One of my biggest issues I had first starting out was oversteering while backing. Watching your videos helped me out a lot! Keep up the great work!

You have many, but I’m one of your biggest fans. What I wouldn’t give to ride with you for as long as you could tolerate me and witness your singular level of backing dedication. Also , your videos have the same level of care as your quest to acquire as much knowledge about backing as possible. We are really lucky out here to have you because so many cdl schools are as dysfunctional as anything else in the world of trucking.

I just stared trucking 2 months ago and I learned that real fast .. make sure to point your trailer where you want to go before you start backing up .. I realized trying to fix the direction backing up makes me move the trailer around so much .. feels like I’m dancing wit it 🤦🏻♂️😂 but when you get your trailer pointed where you wanna go first then just correcting it a little at a time .. makes you feel the direction instead of trying To think how to fix the direction 😂

These videos have been a TREMENDOUS help to me in CDL school! Knowing the mechanics of how backing works has cut my learning time greatly. I was able to get pretty good at alley docking in just 2 days. Thanks Shelton, please make more videos! (Maybe some specifically for the CDL test?)

Definitely “use all your available space” is a lesson learned from trucking school and practiced daily as an LTL flatbed trucker. Now I’m an O/O delivering to mostly to DC’s but I use this philosophy even on tight streets while turning.

I just watched your entire series. You're the first channel that makes backing look fun. The set-up is a game changer and you've turned my thoughts of being scared to back up into thoughts of strategic planning and getting good at it. Thanks for putting this together!

Hi ,your vidéos are amazing Can u do how to know ur trailer is line up or straight at dock without the driver Come out and look if hes trailer is littéralement bit crooked at dock ,thanks Keep the good Work u helping lot of ppl here
@AdvancedTruckBacking Жыл бұрын
compare the bottom edge of your trailer in your top mirrors to something on the ground . If there are no yellow lines painted on the ground you might find a seem in the concrete or a neighboring trailer. Try to get your trailer parallel to it.

I'm trying to visualize my tandems when backing I think I got that part but it seems like I don't have the chase part down maybe you could help us what would happen if we chase too early too late and just right
@AdvancedTruckBacking Жыл бұрын
instead of visualizing the tandems, 1. be aware of where the tandems are on the ground relative to where you need them. 2. always be aware of where the trailer is pointing. Where it is pointing is exactly where the tires are going. 3. be aware of how the tractor is pushing against the kingpin. The more sideways pressure against the kingpin the faster the trailer rotates around the tandems. When the trailer is pointing where you want it, get back in front of it. The more of a jack knife the earlier you need to chase or follow it.Turn the wheel maximum towards the bend, or the mirror with the sidewall of the trailer in it. usually the driver's side.

@@AdvancedTruckBackinghappy to hear that, you're probably the best I've seen at explaining this. I use your techniques and tips still and been using them for the last 2 and a half years. If I'm ever in a bind one of your tips will usually help me figure out the situation. Kingpin pressure, using the shoulders of the trailer, and reading the trailer are all things I'm sure I would have never figured it out. I could back somewhat, but I prefer to understand what I'm doing rather than relying on feel.

So I am a new driver for FedEx. I can do 90s and 45s pretty easily but when it comes to swing outs I always feel off and come in crooked/have to correct alot but I manage to get it in with pull ups and corrections. My setup feels wrong. Any tips / advice?
@AdvancedTruckBacking2 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you mean exactly by 'swing outs'. But, you will get better with experience. Just keep developing an awareness of where your trailer is pointing and where the tandems are on the ground. Keep it pointed where you need them to go. Steer it by moving the front corners.

@@AdvancedTruckBacking I think he was talking about how you basically made a U turn. Some do it to the left (hangman) I always tried to center my door on the space next to where I'm backing in (if I'm in a truckstop) or imagine there's a truck there (if I'm not) before I start to turn the wheel. If I do a hangman i turn hard left and hold till I see the rear of the trrailer and then straighten out if I have room or if not I keep it turned until my tractor is away from any object or trucks and snake it in a "S" until the trailer is pointed towards the hole.

I’m a student driver and I just started driving with “X” company. I have a mentor with me and honestly I feel I’m wasting my time. He hasn’t taught me anything and all he talks about is his personal life and how I should run mines . According to him he has a few years with the company and he preaches how badass he can drive trucks. He constantly stressing me out with his preaching and yelling. Also it seems he has a personal agenda and focuses on his priorities instead of mentoring. Is this how mentors supposed to be? I need to stay with this mentor for a few weeks until he approves my performance. I honestly have learned anything. I feel if I go complain, I may not have the job or he may turn around and becomes more annoying. I feel more stressed out with him than when I driving the truck. I have pretty good knowledge since I’ve driven straight trucks before. I sometimes wonder I should’ve just stayed driving straight trucks instead of getting this type of mentoring. Any good advice? I’m all ears. Thank you in advance.
@AdvancedTruckBacking Жыл бұрын
Sounds like a bad situation. It's hard to find personalities for team/training that match completely. You have more job options with Class A than straight trucks. Play some politics until you get your few weeks in and then you can go your way. Just try to get along and make it thru. The experience will make you stronger in the end. Good Luck with it. Let us know how it turns out.
