Actually the sampling of a song that became an internet meme and turning it into a gay dance anthem is very authentic and unique in this case. Troye was a KZbinr before becoming a musician, so it’s kinda a fun nod to his own internet start.

Loved your reaction but I honestly think Got me Started used the sample in such a genius way. And when you hear him explain the proses you’ll recognise that it wasn’t used in that “sample” way. Most samples are trash but this one’s in the same range as Summer Renaissance (Donna Summers)

Ok I'll have to read that for a bit of perspective! I just think you've got to be careful when sampling in this way because it can be difficult to predict your listeners relationship with the original song!

I thinks it's so funny the way we react differently to the sample of "Shooting Stars" in Get Me Started. As a millenial 👵🏻, I enjoyed the song before the meme, so it was so wonderful hearing that familiar synth. I suggest you listen to the original song. If you watch the Got me started video 3 or 4 times, the sample will become an integral part of the listening experience. Shot in Bangkok at night time and dusk / dawn, the video gives off the high energy of a megalopolis, the steamy sultry heat and humidity of the urban tropics, and the beauty and energy of its inhabitants. Love that we have the same favorite song on the album! Cried listening to it, but it was like happy tears, of ready to acknowledge the past can never be returned to, yet being content with it. The sunlight across the face and new love to replace the one you lost has me hopeful for a future. Related a little too hard to it!

i think in relation to the sample for Got me started, the meme itself was always of like something flying through space . the reason it worked is because even tho it was funny it was kind of ethereal and nostalgic, and thats why it works in the song for me

And I did hear rumours as to that's why his long term relationship fell apart a couple of years ago... But I don't think it's ever been confirmed but that was kind of the rumours flying around... that Troye cheated. 🤷‍♀️

Very much agreed that the sample or rhythm or whatever can 'negatively' (sometimes) remind you of other memories, it will surely fade after some time. I used to feel the same about the sample as you, but after a couple of listens, that synth reminds me of nothing besides this song
