I just used this video to replace my turbo in my 2013 and while it's a little different but its so similar that it helped as an overall guide. Bag you bolts and label them! It helped so much. I just wanted to say thank you so much TRQ! My car drives like new now it's so nice! Also for any one reading comments to see if there's other stuff to watch out for. Buy a oil return hose mine had the consistency of chewed bubble gum it was shot and a major failure point. Thanks again TRQ You guys rock!

With all do respect to you as a mechanic, after you are going thru all this...replace all the turbo lines ( do not use OEM, use steel braided lines) and clean that mess behind the shield, replace gaskets on the oil housing, it will save you a lot of headaches later, believe me I did it without removing the front of the vehicle.

This is an R56 Mini Cooper S from 07-09 pre LCI. You missed replacing some known fail points. The oil lines for the turbo should always be replaced. The gasket sets for the oil cooler and oil filter housing should have been replaced. The oil filter housing gasket almost always fails between 70k - 90k miles. Had to laugh when you said "the appropriate coolant" coolant for the Mini is supposed to be blue. Other than that, great job taking the extra time to completely remove the front end for the purpose of being able to see everything. You should note that it is NOT necessary to it to that extent and "Service Mode" takes half the time while still giving plenty of room.

Excellent presentation! I'm now convinced this is beyond my means to replace, for a number of reasons. I now have a better understanding what's involved and whether it's worth investing in the car. Thanks!

Great video, very helpful. I have a 2015 Mini Countryman All4 S and this was pretty close to perfect. To those who think they can do the replacement with out taking off the radiator, save yourself the nightmare and spend the time to remove it. It will make things way easier and you will not have to take it all out again after bending the hard oil line.

I have moved the front end into service position a few times for replacing the fan or catalytic converter and other services. I have never found it necessary to drain the coolant. The service manuals do not have draining the coolant as a requirement for front end service position. You do need to be careful of the AC lines. For replacing the heat shield, turbo, and replacing the various turbo oil and cooling lines you do not need too much extra space. If you are replacing the clutch, you will need to move the radiator out further which will likely disconnection coolant lines and draining the system.

I want to add, I do see how completely removing the radiator makes it much easier to get to a number of the bolts. I am in Southern California so I don't need to worry about rust so things come apart easily. If I was in an area with rust, I think I would remove the radiator to give max space.

I think the turbo in my r56 has gone. It is whining on boost then when i release the acceleration there is loud air dumping noise i don't have a BOV on there it is standard. On acceleration i'm getting intermittent boosts and it feels as though the turbo is sometimes missing. How can i be sure that the turbo is not operating correctly before i look at buying a new turbo and starting this job? it doesn't feel right to me, but are there any tests i can do to check. i have an obd2 scanner. it's not throwing up any codes. But it's noisy and not responding when i need it to. Any advice you can give would be great. If i need to replace this video is perfect. Thanks for making it.

Do you honestly truly have to tear the whole front end of the car off just to get to the exhaust manifold where the turbo is, because if that’s the case I would never buy a mini Cooper. And the mechanics are going to love it because you can charge out the butt per hour
@chrissands6332
@chrissands6332 2 жыл бұрын
You don't need to take it all the way off. After removing the bumper cover he could have just removed the 2 bolts each side underneath for the bumper support, and the 2 bolts on each side up top for the radiator support. At that point you can pull the whole front end forward about 6 inches and have plenty of room. Without that extra room you would never be able to get the heat shield off in front of the cat. Honestly, putting it in "service mode" (pulling the front out a few inches) only takes about 20 minutes. But saves so much time beating up your knuckles. For the purpose of this video, it made it extremely easy for us to see everything.

I should add, I own an 09 R56 Mini (same model in video) and in my 8 years of ownership, doing 90% of the work myself, Service Mode is is worth the extra 20 mins.
