In this show I attempt to show you advantages of using an external antenna over an internal antenna. The key is bringing in the signal from the antenna via shield coax cable to your radio.

Tom, I had great results like you did just taking my 909x out of the house and just stepped outside the house with it as it made a big difference just taking it out on our porch and away from the electrical noise we have in the house. You would not believe how well reception improved for me by simply doing that as I tried China Radio like you suggested and could not get it and stepped outside and was able to pick it up nicely. Also picked up Radio Australia as well even better. Just thought I would pass it on for those that have great weather and need an excuse to get outside with their radios and don't have a nice antenna setup like you yet. Of course it helps if your neighbors are not close as well that could mess with your reception as well.

I think the "jammer" noise sounded like it a didgeridoo to me. I think it was part of the broadcast.

I agree with Cameron's assertion the the background noise is actually digeridoo and used to create ambience within the programme presentation. Closed loop antennas fair better in noisy conditions, my T2FD always has a lower noise floor than my random wire antenna, I would have been curious to see how your loop would have performed on the day.

Thanks for your comments and support. I briefly hooked up my little loop antenna but it did not help much. Tom

. you must pick one....either a Tecsun pl 660...or the Eton 550... . which one do you pick? .
@hamrad88

That is one of those tough questions. They are very different but if I had to pick just one it would be the 660. I would have to do a show to explain why. Hmmm maybe not a bad idea. Tom

Very interesting Tom. Any chance of a show about your external antenna set up? I'm looking into that subject myself but I don't have a backyard to use as I live in an apartment. Any suggestions?
@hamrad88
@hamrad88 10 жыл бұрын
I did a video about six months ago showing my external antenna. Don't remember the show number. An external antenna like Sangean reel antenna might help if you do not have too much interference in your apartment. I have a video on that antenna too. Sometimes the problem is that your whip antenna is just not long enough to tune to lower part of the shortwave band. Adding 20 or 30 feet of wire to your whip antenna could help. Tom

Does 9.750 out of Cuba broadcast at 8 am your time? I believe it does, and if it does, it is almost certainly a relay of the Beijing Hour that we recorded at 7 pm over here.

I am surely no expert.. I own that radio too. I've always thought... that the pull up antenna is a FM/SW antenna and the bar on top of the radio that will turn is the actual AM antenna. It's marked MW/LW Rotatable antenna. And to get to AM mode you have to push the MW/LW button to activate the AM band. But like I said, I'm no expert.. the pull up antenna may very well be for AM too. The rotatable bar too.... has a 1/8" connector for a external to plug in there.
@hamrad88
@hamrad88 7 жыл бұрын
You original assumption is correct. The bar antenna is for LW/MW and has a connector for an external antenna for those bands only. The telescopic antenna is only for FM/SW. The connectors for these bands are on the right side of the radio. Remember, I am no expert either. :)

They are actively looking for things for my show. Broom stick antenna should be coming up soon if it ever stops raining. I feel like I live in Seattle. We have rain every day for the past two months. This morning I had to mow the lawn in the rain! :) Tom

Its not uncommon for Radio Australia to be jammed by China. I agree that does sound like a didgeridoo though. I rarely am able to hear the Chicomm jammer from my QTH as the RA signal is really strong here on 9580 & 6150 in local mornings.

Hi Tom. Great show. A while back, I built one of those "PA0RDT Mini Whip" active antennas. Here is the link: www.radiopassioni.it/pdf/pa0rdt-Mini-Whip.PDF . It performs very well. Very low noise. I installed it on my tower at the 20 ft level. Mainly use it on the Kenwood R-1000. Some of your followers may want to build one up, pretty easy. 73, Randy, w5kcm
