You really don't have to do any of this. Just take the left front tire off and you can access the two bolts that hold the thermostat in through the wheel well. It's really very easy and a whole lot less time consuming.

You are not very observant are you? He did it this way because he’s replacing the Alternator, the Belt, the Radiator and the Lower Hose with new parts.

@Ronald Jones the title says, thermostat housing replacement. Doesn't say anything else about replacing parts. The dude just stated if you are doing 1 thing only, targeting the thermostat you can easily access it through the front left wheel well. Meaning, if all you gotta do is change the thermostat then all these extra steps to change the thermostat in the video are just extra. Imagine someone changing a thermostat stat and they do all this extra work cause the video says to do it. Wouldn't that just be silly asf?

@@kevinserrano1623 yeah. It would be. However ig the guy who worked on the vehicle had different purposes in mind than whoever edited and published the video (if notnthe same guy), because he definitely changed other parts. Idk if maybe he made multiple videos using the same footage, but either or it wasn't recorded for the singular purpose of changing a thermostat. I didn't even know what the thermostat looked like until I guess it when he said "it" right after 4:50

So... this took me way longer than I expected! The bottom bolt for the alternator was hell! I ended up bending one of the hoses about a half inch out of the way to get my ratchet in there. The thermostat bolt in the back was a pain too but not as bad. Before I started, I drained the same house you showed of fluids. However, when I removed the thermostat the fluid spilled all over like a baby pissing the bed, lol. I had to remove the battery just to have room. Also, the fan made it a pain to remove the alternator. I'm the end, I was proud and happy to have saved hundred of dollars doing this myself! How to be a man, lol. I see you did this job in a shop. Real world is fuck all, lol! Thanks for the video though. It kept me on track for the duration as I did my repairs! 👍

Did you need to burp the coolant system? I did the same job today and i couldn’t find a bleeder valve so I squeezed the hoses to let some of the air out. the temperature has been running perfect all day. I have been worried though, Did I fully burp the system doing it that way with a thermostat change or should I burp it some more another way?

I was positive that the thermostat would be under the upper hose mount but I guess that made too much sense 😂

I tried this way and I’m having trouble with the hoses next to the alternator their too hard to move to the side for me to take off the bottom bolt should I remove the hoses? Seems like it’s too much to do just for the bolt

This video was very helpful. It saved me A LOT of frustration becuase where I thought the thermostate to be was not the correct location. The location of the thermostat on the 4.2 is in the most inconvenient spot, especially when removal of the alternator is required. I ended up replacing the radiator, thermostat, fan clutch, hoses and serpentine belt. Unfortunately, the fan clutch failed AFTER I had put everything back and ran the motor. So, I had to wait a day to let the engine cool and ended up draining the radiator TWICE. Fortunately, I was able to capture, strain/filter and reuse just over one (1) gallon of coolant being it was less than 24- hours old.

I'm guessing that this is for a 5.3-liter V8. It doesn't look anything like the 4.2-liter inline 6!

Thanks for the video, it was helpful. My mom had the thermostat replaced in her car awhile ago. She doesn't drive much, but in cool weather she kept getting a check engine light, OBD code P0128 - Low EC temp. While troubleshooting to eliminate the sensor I found the coolant temp never got above 167ºF so I replaced the t-stat myself. I was surprised that the one I took out was a 160ºF t-stat. I replaced it with the recommended 190ºF t-stat. Don't know why the guys at the shop went with the lower temp one.

Looks like you put in a new alternator and radiator while you were at it. Also I didn't hear any torque values for any of the hardware. Don't you torque your hardware?

You have to take off the alternator in the belts to do this thermostat housing ? Wow

Surprised you don't have to take the dam engine out just to do a simple thermostat change, thanks GMC 🤯🤡!

U don’t have to take the belt off all the way but it helps if u remember how it goes back in.
