falling from a high building.
@shadearca
@shadearca 3 жыл бұрын
@@eho6380 What are you even talking about. There are no Greeks referenced in the poem at all. The war is between Acheans and Trojans who for all we know might have been both Greeks. Or Greeks(Achaens) against Hittites(Trojans). There is no greek poem that Helen kills herself. In Odyssey, she is back with Menelaus in Sparta as queen. Hercules's sacking of Troy was long before the Trojan War, it was because Priam's father hired him to kill a monster and then refused to pay him. Then Hercules sacked the city and made Priam king of Troy. Learn some facts before you comment.

Actually, the Romans being the descendant of the Trojan survivors is not true as Augustus, adopted son and heir of Julius Caesar, claimed ancestry through his adopted father from Aeneas and Aenea's mother Aphrodite. By the way, the Aeneid is written by the Roman poet Virgil during the reign and time of Augustus. I think this national epic story probably was written to appease and suck up to Augustus's petulant ego and reinforce his stupid claim without real and viable factual sources.

It is often overstated how afully the wives were treated in the olden days, sure, they werent treated with the respect they deserved but it could have been a lot worse than it is made to sound. Menaleaus (the guy who talked to hector) was in reality very faithful to his wife, and did not die during the war against troy, He was a very honorble man and a respected leader loved by all. The movie however makes him seem like a lustful jackass. His legacy does not deserve this.

Ah yes now things are starting to make much more sense. All along I have treated Paris and Helen with the utmost contempt for their adulterous behaviour. Whilst completely ignoring Menelaus' own *outrageous* adultery (kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIiTZohomJpgZtU). At least Helen chose a *Prince* to commit an affair with that she actually had *feelings* for. It appears Menelaus is content with people not of Helen's royal status just to have a good time. Which of course makes the pain of being cheated on *much worse* as any victim of adultery can attest to. Probably my male mind is hypersensitive to being cheated on myself and therefore I was outraged by Helen's transgressions and not Menelaus'. This *male victim affinity* is probably the root cause of the cruel inequity inflicted upon women who were unjustly punished for adultery over the centuries, in many cases completely unfairly for *ulterior male motives.* In any event, those men who used adultery laws to remove the righteousness of innocent harmless women from this world suffer the utmost pain in hell whilst their victims are reborn in heavenly planets. However, the cruel inequity should be fixed by applying *Wisdom* to remedy that cruel inequity, not normalising the outrageous crime of adultery. For example, by having women preside over trials involving women accused of adultery, and men over men, resulting in fair & just penalties. With the appeals process ending ultimately with the King and Queen, *or their equivalents* depending on the system of rulership. Not just for adultery but absolutely *any crime or complaint* anyone has with respect to anything at all without limitation. Noting in ancient texts it's recorded that even slaves had that right, when the evil of slavery was still *socially acceptable.* But it's in everyone's best interests to do the utmost to remove adultery from society specifically because it leads to *easily broken* marriages. And that is a problem because heaven on earth begins with the Love that exists between two people, the Love they bring their children into, the Love they raise them within. Even if the entire world has descended into hell on earth outside so long as that Love exists within the home there is *hope* for the *entire world.* But when that Love is destroyed there's no final bastion of hope *whatsoever.* So anything that increases adultery is diabolically bad for making it *socially acceptable.*

I feel bad for Menelaus, his wife betrayed him and his soon to be great allies didnt do the right thing to bring her back. I would be just as enraged as he and would burn cities because of it, not just Troy.

"ACHTUWALLY in the iliad-" Right ok we get it the Iliad and movie are different. But movies work completely differently to literature and that's why you'll very rarely find a movie that is completely accurate to the original books that is actually good

You can stick to the book or you do what Hollywood does all the time...take the names and the setting for marketing purposes and dumb it down to a good vs. bad story. You can make a movie while sticking to the book, would be no problem, but more complex. What Hollywood really does most of the time: lazy and dumb story telling for mainstream audiences. It's no big deal, but it has nothing to do with the Illiad at the end of the day.

Its a shame Menelaus was portrayed as a philandering brute in this movie. In the ilaid story, he was a good man and honorable king and Helen returned to him. If only this movie was made from the point of view of the Gods.

To be honest everyone is to blame. Menalues shouldnt have gotten an army to fight and involve innocent civilians. The girl was not loyal why would she be loyal again. of course Paris seriously should mind his own business King of Troy being to religous with the horse Agamemnon wanted to take down Troy regardless Achilees should have listened to his servant guy and Patroclus so that Hector would not have to die. Only innocent guy was Hector to be honest. But to be honest he should have just returned the girl and then slap Paris try another girl.

Well actually Menelaus is SO wrong in this movie. First of all he doesnt die in troy from Hector(that was the only thing i hated from this movie).He returnes as a hero with many tresures in Sparta and Helen is with him again saying that she is asamed for leting Paris get her.You can read all those in Odyssey.Actually Menelaus is one of the most beautyfull Greeks ever existed coss Zeus himself was his ansestor. :P well thats just a movie tho.

Have you ever been at war or even a fight? If so, you should know that a fight, especially one of life or death, scares the hell out of people. Ever been cut by a knife? That shit hurts like hell! Imagine thirty inches of steel being run through your stomach and out your back, which is what happened to Menelaus in this film. Not to mention that the Greek Gods were cruel and unpredictable. No telling if you would be sent to the Elysium or the Underworld. And you may not be sure if the gods exist at all; so there's no telling what'll happen after you die. You dare call Hector, a battle tested soldier who has every right to be scared, who went toe to toe with Achilles, a coward?! SHAME ON YOU!!
