My propane "grasshopper" stove wouldn't work because it was so cold. My relished Spagettios were frozen solid in the can. The scoutmaster had a grapefruit that was frozen solid, that sounded like a cannon ball when he dropped it on the wooden lean-to floor. I also learned that you are supposed to place your canteen inside of your sleeping bag at night. My aluminum canteen was split down the middle when the sun came up.

I work in HVAC and one of the things learned over the time is that CO alarms only go off when the level of gas reaches a critical point (Detectors that display the level of CO in the environment are better, and will let you know if there is any at all, but the sensors also go bad over time. I'd recommend one with a built in battery, as they're designed to last as long as the sensor is, then you replace the unit once it dies.), but that CO also builds up in the blood over time by bonding to the hemoglobin and can cause low level poisoning through long term and repeated exposure. I'd recommend finding a way to stay warm that doesn't involve combustion if possible. Even if it involves heating rocks or water over a fire outside of your car then moving them into it. Looks like a fun trip though!

Hey Owen for cold weather camping what we did in the Army was wrap our wool blanket around our feet in the sleeping bag. We were told the feet are the body's thermostat and when they get cold it causes capillaries in the body to contract, restricting blood flow to preserve core temp. By keeping the feet warm we'd keep circulation up and stay warm at the expense of burning more calories.

Coldest night I ever spent in a vehicle was -50 (-70 with windchill) at Denali Training Area up near fort Greeley Alaska. We spent a month out there with the first week and a half living out of our HMMWVs. The heaters in those things barely work as it is and we had to keep turret hatch open because someone was up on the gun at all times pulling security. That let the little bit of heat we had out. When you were in the driver seat you could warm your fingers up a bit but the back two were just ice boxes. Shocked to this day no one lost fingers or toes.

Been living in my 05 Chevy trailblazer for almost 5 years now. It's not bad in the cold. Tarp over windshield tucked into both front doors. Bath towels in all windows ( tuck them in the windows or your heat will leave the inside quicker ) and fill the back floorboard ( both sides ) and put blankets against doors and I personally have a sleeping bag up behind the back seat dividing the very back from the front. Sleep under 5 blankets during the winter and in the summer I made screens with magnets around the sides for my windows. When we got snow a couple of weeks ago I was in my truck the whole time. Just in a t shirt and sweats and quite comfortable. In the truck still, window cracked about 1 inch, t shirt and sweats still nice. In the lower 30's at night still in NW Arkansas.

JUST A HEADS UP - You NEED to have the CO alarm on the ceiling, Carbon Monoxide is lighter than air so rises to the top. If you have it down low then by the time the alarm is triggered you’ll probably be long gone. Stay safe and good content 👍🏻
@atticstattic11 ай бұрын
CO is _heavier_ than air
@jasonw19656 ай бұрын
Where Should I Place a Carbon Monoxide Detector? Because carbon monoxide is slightly lighter than air and also because it may be found with warm, rising air, detectors should be placed on a wall about 5 feet above the floor. The detector may be placed on the ceiling. Do not place the detector right next to or over a fireplace or flame-producing appliance. Keep the detector out of the way of pets and children. Each floor needs a separate detector. If you are getting a single carbon monoxide detector, place it near the sleeping area and make certain the alarm is loud enough to wake you up.

Just an FYI those CO detectors are mostly useless, they only come on when high levels are detected over long periods, days in some cases months, you will be sick or unconscious before they sound. Look into getting a low level detector. Stay safe brother.
@csmith5633 жыл бұрын
NOPE! Had my generator running in the basement, with the basement door open. Both of my C. Monoxide alarms went off on the main level, about 20m later. Had to leave them outside for a while before they Calmed down. OBVIOUSLY, I opened the main Floor doors....Course, mine were the Kidde brand, No idea what his was.
@Andyshine773 жыл бұрын
@@csmith563 Home detectors only read high levels, and will not register low levels below 25ppm, and only when that level is maintained for 28 days. CO builds up in the system and takes a long time to get out, so low levels build up over time. They sell low level detectors for use in cars and for HVAC use for people who may be exposed to CO regularly. The OSHA standard is only 50ppm for one 8 hour day, once a year. I saw you getting really tired early, a symptom of low level CO exposures. Will it kill you? likely not right away, but over time it will affect your long term health. The home detectors are for extream conditions not monitoring levels on the fly. Do a search for a good low level CO detector/monitor. I bought one after doing some research, found out starting your car in the garage and not letting it air out is a bad idea, levels go up to 100ppm instantly. Just trying to help. Later brother.

