It's amazing how popular the PL-660 has become. I bought one when they first hit online stores in 2011 on Amazon for $100. No one knew much about it, but I found out about it by just browsing for SW radios on the site. Two years later, almost every SWL I know wants one and it's even going for about as high as $150 on Amazon now. Still worth every cent spent.

Hello Tom, Once again your great reviews are on the verge of making me buy a new radio to add to the 6 I already have!! I just got a County Comm GP-5/SSB and it's pretty cool and a nice radio for not being much bigger than a King Size 3 Musketeers candy bar from your local 7-11!! After seeing on the Official SWL Channel (You Tube) what a great radio the Grundig G5 is, I thought about getting one. They are hard to find, one on eBay for $115, but in my research I found the G3 replaced the G5, so I am now checking them out. One thing I like about the G3 is that the time is displayed along with the frequency and other details on the LCD panel, as well as all the other little features you have discovered on it. Yep, guess I'm gonna get a G3 to add to my collection which includes a Tecsun PL-660, Tecsun R-9012, Grundig S450DLX, Kaito KA 550, County Comm GP-5/SSB, and can you believe it, a BayGen Free Play Am/FM/SW radio made in South Africa for use in the 'bush' where there is no electricity or store to get batteries!!! Thanks again Tom for your GR8 reviews, you have made me buy several radios!!!! -Doug

Thanks for the comment. I have to agree with you about the Sony radios. I have a few that are quit old but still work perfect. As I remember they sold for over $300 each.

I had owned one of these radios for a little while. I had to return it to Radio Shack after sync failed to locked to a signal and static would pop up whenever I would touch the radio. I've heard the later models had these issues fixed and glad to hear you were able to get a G3 thanks to your viewers. Hopefully you'll get a chance to try out a Tecsun PL-660. As a owner of that radio, I will say it's the best radio for around $100.

Hello everyone, a little word about the rubberized finish on the case in 2020. It felt sticky and there were traces of solvent runoffs from the rubber when I pulled it out of the original plastic wrapping. A little disappointed about it but it was to be expected. I purchased it a while ago, used it with joy and expectations, then stored it back for future enjoyment. Fast forward today, pulled it out for fun, found this amazing gentleman and his 7 years old review; on a Friday night after work and a pint on the table, that made my day! Cheers

If you clean up the sticky parts as best as possible, spray some matte finish clear coat over it to seal it up and stop being sticky. There’s other methods out there but this works great for me, just don’t use acetone or a strong paint thinner, it’ll do more than remove the sticky covering.

I never seen this review of the G3 but I have seen your review of the new Satellite radio that is replacing the G3. The G3 is by far a better radio than the newer model and the new one shouldn't be named a "Satellite" radio. Tom's reviews on this radio is excellent!

I use many different antennas. My best for shortwave right now is the MegaLoop (MLA-30+) antenna. You can see it in my Amazon store. The link is in the description of this show above.

Bad on Aircaft band and with a long wire antenna AM band bleeds on SW. Had to switch to local and not DX. Found one free at a church free store with the AC adapter.

Nice vid! Grundig makes nice portable radio's I have the Grundig Yacht Boy 400 .. with SSB.. modded it to use with 18650 batteries.. doesn't has the airband though..

HI...I have this radio...and it developed an issue where the volume would cut out on one side of the headphones and slightly twist the circuit board and it would come back...I THINK it was a IC that one pin was not soldered right so I got that fixed...my question is how loud does your radio get to listen to it comfortably..mine is around 17..but at 10 I cant even hear it...is this RIGHT??? Thanks

Using earbuds mine is fairly linear. I would think it would depend on what you are using for headphones.

Distance is the normal sensitivity. Local is reduced. Helps keep strong local stations from bleeding over from adjacent channels.

I got my radio grunding g3at goodwill and I pay $3 dollars it was cover with a very sticky melted stuff like sugar but I did it clean very good and looks like new and works perfect.

The easiest way is to listen to various stations on each band. Depending on where you live, you should easily receive stations on MW and FM bands. The other bands will be harder to received stations again depending on where you live.

Unfortunately, Sony is getting out of the SW radio game. After reviewing these new ones, it seems the fight is between the Grundig G3 and Tecsun PL-660. Both have their own set of problems. I decided to get the PL-600 since it doesn't have birdies across the band like the PL-660. The Grundig G3 audio was noticably poorer audio than Tecsun, so it was out too. We'll see how many weeks its lasts.

I checked out this radio on Amazon and the Grundig G3 radio is $224.95 NOT $100.00 as you said in on your video. Today is NOV> 5th 2014. WOW! That's a lot of inflation for one year. Guess I can't afford that radio now.

You are correct on the price but it is not due to inflation, it is due to the fact that Grundig was bought by Eton and Eton is no longer making the G3 as stated in the Amazon ad. Eton is coming out with a replacement called the Satellit but it still not available yet. You will also notice many of the other Grundig radios have jumped in price. I was lucky and got my G3 on closeout sale. Tom

I have been into shortwave for about the last 13 years and I have noticed the radios of today are NOT of the same quality of yesteryear. Adding to that the sheer numbers of SW radios has also dropped. Soon there will be even less to choose from. 2 years ago or so I bought the Eaton E-10 which is OK but the charger in the radio quit working and the wall adapter too. I can only run it on batteries now. BUMMER!

Seems all these cheap chinese SW radios work for a short time. Kaito, Degen, Eaton, and maybe Tecsun too. You are much better off getting an older japanese SW radio that will last years, not weeks.
