I was looking for a small tabletop shortwave radio to put on my workbench and found this old Radio Shack DX-394. There are a number of modification to improve this radio. Check out the following website for instructions.

The Radio Shack DX 394 is a Great Little Shortwave Radio. Just have a Long Wire on Mine......Love it!!!

This is one my favorite SW radios, bought it soon as I laid eyes on it at Radio Shack lol.... owned it decades now, I have the B version. I thought It was the coolest radio at the time ..... I'm going to keep mine all original and see how long it last before mods or repair. The mods themselves are just minor nit picking stuff, the radio holds pretty good on it's own.

I have 2 of these radios both model B the one is original other shotky diode and capacitor replacement and the purple wire cutting and wow it's an amazing better radio. Also previous owner fitted an FM board fitted with squelch control on the back. It's perfect for CB radio UK. All in all a far superior radio.

The Sangean is ten times better. But I would not leave my Sangean out in my workshop that reaches temperatures of over 100 degrees in the summer.

My radioshack dx-398 when I'm on the FM band the clock goes back 01:12 for example I correct the time to 10:00 after a few seconds the clock changes to 09:12 minutes only in FM RDS. Has anyone had this problem and how did they solve it, can anyone help?

Interesting radio. By the way, the bands are not that bad for me. All I have is a Tecsun pl660 with some wire strung up in my garage and I am getting a lot of stations.

That is a difficult question to answer as it depends on your needs. Although the 800 has been a very good radio for me, it is very bulky. On the other hand I have older radios that are twice as large and weight over 50 lbs. So size is important too. The other thing is that each radio has it's good and bad points are far as it functions. Lastly, newer radios (in the last 10 years) from China and Japan can vary from radio to radio for the same model. For instance, the 800 when it first came out had some major problems. These were fixed by Grundig in later versions. I was lucky mine I got used and had the problems fixed by Drake. Having 100s of radios it is hard for me to pick just one and say that is the one to get. Suggest you view my other shows as well as other channels and try to get a much information as you can. If you have questions about a specific radio, just ask.

I have this. It is in fantastic condition, but , I can not even pull in local stations. I live in downtown Baltimore MD. I only have the original ant. and am surrounded by high buildings. However, my old Lafayette pulls in local and sw. When I had a Voice of the World DX 440 I got everything. My Sangean ATS808 is worthless as well. I miss radio and my Bose wave radio , even with an ant. is no good. Best Wishes

I,ve had a few of these,they are pretty sensitive, one tip , make sure the attenuator switch on the back is switched 0db or "off "so easy to flick this over when cleaning or fiddling with ant connections etc,but I,m sure you knew this already? cheers, M0TJP, DEVON...😃

Look on the back panel,top r/hand corner.You should see one of 3 things.An 'A' sticker,a 'B' sticker or nuthin' at all.The B version is the improved version of the A model,and is usually the one to go for.The one with no sticker is the early original model,and not really that well liked,but dont worry,the're still nice little radios.

Why most of radioamators have dozens of radios they dont even use?? Got to the next ham fest and sell couple of these unused radios!!! Not to the fat ones that they allready have dozens and want a dozen more only to say that they have them! Sell them to a child, a new radioamator who doesnt have enough money for a new radio!! Do a good for your hobby that is dying and without new blood will die sooner!!!!!!!!
