I know when I turn the key in my car, the car shuts down and won't go very far. There's always shifting the vehicle to N from D, That's why the automatic transmission is labelled PRND12. An automatic transmission only starts when the transmission is in P or N and a manual transmission, well, not in gear it doesn't go forward either. Then it's a matter of how fast the vehicle is going, stopping distances required for that speed and how good the brakes are. Standing on the brake may stop it even with a stuck accelerator pedal, the tires may smoke and eventually get traction, but that's better than running a human being or an animal over.
