One of the cool things the DX-200 had over the DX-160 is that the bandspread on the 200 was also calibrated for the then authorized International Shortwave Broadcasting Bands as you pointed out along with the Ham Bands while the 160 only had the Ham Bands calibrated although there were calibration charts for the ISWBC Bands inside the 160's owners manual, which could be cumbersome......

Tom, I had one of these and a Kenwood R300 radio. These radios main knob was not dead on accurate. The second dial had the readings you wanted. what we did in those days, is tuned in with 500kc oscillator and had the bottom knob dialed in at a 500kc interval. On 80 meters we had a dial and the 500 kc ocs turned on and would tune the bottom dial, looking for the peak on 3.5 and/or 4.0 from the Oscillator. When the bottom dial was calibrated we turned off the oscillator. SO don't depend on the top dial, its way off. Another quick trip was t find a station of know frequency, set the bottom dial where it should be then tune, top dial. Henry wd5iah

Great little receiver. Mod number uno: get a good ground point. That wil sort out a lot of HF interference. I have made a three wire cord and plugged in my shack (filtered) powersource and that was a hughe upgrade. Second: I was listening to a SSB station on 15 MHz and discovered that in the CS/SSB mode and the bfo pitch centered, when you switch on the calibration(!!) the conversation come in much LOUDER and much better to follow. That was new for me. lol

An aesthetically pleasing radio to be sure reminds me a little of the Kenwood QR666/R300, hands on radios certainly derive a greater sense of participation when DX'ing compared to the digital keypad approach.

I was given one of them and occasionally use it, but My Sony 6800W beats the pants off it. However, the Radio Shack DX 200 cost approximately $200 new whereas the Sony 6800W cost over $500 new, so Apples to Oranges comparison. Great video, 73.

Although its commonly referred to as the 80 meter band the phone portion is actually the 75 meter band. You'll hear many old timers refer to it as 75 meters phone / 80 meters cw. That may have contributed to the dial being off.

Hello Tom enjoy your channel...I had a dx 150 radio shack receiver same problem but I did not understand how to tune it...got rid of it of course this was about 3 yrs before I got my novice license...always wanted another one...now ive got the dx 150 a.....this time with a manual.....the way to tune this one is set the band spread to the top end ie for 75/80 meters it would be at 4.0 mhz....set the main tuning knob at the top edge of the 75/80 meter band the main tuning dial has a little red dot and you set it on the dot or very close....start tuning until you hear a qso if you hear one above the 4.0 MHz point then turn the mail tuning knob in very very small increments one way and if you still hear the qso above 4.0 MHz then you know to go the other way with the main tuning knob....it is important to only move the main tuning in very very small increments...at least that is the way this receiver works....as a matter of fact I leave the bfo pitch at 12 o clock and tune the bandspread very very slowly..this takes practice and most want to turn the bfo pitch..but I like doing this way.....and surprisely the freq readout on the bancspread is very close within 5 to 10 kHz...I also have a digital freq readout that is tied in to the IF stage but I use it after I have set up the main tuning and the bandspread...and it is very close..dont even keep the readout on most of the time because the bandspread is very accurate.......Ok hope this helps it may not work that way on th DX 200 but it is worth a shot...I also don't understand why they put the mark between 4.0 MHz and 4.5 mhz....try the method I described and see how it works ...and keep up the good work I really enjoy it Best 73 Wayne......K J 4 S Y......

The tuning dial on the DX-200 is not a hundred percent accurate. The last one that I had was about 1.5 MHz off. Another possibility is that you were listening to a MARS net in the 4 MHz range. I know they usually have one in that frequency range at about 5 or 6pm central time.

A loop antenna, if you have room. See my recent reviews. The MLA 30 is a little large but it will work good indoors or outdoors.

Hi Tom, have you ever tried the Sony ICF-5900w? It has a really interesting design with analog tuning but seems more accurate than DX-200 and is said to have exceptionally good audio (non-fatiguing). There is also the very highly regarded Panasonic RF-2200 which is also an analog tuner that gets top marks for reception quality.

This is the biggest mod for this nice receiver: change R102 (56Ohm) for a 5kOhm resistance with a neon bulb parallel. That wil give you a much better signal in all bands.
