Agreed. If someone came with a forklift or loader and broke the hood off the truck, they may have been able to save it. It looks like the fiberglass hood flaring back up continued to feed the fire each time after it was almost under control with the fire extinguishers.

I was a service manager for commercial laundry and in charge of a fleet of tractor trailers for many years. The guys in the video must have heard me yelling for them to move the other tractors before the fire would spread to them. The guy in the brown clothes should be given the employee of the month award for his work. That guy never gave up. For someone who wasn’t a trained fire fight, he gave it one hell of a try.

Considering that that truck would be gone in about 20 seconds if left unattended he did really good. Too bad the fire department couldn't have shown up 2 minutes faster, that truck might have been salvageable. In the end the truck was destroyed. But they were able to save ALL the other trucks. At my old apartments a guy broke a car window poured gas inside and set it on fire. I heard the boom. It set the car next to it on fire. I first moved my Jeep. While barefoot I used my personal fire extinguishers then about 8 more that were on the walls from the apartments. I was able to put out both cars by myself. A crowd gathered and just watched me. No one helped. When fire department arrived they were shocked that I was able to extinguishe both cars. They said I prevented other cars and the apartments from catching on fire. No one from the apartments said anything to me, the management never said a word to me. Only the fire fighters thanked me. I then washed my feet, put on my boots and left for work.

Agreed, he put in the effort. That tractor was scrap as soon as that fire started, really hard to put those out when there's fuel involved. Passed an enclosed car transport a while back on a toll road, as I was going by I noticed puffs of smoke coming from the center front of his trailer, told him on the radio, so we both pulled on the shoulder to check things out. I grabbed my extinguisher and he did the same, as we approached the passenger side of his trailer, I noticed he was getting set to open an access door, before I could tell him not to, he did, and the force knocked him about 15 feet into the ditch. He was still trying to use the extinguisher, but that trailer was fully involved, there were 6 cars inside, so I told him to get his tractor out or he'd lose that too, I pulled the pin and popped his lines off and he drove the tractor out, a new KW T-680. By then it was really rolling, he said there were 2 Porsches, a Corvette, a vintage Lincoln, a Challenger Hellcat and a Ford Raptor pickup. The trailer was a skeleton by the time the FD arrived about 10 minutes later.

Most of the time the people typing the comments don't have a single clue about any complications there might be in a situation. Like you said, these are truckers, not firefighters. They made a damn good effort to try and stop the fire, even though often once a truck goes up there's no putting it out until the whole thing has burned up. And when they ran out of extinguishers they saved the rest of the trucks. Kudos to them for actually trying to save the truck, wouldve been easy enough for them to all just stand there and wait for the fire department, but they actually tried to fight the fire. @@michaellim4165 that's kind of what i am saying. If employers really cared for their workers like a real work family use to be, the right thing to do would be save the trucks to save the hassle and insurance drama and in return the employers offered real pensions and care about the employees like they use too. Just 25 years ago or so people had pride to work for a company that cared about employees and pensions and the companies actually cared about emoloyees too. I've been here 20 years and most new guys leave in a couple years because nothing keeps them there. They take the 401k with them and shity insurance and go to the next job. They dont care for the equipment and honestly them company doesn't either. They say it was ruined doing business so pass the cost to the rate payer. .... With that being said, My employer doesn't care about us FTEs as we are called now. Full Time Employees. They try to contract us out and find ways to cut our overtime too. They only care about the stock holder and their bank accounts. So, if this was my employer in this situation, we would also just stand and watch the trucks burn. Its true, they don't even care about that, they only care if we would get hurt saving trucks because then they would have a hospital bill or a death to try to explain away.