You can buy an adapter hose and use a 20-lb propane tank with all the appliances that use the small propane bottles. More economical and you won't have to go searching 7 stores for those little bottles.

I like the small diesel heaters you can install inside a van or camper. Cheap to use and will keep you cosy. They aren’t too expensive either.

When I see someone out in temps like that, I can't help but wonder how some of our Grandfathers survived in frozen foxholes in places like Bastogne in WW2 (20 degrees w/ high wind and snow) , and the Chosin Reservoir during the Korean war where it dropped to -36 degrees F ! God bless our veterans.

No modesty in those fox holes, you get a blanket and cover for the hole and get as close as possible to a couple other guys.

@@jadedandbitter been there, almost done that. When you finally get to the hypothermia stage, your not cold any longer, so you feel pretty decent. The getting there stage really, really sucks though.I don't recommend it. I was soaked in a drop in a pond in 20 degree weather, then had to wait to be picked up for around 5 hours in a stiff wind. Really sucked.until near the end. Took 20 minutes under a hot shower before my teeth started chattering, then couldn't quit for another 20 minutes.

I was an LED technician for a production company in South Florida the year the Super Bowl was in Minneapolis. Went there to build a decent size LED wall and enjoy the event. The temperature ends up dropping to -17 with a wind chill that apparently made it feel -25...I made a promise to never complain about the heat and high humidity ever again 😆😆😆

Put hot water in a Gatorade bottle. Because they don't leak and put it in your sleeping bag. At night, you'd be surprised how much heat that will put out. Hand warmer's footwarmer's body warmers. They really do work for 8 10 hours, give me a try.

You can run your truck all night. I've done it many times. Semi drivers run their trucks 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. shut them off long enough to fuel and do a pre-trip. As long as the engine is in good shape it won't hurt it, just keep the fluid levels up.
@Chris-D93 жыл бұрын
Semi drivers are driving diesels, which are a more robust engine than any gasoline out there. Most of them idle all night so their fuel doesn't gel up, but whether you have a diesel or gasser, prolong idling will cause excessive damage. Fuel doesn't fully combust at idle speeds so you're gonna deal with more carbon build up and oil burn. Not to mention if you're sleeping in a fully encapsulated bed of a truck with the exhaust running underneath you, it'd be who of you to make sure there isn't any exhaust leaks or updraft from your tailpipe.
@meldwin84393 жыл бұрын
@Chris agreed, and not only that, diesels idle with much much better fuel economy than gasoline engines.
@Kings_Gambit_243 жыл бұрын
Yes, But semi engines are designed for that and to run for millions of miles. Your average consumer vehicle is designed for 300,000 miles at best.

I never thought -19°F Fahrenheit was that bad. Turns out it is -28°C Celsius...
@jlondon14413 жыл бұрын
Yeah, anytime Fahrenheit gets to negative numbers it’s freaking cold. Commercial walk-in freezers are supposed to stay around 0. On the scale, 0 is as cold compared to the freezing point as 64 is warm. -18 is just insane without real prep. His setup seems fine down to 0, but to go further needs just that extra push. Heavier insulation and/or better ventilation and a real heat source like a small wood stove, radiator or maybe a heat sink inside sleeping area that gathers heat from engine system during operation and dispenses overnight. It is a nice looking area with that fake grass and the way he did his roof.
