TRS 80 CoCo SDC

Today I am opening and trying out my new CoCo SDC. I am going to see how usable it is, how much I like it, and if it will serve the purpose of what I bought it for (other than playing games), which I will talk about at the end of the video. So, is it another piece of modern electronics that make these old computers more useful in modern times?

Don't forget to grab SDC Explorer from the Color Computer Archive - it is an excellent program launcher (using keyboard or joystick), which makes managing disk images a lot easier, faster... and more fun. :) Also, a side mention - if you ever got one of the Multi-Packs (Tandy, Zippster, Orion, etc.) and a floppy drive and controller, the SDC works with those, so that you can copy to/from SDC virtual disks and real ones.

The CoCo SDC is, I would say, the most useful modern thing I have for use with my retro collection.

It is the most useful modern thing I own for any of my retro tech! The Color Computer Archive is a great place to get .DSK images to run on it, and the SDC Explorer which makes loading everything very easy.

Love your videos! CoCoSDC, Switch-a-Roo, 6309, 2MB RAM -- all I'm waiting for now is a GimeX to be publicly released. BTW, if your and my wardrobes were switched, I don't think either of us would notice. hah :)

I am loving all of the new things available for the CoCo, I still have a bunch to get but they are all on my wish list! Also, one of my cats looks just like the one in your thumbnail photo (just a little more chunky).

Have you made any progress getting back into BASIC? I found that certain POKEs can make things run a LOT smoother than stock basic. Looks like I need to get an SDC and make a Color FOG version for it!

I have been playing around with BASIC a bit, I have also been doing a bunch of BASIC09. It is fairly similar but a lot faster, especially if you use the 6309 optimized version (with a 6309 CPU upgrade).

I have never used xroar. The best place for answers on questions like this is the Coco Discord page, there are MANY people that know a lot more than me there :)

So can you format and copy .dsk files from your PC to the SD card ?

As long as they are Tandy readable .dsk images, I regularly copy .dsk files back and forth between the CoCo Emulators I use on my computer and the CoCo SDC SD card. You can also create blank .dsk files with the SDC for saving your own programs on, which makes it easy to copy to your computer and post online for others to use.