Wow... That was really impressive- on a few different levels. 1) Workers knew how to use the extinguishers as well as where they would be found in what appeared to be a standard place on all the trucks. Kudos to the trucking company for that. 2) Workers continued to apply agent in a coordinated fashion- A few times I thought for sure they had it but something lingering up top of the hood looked like it kept things lit- 3) When all efforts seemed futile, workers started moving trucks out of the way- PERFECT! 4) By the time the fire side showed up there were no exposures PLUS the fire had been held back from failing the saddle tanks making it a really easy exercise with a little water. The SINGLE thing I THINK would be a worthwhile investment for a yard like this would be a 125lb dry chem wheeled extinguisher with purple K. It would require a little training on- and purple K isn't cheap... but it's 50% more effective than Monoammonium Phosphate (in those extinguishers) on Class B fires (diesel) and in sufficient quantities would have absolutely made the difference. The guys were committed... they just needed the right product in the right quantity- they did it all right! I was sort of sitting back scratching my head at what "I" would do in that situation- The fact the guy opened the hood to get a shot at the "seat" of the fire was good... when it didn't work I might have considered putting the hood back down while coordinating fire extinguishers through the spaces where the fire was getting air. With the hood down, you limit the air getting to the fire and continue to slow its progress but even then it would have depended on guys doing exactly what they did with the hood up- and it may not have worked either... Really, really great job to those guys. If I was a fire chief there I'd be looking really hard at some sort of acknowledgement to this company and dedicated group of workers who put so much effort to safely contain the fire until help arrived.

All of these comments critisizing the guy in the brown uniform. He's probably never been trained to fight fires and the fact is if he didn't take the actions he did the chances are both trucks either side of the one on fire would have been on fire by the time the fire service got there . He showed good leadership skills and probably directed others to move the other trucks and was brave to do what he did.

In Canada when a truck catches on fire, highway maintenance doesn't call fire department. They cone around truck and let it burn. Oil and diesel needs to burn out, 42L of oil and 200L of diesel. Putting water on a truck fire makes a bigger environmental mess than letting it burn out.

To address two things. The employees with the fire extinguishers were probably as close to the fire as they were able to tolerate without getting burned. The fire hose was a straight stream initially to dissipate as much heat as possible. It's the high heat in the burning material that keeps re-igniting the flames. Remove the heat and oxygen and the fire goes out, removing the fuel source in this case was not an option. All the employees involved should be commended, they risked their safety to move the trucks and deal with the fire to help arrived.

Why did they throw the used extinguishers on the ground and kicked them towards the fire tho? Can they not explode?
@patrickinottawa27
@patrickinottawa27 8 ай бұрын
@@ronklanzig7496 The only thing I can think of as the extinguishers were used up they were just keeping them out of the way of the path around the truck, and then they started getting tossed farther away, and it may have started impeding access from the driveway for the fire department, and were in the path of the trucks they wanted to move so they decided to move them back into a smaller pile in front of the burning truck. Not like they rehearsed this scenario, and without any real training you're making decisions and flying by the seat of your pants. The fire extinguishers themselves are static pressure tested to several hundred psi. The guys fighting the fire were between the burning truck and the extinguishers, if it was too hot for the extinguishers, those guys wouldn't have been standing there fighting the fire. I was more concerned for the steer tires exploding, and then the fuel tanks as they were much closer to the heat source, than the fire extinguishers. Fire extinguishers rely on valves and rubber seals, the seals would have started leaking due to the heat before the pressure exceeded the strength of the case.

Every driver, even a beginner, knows that fire needs oxygen to keep it alive. We never open the cover of a burning engine. Open it and try to extinguish it through the slot. Don't lose your head. Remove neighboring vehicles and most importantly, keep people safe. Never scatter a fire extinguisher or other objects as this poses another hazard. etc.

Agreed. They moved almost a million dollars in assets out of harms way so only one truck was lost. This minimized the insurance claim which minimized the increase in insurance rates saving the company a lot of money down the road. I'm betting though some manager got yelled at for insufficient fire fighting apparatus. A 100 gallon foam tank on scene might have saved the truck early on. One of those would cost a lot less than that truck which obviously is a total loss.
