Brian, fellow that was awesome job calling the 800 number posted on the signal post you set a good example of why that blue safety plate is there and you used the identifying number associated to that crossing and mile post location, as far as the “grain shuttle” ( hss ) the crew had to come to a complete stop and flag the crossing and because of the stop the previous signal aspect is no longer valid, the restart is made at restricted speed 15 mph ( your now operating with out a signal indication) and cannot increase speed until the leading end reaches the next signal with a more favorable aspect…..40 years retired ms~~~

So very glad you called that in. W.W.O.T. had showen how rails were lose and the track bouncing up and down. I asked him if he reports those defects when he sees them. He never responded. Another one said they know that the track is in bad repair. So he just let it up to the track inspectors. I think it ought to be a railfaning law, that if you see a defect, you ought to call it in, to prevent a future accident or derailment that could injure or kill someone. So my hat is off to you J.T. for doing the right and responsible thing!

I'm glad you addressed why there was such a loud noise from some of the joints. Those joint differences were very noticable. I was initially surprised because I thought te new rails were welded. But your description makes sense. Thanks!

@billstill17942 жыл бұрын
I heard that too - those joints definitely need welded before that issue causes a derailment - that would be messy there!

Yeah, JT; my grandfather used to take me to watch trains a LONG time ago. I am in my '70's now and still love it! In fact, I watch the "Railroad Archeologist" down in Florida, too. He found the last remaining rail section that was the connection point to the Florida Keys railroad. That mostly- bridge to Key West was destroyed by a cat 5 hurricane, I believe in 1935. In fact, it cleaned the Island of Islamorada almost off the map.

That Roli from Florida
@wtxrailfan2 жыл бұрын
There's nothing unusual about that joint. It's temporary until a welding crew does a thermite weld on the cut-in. Welded rail is laid in quarter-mile sections and even when laying long stretches of mainline, it isn't always immediately welded at some joints, like at switches, control points, etc. A temporary joint is initially used and a MoW welding crew comes along later. At least that's how it was done when I worked on the Santa Fe.

That was awesome, my favorite spot and the radar gun. 50 was the fastest I have seen so far. On the last video with the cars running the crossing and now this truck, I'am a retired truck driver who retired early just for those reasons. 9:00 Looks like the truck dragged the gate and rotated the entire gate mechanism slightly on the mast. Most crossing gates are supposed to rise and drop perpendicularly to the roadway. But this one got turned so it now strikes the cantilever. The signals are designed so that the lights should flash if any gate is not vertical. That is an example "right-side failure".
@351linzdoctor2 жыл бұрын

Back in the late 1970's, there was a similar where the crossing gate came down on top of a city bus. The lights were flashing, and the crossing gate was messed up. The, train to stop before the crossing gate was on the same track that the train was on.

Thank you for going back to Richwood, Kentucky on 5 August 2022 to record these trains, Jaw Tooth! The shoo-fly is gone, and work is progressing on building the road under the new railroad bridge. The problem with that crossing gate is the second problem with that gate that you have recorded. If you remember, last year in one of your early videos at the shoo-fly, a semi-trailer truck bent that same gate so that it was across the railroad tracks. A southbound train came down the tracks, hit the bent gate, and broke the gate. The broken gate was knocked across the road if I remember correctly.
@louGriggs19442 жыл бұрын
Another great one. This is a good location, shoo-fly or not. I think that's the same gate that got wacked by a truck trying to beat it, and damaged the gate so that it got wacked again by the train when it came through. As I remember, the train took it off. You got that one on video a while back. Thanks.

Those two SB moving at a good clip and if your didn't see it previously you wouldn't have known there even was a shoo fly track. No sirree those UPS trailers gotta fly and within two weeks no speed restrictions. JT got the ball rolling by calling in the crossing problem - don't assume the other person will do it. Just like the dispatcher doesn't know how the gates will function so the train train had a slow orders imposed. Lovely pose by Norfie and Chessie as if they were going to be added to Mt..Rushmore.
