TRUCK CAB SHELVES + STORAGE! (Custom Truck Access Cab Wooden Shelves/Toyota Tacoma '10 DIY Storage)
I'm preparing to take my show out on the road more often. So, I wanted to upgrade the storage in my Toyota Tacoma '10 with some DIY Storage wooden shelving. This short video will show you my process!
Trucks with access cabs are notoriously hard to transport extra passengers in. But, all that room back there is perfect for shelves + storage! You just need some custom wooden shelves.
I used b/c pine ply to create a three-tier storage system. I avoided making a lot of small compartments, and instead used large open compartments that I can slide big containers in and out of.
The entire wooden shelves assembly is secured to the back wall of the truck cab with self-tapping screws. I went sure they drove directly into sheet metal ribs.
Pre-molded plastic storage in the truck cab is still available. The wooden shelves jump over the spaces and provide clearance to still get things in and out of them, like the truck jack.
I'm mostly going to be carrying camping gear, but I will also keep some tools in the truck full time.
All told, materials came to about $35 or $40 dollars, including Titebond 2 wood glue, and some brad nails.
Thanks for watching! Be sure to check out some of our other project videos.

Excellent idea. I can count on less than ten occasions over the years that I used the rear seats for passengers. Can't wait to see what you do with the bed.

I built a whole custom shelving system behind the seats of my former work truck. It was a 2007 Toyota Tundra single cab long box. For a regular cab the Tundra has a decent amount of space behind the seats. I wasn't able to store my tools in the bed since I needed the space for materials. It took me a while to get it all configured and assembled but once it was in place it made my life so much easier. My colleagues were always impress at how many tools I could carry with me. I even installed valance lighting and a power inverter.

Maybe consider a vertical retaining net from the auto parts store to secure the stuff on the upper shelf and keep it from shooting through the windshield if you have to slam the brakes.

That's a great idea, simple, functional and it doesn't involve modifying the vehicle. I did a similar thing with the storage bins in my estate car. I wanted some storage in there similar to the drawers I see people put in truck beds but I didn't want to modify the vehicle. I found 3 shallow storage bins that fit perfectly in the boot (trunk), they act as my drawers and then I cut a snug fitting shelf that sits on top. Works great and can all be removed in about 2 minutes.

Ethan. I just threw my stuff in and used the back for extras. I wish I'd thought of this when I started doing woodwork as a hobby in 2015. Now that I've got a regular partime business I can do this in my x-cab lol

I just got another truck with a crew cab, so I want to get my tools out of my real nice new truck. I'm thinking something similar to this, but a big "hole" accessed from the top for extra clothes and whatnot and I'm mounting a 26" snap on box facing the passenger rear door, the hole will be right behind the toolbox and the top & bottom be full width. But I like what you've done, you've certainly inspired me. Appreciate ya

The previous generation Tacoma’s the “SR” models were available with a “UTILTY-DELETE” option which meant they came from the factory without those “USELESS” rear seats delete rear speakers and seatbelts price was $1,700 less. However you were locked in to the 2.7 “4” cylinder engine. 🧐🧐🧐 quite frankly all of the the manufacturers of the smaller pickup trucks in access cab models no matter how expensive the trim levels they should all offer a utility delete option

I'm concerned the wood can splinter or pierce into you during a collision. Plastic will flex and crack without splintering into something sharp.

Yeah, a shelf edge might be a good idea behind the seat. I also noted stuff on top shelf isn't tied down. Holes in shelf for bungee or D rings for tie downs would be a good idea, don't want that stuff to launch if in an accident. Maybe the shelf edge could also have a lip to help things not slide.

It’s a type of finish nailer, Linda. But a Trim nailer shoots thicker nails, and that’s what people are often talking about when they say finish nailer.
