I'm glad people can learn how to shift without getting a smack on the head and cussed at for doing it wrong on their first try 😂

Driving a dump truck short distance back and forth broke me of double clutching lol 😆

Don't think I will ever touch a truck in my life but I'm still intrigued by stuff like this 😃

I actually didn’t know double clutching was a thing! I thought the clutch was useless besides starting and stopping, my uncle taught me how to drive a truck in a bull hailer around the farm when I was a kid, explained floating gears really well and that was basically how I figured it out. He never even mentioned you could use the clutch to shift in a semi. I’m still not a great truck driver by any means but pretty funny to figure out the way most people learn I didn’t even know existed lmao, I bet double clutching woulda made my life a little easier a couple times, especially figuring out downshifts

I’ve never even been inside a truck, but this is fascinating stuff. Great explanation! I just assumed these shifted like cars with manual transmission, wasn’t aware of floating or double-clutching. But my question is: why double clutch rather than just hold the clutch in while taking out of one gear then putting in another gear, like when driving a car?

excellent explanation, thank you. I'm tired of being a wannabe trucker, I want to be a trucker.

I was taught floating gears since day 1, I can’t imagine myself double clutching all day city driving with all the traffic, stops, light.

My teacher is teaching me to float gears instead of double clutching and I can’t help but feel like I would have my cdl by now if he STARTED with double clutching. “The guy knows the teacher” so he doesn’t have to teach double clutching but it just seems like I would get my cdl faster if I start with the double clutching.

good comment about the Volvo drivers...I see it all the time with many people and it drives me crazy. we teach the double clutching to our classes

i learned double clutching in school, got to my first job and within 2 weeks i quit double clutching and went to floating. being a local driver i just cant do the constant leg maneuvers pushing in the clutch. taught myself how to float and thats all she wrote!

Love your videos! I love floating gears, I learned double clutching first because of school I went to. But floating gears is so much easier!

Not a bad explanation. I’d add progressive shifts - as in - from low gears , you only need to raise the RPM to 1100-1200 to shift, and then ‘progressively’ higher.. Apart from that, we’ll done. My foot is now up on the dash, hammer down.

You should make a progressive floating video

Good video! I learned floating the gears on a 9 speed eaton fuller in a gradall excavator, got my class A and fdot said because I didn’t train in a manual truck I’m restricted🙃

Long as you use the tach and match engine speed to road speed, bringing speed down enough in the higher gear with the brakes to be able to catch the lower gear without overspeeding the engine past the governed rpm limit.
