Work for Werner currently, only in it for the year then I'm out. The pay wouldn't be to bad "for beginners" if they actually kept you busy!! I sit for an average of a 1 ¹/2 days a week PLUS my 34hr reset. So 3 days out of 7 your not working. They treat you like shit, dispatch treats you like your dumb, they don't get you home when you request to be home. Both times for Thanksgiving & Christmas they screwed me over ,"Christmas was a really big fuck you". Terrible

I used to work for Werner 7 years ago. I was with them 8.5 years and it was ok. Nothing has changed it sounds. I now work for estes express and make over 100k annually. They also put me in a hotel every single night that company pays for! CLC Guaranteed! I never sleep in the truck. Drivers, there is life outside of werner. Don't let them use you to get rich. There is far better companies to work for and more money to be made.

Yeah but that's line haul. And running overnights. Hotel everyday. Day sleeping. Not everyone enjoys the vampire life. I left estes recently and I'm BACK with Werner. Set my driving hours, pay is slightly less but I live on the road so I have no bills and no debts. So it equals out. Not everyone has a family guy life. You can knock being on the road but like I said single people do exist, and don't mind staying out for weeks. Currently I'm 18 days out, and 5 full days home time. In a nice hotel relaxation. Oh and no more night driving or p&d labor. I'm an experienced driver with 2 years OTR experience so I'm getting more per mile than he is. And that 100K you make is really probably 80K take home after uncle Sam. I had $2460 in monthly bills being home daily with Estes. Now I don't have those bills anymore because I'm back with Werner. I have a $$ goal and being OTR I'll get there quick, and home buying. I'm a single guy again currently, so yeah I'm ok with OTR. Sometimes you local guys speak like we OTR guys get no respect for being OTR. We don't knock y'all locals for being local, don't knock us for being OTR. Not everybody wants to be home everyday. Not all of us want to run 11-12 hours p&d, 5 days a week, and burnt out every single weekend. Not all of us wants to run line haul overnights and have to force sleep during daylight hours. Because that's exactly what LTL local is. I'm sure I'll go local again but definitely not LTL again. Maybe fuel. Hey OTR guys keep rollin!!

I have been with them 7 years and I can tell you first hand they have more downs than ups most of the time. Only reason I've been with them this long is because I needed a local route and not very many in Wyoming without pulling doubles, hauling fuel or running to death for wal Mart DC. When I went from teaming otr to local they gave me 37cpm (2015) and was great for being a somewhat new driver a few months later they took it away said I wasn't supposed to make that much and in the drivers handbook it clearly says pay can change anytime without notice and if you don't think it will happen believe me it has more times than I care to count not so much cpm but there's also nothing in fine print for layovers, breakdown or weather delay pay. It was $50 when I started it has went up to $80,$75 back to $50 and recently was at $100 then they took it back to $75 and said Werner was just helping drivers out for awhile with the $100 no one mentioned anything about it being temporary there's no financial stability here. Your average of $900/week is highly unlikely in winter months running thru the west I live in Wyoming where it can take 3 days to get across just because of the wind and Werner seems to haul a lot of paper weight freight. Let's not forget Wyoming is one of the worst states to travel in winter months so not only do you have wind to worry about but you have to factor in how far can you drive safely. You'll see good checks on decent weather weeks but don't expect layover pay to stay the same and you often time have to keep on them about any reimbursements they don't always pay you back when you need truck supplies or load straps. I recently started doing floater position basically between local and regional otr only because I wanted to quit and go somewhere else that had home weekly because Werner doesn't offer much in my area this is what I currently do but I'm often sitting still and ready to leave again I have nearly 700,000 safe miles and Werner doesn't respect anyone who's not a million miler. They don't care if you park the truck for weather but don't expect them to give you much for sitting even on a short week they don't give much extra if any. I've had about several different fleet managers in 7 years and every one of them is different some will willingly help you out on a rough week some of them won't even care. I've even had one that was harassing me for being tired and stopping to sleep running nights only time they take you seriously is when you've been here a long time and tell em you're ready to quit I've had that song and dance so many times because I was trying to be around for the little guy at home. It's exactly what every experienced driver will tell you a starter company you won't advance much over the years the benefits on the other hand are great but you have to pay for them don't expect to get rich here it won't happen.

I started with Werner also, and honestly I can't bash the company. Yes there were some very difficult challenges but overall the company tried to do right by me. The breakdowns and lack of breakdown pay? Is why I ended up leaving plus a situation with an account I was on that I requested them to give me back my guaranteed wage (Furguson Account) and they said they couldn't do it and then turned around and made the guarantee a permanent thing after I left! It was crazy! Your fleet manager can make your driving experience a good one or a nightmare. Like I said, I can't bash Werner as a company, but there are a lot of cogs that make that wheel go around.
@TheJoyofTrucking3 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct!! Your fleet manager and dispatch team really influence the experience at the company. Werner is a big company and that has both advantages and disadvantages. And then there are issues that can be encountered anywhere in the trucking industry. And now with the chip and parts shortage we think it’s going to get worse for break-down times. Sorry about the shenanigans with Ferguson account. We’ve met a number of drivers that spoke highly of it. But sounds like a serious piss-off to have them tell you ‘no’ and then change it after. Bad timing! But, we agree, despite issues here and there, we still think it’s a great company, with numerous advantages, particularly for new drivers. How long were you with Werner? 55k a year just starting out in a new career is fine. It will only go up from here whether it is with Werner or somewhere else. My first year OTR driving pay was almost $25k less than it was in my 5th year with the same. I was with a smaller "mega" company. Besides pay increases I learned how to be more efficient at my job and to avoid certain pitfalls. I have since left that company and they had a substantial raise after I left so it would have continued to grow. Prior to getting into truck driving I had a career job with scheduled pay steps based on tenure. I retired from there. When I started that previous career job my pay started much lower than someone at the top step. You cannot compare the income of a new truck driver with a driver that has a few years under their belt. It is all about perspective.

