Tip I received from a Lumper in New York State when using the Bolt cutter on the bolt seal, don’t muscle it because you can tear a muscle doing that way. Put your Bolt cutter on and push it against the trailer or you can use your stomach. I prefer pushing towards the trailer because it’s easier and the trailer is better than my stomach 😂🤣 Good video

That's fine if you have an ungoverned truck to stay in the middle lane. If you don't your holding up trucks behind you and forces them to get over in the far left which is not legal for trucks in most places. If you got a governed 65-67 mph truck stay in the far right.

I learned amongest the many things I learned year's ago, prior to you even you parent's ever meeting. That no two driver's are alike. They all have various level's of experience, and abilities. In addition to their various attitude based on a variety of issue's they grew up with and or come accross in their everyday life. I learned though there are a gazillion of other driver's I've got to share the road with and in the process accept the fact that though I'm a great driver; I am not unique. Meaning I can only drive one truck at a time and because of it, am only responsible for the one truck. Thus I've learned that because you for just one example are not driveing my truck because your driving your one truck and should be observing the other's. Your main concern should be only your's, any and all reactions of other that are possible are possible. Thus I drive my truck in the most responsible way using any and all of the experience and abilities I've learned which will be different some times as night is to day in comparison to you or other's. Take as much room to nagociate a turn or backing up position as "I" need. Someone perhaps everyone, could utilize less, but in as much as it's me and mine own experience and abilities not to mention my responsibilty. Please allow me as I do to you. To utlize though it may seem limited to you and other's, my experiences and abilities to judge how much room I personally need. Being aware of a possible situation and being concerned are two different things. Being concerned of any and all situation's will cause you to go nuts. Being aware of which situation's to be concerned about and associating a priority to them, will keep you being a happy trucker longer. Perhaps as long or long than I was.

About the backing with tandems all the way back part...for me, it really doesn't make an real difference. If I slide them back before setting up to back, I just shift my setup start point one spot further down the lane than normal. I usually slide them first, but sometimes will wait until I'm lined up with the door (like I did today) if my tractor is not squared with my trailer once I'm ready to get out and open my doors. And speaking of opening doors, I can't stand when other drivers block the entire lane just to open their doors. I ALWAYS leave at least some sort of opening for spotters and other drivers to get by me whenever I'm not in my driver's seat.
@eagle253112 жыл бұрын
For me it depends on the space I am backing into and the space across from me. I leave them forward if I have a lot of space where I'm backing up into because trailer overhang really isn't an issue. But I've had to put the trailer in between two trailers where theres half a foot or less on the sides once i get it in there and that is when I'll slide the tandems all the way back first or else the trailer overhang wouldn't fit into the spot.
@RidingWithDave2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree with what y’all said and I’m Going to start trying to get in the habit of those really tight spots to slide em back. I always make it harder on myself by doing it with em forward haha. Gonna try em back next tight one
@ScottZane2 жыл бұрын
@@RidingWithDave honestly, it really shouldn't matter if they are forward or back, even in a tight lane. As long as the spot is a standard 12ft wide spot and you get the trailer to cross the plane between the two adjacent trucks or trailers, you should be fine. I don't slide my tandems back for anything but dockings. Just don't try to "force a bad setup" by trying to get the trailer into there at a bad angle and you should be fine. But I did once learn almost the hard way that the spots at the Petro in Kingman are more narrow than the standard 12ft. I couldn't figure out why the driver on my blind side starter blowing his air horn at me when my ICC bar appeared to be an appropriate distance from the sight side line until I pulled forward and squared up with the trailer and noticed how narrow the parking spot was
@eagle253112 жыл бұрын
@@ScottZane it's fine for the 12 foot spot but some of the yards we drop in only have 9 to 10 feet hole
@ScottZane2 жыл бұрын
@@eagle25311 and I think that's precisely why some customers require drivers to slide the tandems back before even getting past the guard shack. The risk of hitting another trailer with tail swing both entering and leaving more narrow spots gets very high. I doubt forklift operator safety is the only reason why they require that

I honestly don’t get the whole speed limiters thing. I just find them to be flat dangerous. I drive locally and our trucks are limited at 70mph. Now, our companies OTR trucks are not governed at all. What if you are in a 75mph zone? You go 10mph under the speed limit? How is that safe? I’d rather keep up with the flow of traffic more than anything. Split speed limits cause more interactions between traffic which then leads to more accidents. If speed limiters where really that safe then why aren’t they on all vehicles nationwide. I’ve never gotten a ticket going 5 over or for being in the left lane in a truck trying to get around someone. Hell I’ve had cops fly by me and not think twice. I just think speed limiters are flat out UNSAFE.

It's become not so much about safety....as fuel milage. Moden trucks doing 65mph can get 8.9-10mpg and at 75mph they will get 6.8-8.5mpg...which is HUGE fuel cost savings to Mega carriers.
