I purchased the retractable cover for my F250. Having used it for a few years now, I’ve decided I’m going with option 2 (hard/fold) for my incoming pickup. The retractable version ended up being impractical, heavier, and took up too much bed space. Option 2 makes the most sense, especially with the ability to fold it all the way up while driving. Great review btw, you helped me firm up the decision.

I was convinced I wanted the second cover and kept trying to stash away extra money for one. After awhile I simply purchased the a model like the first one you installed in the video. It has been great. Never an issue, only leaks slightly in a high pressure car wash, never leaks in rainy situations at all. When I want full use of my bed it just comes off in like 5 minutes. One day I did an unplanned furniture purchase. Took off the cover behind the furniture store, put the two piece sectional inside, threw the folded cover in the back, and strapped everything down. So simple, flexible and easy. I would totally do the first option again and again knowing I never leave any valuables in the bed anyway.

How has it held up, also is the material thicker than it appears
@enjoylife7030
@enjoylife7030 3 жыл бұрын
@@travisa1326 Mine has held up very well in my opinion. In my neck of the woods we see High 90's in the summer and sometimes below freezing in the winter. It is starting to look a tad dull but I am sure a good cleaning and some treatment would make it shiny again. It is still leak free which amazes me. For the cost it looks like it will last over two years maybe closer to four. At that point if it got too weathered I would buy another one.

There’s probably a couple spots where a little water could get in but it stays dry for the most part

I'd pick the Gator ETX over the the tri fold model. It's at about the same price point. The thing I like about that one is it doesn't cover the stake pockets. I want to add bed rails to mine. The other 2 are made by the same company as BAK and Truxedo. If you watch videos for those, you'll see all of the rails and hardware are exactly the same.

I had the cheap gator trifold on my Ram and it was great, goes on and off in a couple minutes once you get good at it. Recently I bought a really cheap Tyger soft roll up cover for my Tacoma and it's way better built, easy to install, and never has to be taken off. I'm never spending $500-$1000+ on a bed cover, I'll stick with soft rollups from now on.

The dick who buys the $2000 cover will brag about spending $2000. The person who like me who would buy the $200 cover would just use it and be happy. My choice in "Cheap Covers" are made by Estang. The cover comes off without a fuss and the truck bed is used like it should be. I have the original one I bought for my 2010 Ram and for my 2018 Ram it still looks new. So in ten years I spent less then $550 and I have two bed covers on two different trucks!

One thing I'd like to point out, is, for the hard folding cover, because it can only be opened from the inside it doesn't need it's own lock. The lock on the tailgate protects the latch, and therefore if your gate is locked so is your cover. It is plenty secure.

Thanks for the details. I had a low end soft cover that lasted about 4yrs until it blew off while driving high speed on a highway...yea, that happened. Fortunately, no one or thing was hurt. Now finding the "better" products on the market today are making it challenging to be satisfied due to a lack of them being 'simple'. Also, finding deck rail systems from the truck manufacturer are playing into the install and functionality of these current covers. May just stay with a cheap cover again. Easy install, full use of the stock deck rail, and easy to remove when needing the full bed....

I actually bought the second and it was fantastic but after about 7 years the material between the metal sheeting started to get water logged to the point that it was extremely heavy to use. Framing also started to loosen up making it tougher to align to close. I do admit it was fantastic up to that point. Worked great for my fifth wheel and was easy to use and secure.

Great video! You really helped make my decision. I'm downsizing from a Tundra to a Tacoma. I was really considering the retractable cover, however you really hit home the room I would lose if I did that. I'm already losing a sizable space from downsizing to a smaller truck. I've had varies covers for different trucks. I had a snap on cover for my Dodge Ram. That one was nice because it was easily removable. But in the winter months you had to take it off or on, I had to put it in the sun so it would stretch to snap it back on. My 2nd cover was a roll top cover I had on my 2011 Silverado. It also was easy to take on and off (open and close). But I had issues with it leaking. My 3rd cover I love the best, I bought a Diamond Back cover for my 2016 Silverado and this thing is tough. It's the most expensive but no leaks, and it's indestructible. It comes in 3 pieces, and it's held on with 4 clamps. There is video's out there that this cover is nearly impossible to break into. The HD Edition can hold up to 2500 lbs on top and you can still open your tailgate. Great video guys. I've ordered from Real Truck before, and they are amazing.

I just purchased a 2020 GMC Canyon and, lucky me, it came with the REV trifold cover, essentially the same unit as the Gator FX. It's a very nice addition to the truck: not waterproof, but definitely keeps most of the water out. Secure enough to guard against the casual thief. I will probably use it either fully closed or fully open, the latter when carrying a bike or two. Still have some experimentation to do in that regard.

Thank you for the video! I appreciate the well explained intro of each model 👍 ! My comment to the manufacturer: 1. The basic version can have a better folding design, instead of the existing tri-fold design make it a Z-fold design so the inside/under side of the cover never face against the outer/upper side collecting dust... 2. The middle MX model, instead of the two clearly visible "manual" rods to prop the cover open, they can be relocated to the end of the cover (behind the rear window) so the mechanisms (rods & secure screws) are less visible. 3. The most expensive version, for the price, the design could at the least also include a self retraction (i.e. spring loaded like a roll-up window blind and cab stop at any position etc.) function so make it more worthy of $2k. Sincerely.

What ir they make one of those soft top cover in that cut proof material of backpacks?

I'll stick to the 1st one. Cheaper. Easy to put on. If a "thief" rips it, you got a 10 year warranty Plus I like that you can't fold it up to the window like option 2, because I got a rear dash cam. It'll cover it up along with my vision.

Every system is overpriced for what it is. Furthermore not a guaranteed weather proof system. Better price or guarantee is in order. Brand names meannothing when the all provide same...

I got the Gator soft one and paid less than $200 from real truck. Nissan Titan. Its held very well, no water gets through despite living in a rainy climate. Definitely worth it if you don’t want to spend money. I’ve seen vids of expensive ones that leaked water. I also purchased it because it’s easy to take off and on. If I need to move furniture or something, take off, then put back on.

Hello, good to hear that it doesnt leak! I'm leaning towards the Gator soft one too. I plan to nomad out of my truck (sleeping in driver's seat). Do you think the soft cover is secure enough to hold some not terribly expensive tools, clothes and some foods? Or does it feel fragile and will easily razor through like this youtuber mentioned?

@@Maybelove88 no, it’s definitely not for security. You need something hard for that. You can easily cut this if you want.

Last one is dog shit, it freezes in the winter so u can’t push it in. Had this problem all winter and even had it crack in a bunch of places. Best one is the 2nd option

Thanks for the video... I´m in for getting a bed cover and I had seen the Gator models on Truck Central´s website... I thought I wanted the trifold but after your review now I know I want the trifold! I mostly want it to keep the leaves out of my bed and the occasional grocery run with my wife... (yes, if given the space she will fill a pickup at Costco). Great video!!! Oh, and I have a 2005 Chevy Silverado with 62k miles and 2 light character scratches.

That's what I'm going to get. I have an old vinyl cover with snaps and it's been a great cover for me, but I'd like something more secure and something that looks good too. I bought it off my buddy for $50.00 when he sold his truck. Best $50.00 I've ever spent. But those peragon covers are awesome, can't wait to get mine

@@Marco-fi6gv after weeks of KZbin advertising from them, I broke down and bought one. I'm still deciding if the cover or my Morimoto headlights are the best sub $1000 purchase for my truck. I'm leaning towards the cover.