@TheJoyofTrucking2 жыл бұрын
70 hour clock usually runs out on 6th day. Then we take a 34 hour reset and start at 6am after the 34hours are up. So it’s often more than the 34.

Net or gross $983? I’m confused. You said net take home but the math was based on gross. Or did I not hear it right? Anyways very informative. I appreciate your being full disclosure with us. I’m 46 and at a crossroads in my life. I’m a good income but I hate my job. And I’m thinking of OTR.
@TheJoyofTrucking2 жыл бұрын
Net average was the $983. Update. Net earning for 2021 from March 3 to end of December came out to $40,000 net. Remember that different people will have different deductions. Also, after some experience and specialization you can definitely make more money. OTR is challenging in many ways, but Kevin loves driving and we love seeing the country. Good luck with your decision.

Thanks for that info. That answered many questions. One question, are your 32 hour reset scheduled or do you request them? And am I correct no earnings while on reset?? Are you allowed to drive truck to shopping errands etc. while on reset or does it need to stay parked?? TIA
@TheJoyofTrucking3 жыл бұрын
Hey Lance! 34 hour reset is required after you drive 70 hours in 7 or less days. It’s part of your trip planning. You decide when and where. You don’t stop at exactly 70 hours or you might run out of time while driving down the highway. In that case you could ask for personal conveyance to the next safe haven. That might not be a nice place. So best to plan it yourself proactively. You are correct. No earnings while on reset. You can use personal conveyance for shopping, etc, but your trailer needs to be secure. We don’t leave a trailer unattended unless it’s a terminal or Werner drop yard. Not at a truck stop. If you take trailer with you on personal conveyance you could get in problems with DOT if they think you are moving load toward its destination. Also, we spoke to other drivers who were on personal conveyance and their clock switched to driving by mistake. Then they had to start their 34 hours over. So we don’t do it. We take time off from driving.
@jmendozas1973 жыл бұрын
@@TheJoyofTrucking You can also run on recaps if you’re good @ managing your time. There are plenty of guys that never actually take a 34 hour reset since they continue to run on recaps. It’s just better sometimes to take a 34 since you start a new week, but it’s not actually necessary.

Thanks for the great information Kevin, I was wondering what kind of money guys are making today driving, I went back and looked at what I was making as a comparison from 1987 thru 2000 and I was working for a small carrier for percentage pay they called it and no benefits , the pay in 1987 I was getting was 500 per week base salary and the agreement was after 6 months we would get the remainder of our percentage In a lump sum, I would get a check after 6 months of around 10,000 so around 45000 a year , that was one place I had worked back in 1987 and no other benefits were provided or 401. In 1982 I worked for a place paying .25 per mile and insurance and all the miles I could run , If you wanted to drive 4000 miles a week they had you covered and I probably averaged around 40k per year with insurance in 1982. In the 80,s I also drove doing construction work or paving roads, it was all union and it was straight hourly and had insurance the wage was appx 18.00 dollars per hour and we averaged about 60 hours weekly for 8 months and you would go get unemployment for 4 months and you would get called back to work during spring, I would make around 35k doing the union truck driving for the 8 months we would work then collect unemployment for 4 but we would home daily, when I retired from driving around 2000 I was making around 75 k , it was a all union job , I think the mileage was around 35 possibly but when we bumped a dock we were on the clock till reloaded, we just pulled into the company yard got out of the truck and took paper work in, a hostler would take your truck back it in a dock, switch trailers and they would come in and tell you when your load was hooked up and ready to go , so we didn't touch anything we just drove from point a to b, so the rates don't seem to be keeping up with inflation thru the years , I was just putting the amounts I made back when I was driving to compare to today's salary to see how they compare

I got my Class A permit on the 4th of February. I’ve had my CDL’s for 12 years, but that was just a Class B. I’ve been on line looking for a job since the 4th, just because I’am SO excited to find something. I can’t do over the road type stuff. I have a family to deal with. My kids are 14 and 10. And my wife definitely couldn’t handle me being gone like that 😂. Needless to say, Warner apparently wanted me a little over a year ago. A recruiter told me that from Road Master in Orlando. If I would have gone through the trucking school in Orlando, but I turned the school down because I would have had to quit my. Job in order to attend. I couldn’t do that, not with out getting paid for anything🤷🏽♂️. Any ways, I’am just looking for a company that would take someone like me with a permit. I need, I think🤔160 hours over the road. Exciting times ahead🙂

Hey there!! Thanks for watching! And congratulations on your permit!!! You’ve already got a lot of years driving under your belt, so you are aware of life on the road. Looks like you got in just under the wire with new rules taking effect February 8. Our understanding is that most people would still go to a school before getting the CDL and then going to a company. Let us know how it goes! Best of luck!!

Only thing that would keep me with Werner for longer than a year is if I became a trainer and made 2k a week.
