It looks like he used a Marlin spike hitch to begin with, followed by looping the free end through the hitch and securing with a few half hitches.

it's not a marlinspike hitch, it's a directional figure 8. you then loop the standing end through the loop, back on itself, and then tie th two half-hitches knot around the large loop
