Haha, apologies for the clickbait title, but it really isn't shocking at all what happens when you skip the coop!
I believe I was in New York at this point, possibly I81 Northbound back to Canada. Portable DOT inspection station was set up and running at the rest area, and all trucks must roll through. Well, a couple decided they didn't want to stop, and guess what?? They get their inspection anyways! Haha.
I don't have sound on my dashcam, so I whipped together a song and dropped it in the video. The drums are from 3 Doors Down - When I'm Gone, and I threw together the rest.

The infamous Preble 81 check. One of the great wonders of trucking in upstate new york. Get off at the previous exit (homer courtland) go to the light.. hang a right... go about 7 miles.. take a left to hop back on 81.. Lafayette will always be closed. Clean shot all the way to the border.

I live just across the line near Susquehanna PA, grew up near Binghamton NY and you aren't lying. Clifton Park on 87N, Preble, Friendship on 17/86 and Nichols on 17/86, the big four on upstate NY. I have run across 86, and seen Nichols open for 72 hrs nonstop, that inspection area is hardcore. They post chase cars on 17C so you can't get around it. Middletown NY on 84 is another one known for hardcore 4am to midnight inspections.

I stopped at a portable scale inNorth Carolina, as a consequence of having to use the rest area's facilities.I roll onto the portable scale, and I read 62,000 pounds, total. As the trooper approaches my cab, he looks at the scale reading, as it goes up, 210pounds over. So, temporarily reading 62,210 pounds. The extra was because a female trooper was walking over to him, and she happened to step on the scale. I leaned out the driver's door and said, "In all honesty trooper, I maybe over weight by just 210pounds. The trooper next to my driver's door, moved away from me, handed my paperwork to the female trooper with......."HE'S ALL YOURS"

We had a driver skip a port of entry in Arizona and he ended up spending over $10,000. Thats lawyer fees, fines, travel to Arizona and a serious tongue lashing from DOT. Mainly fines. Not only that it’s on his DAC report, and DOT performed a level 1 inspection with multiple violations and fines. I hate pulling in especially in Colorado. Its Federal Law.

@bart Simpson if the lights flash on the sign and you're driving a semi with a trailer, you're supposed to pull over at the rest stop. You can just not stop, but you'll get in trouble. There's always someone looking out for semis that ignore the weight station, which is what happened. No transponder will cloak your 18 wheeler, friend.

I had just unloaded one day, jumped on I40 eastbound headed home. It was a nice day, had the window down, music up and off in my own little world. I noticed several trucks taking the tiger mtn rest area exit (250mm) so I jumped in the left lane and THEN it hit me that dot had the portables set up there and there was nothing I could do to enter that scale. I was slowing down as I passed the hill that was obstructing my view of all those officers and one ole boy was sprinting to his patrol car. I hit the edge of the on ramp from the rest area and here he came. Long story short, he asked the usual like where I was headed and where’d I came from and why I had passed the exit...etc...after checking my log book he told me that technically I didn’t pass the weigh station since I had stopped before the onramp fully merged onto I40 and told me to enjoy my home time and sent me on my way. He was a cool dude.

Word of advice for anybody wanting to skip scales. Don't! If ya can afford it go around. Or wait til they close. Is it worth it? Well that depends on the driver. I stayed out of the scales for bout 3 years once. It was nice not having to say hi. But I ended up quitting. Trucking ain't what it used to be. Decided to just get a job. And put fix up my Pete on the weekends.

Im very familiar with the preble inspection lot. Was put out of service after the volvo dealer in pa passed my truck for inspection with 3 bad brake chambers! No air leaks, the parking brake springs were shot. They were still pretty cool tho. We sat there and shot the shit for an hour and a half waiting for my road service to get there. But yes nydot will chase your ass down pretty much every time.

Great video! I've seen this happen so many times. I don't know why these guys or gals bypass the chicken coop. It's an automatic ticket for bypassing the scale, a chance for a full DOT Inspection, more tickets, being put out of service, etc., etc., etc. Why risk it, it's not worth it. I still stroll by the open scales, I've been out here long enough to know which are run by civilian scale masters and which are run by full fledged diesel bears. NY rest area inspections, absolutely will not run them, always multiple chase cars. Same with PA. Shit, Alabama has virtual scales on 59 now, reads the plates, DOT # and weighs you on the interstate, if you are in violation, it notifies a local LEO in the area.

That scale is easy to go around on back roads. I hate running New York State it's the worst! I was Pulled in at 3 inspection areas in one morning going the same direction in NY on i86 between Bath and Binghamton! They asked me if I was recently inspected I told them yes last Thursday they checked it out and said I could be on my way.. I've blown scales completely just straight up not even paying attention. Zoned out on the cars around me. I can count the number of times it's happened on one hand. It's not a common occurrence but I haul overweight daily in the states (like 150k+ gross) so if I catch a violation my permit is gonega and I'm getting my initial violation and an overweight from standard limit (80k gross) Not gonna lie, it's a little unnerving when you realize you just blew the scale as you go by a truck sitting on the fuckin thing out your passenger window. 🤣🤣
