Nice truck! Open that exhaust up and you'll find even more power. I have a 2002 GMC 2500hd std cab with the 8.1, 4:10 rear, and the ZF 6spd. manual that I have owned since 2004. Only had 20k on it when I got it. One of the first things I noticed was how restricted the muffler was as it would get really hot on the bottom side and actually split open while I was pulling a load with it one day. I put a Gibson dual sport stainless cat back kit on it, and it made a world of difference power wise and went from 9mpg to 10.5mpg empty driving, which was a huge gain to me. I also put a K&N filter in and put it on a Hypertech tuner. This resulted in an average final mpg number of 11.3 on 33" tires. The manual TXM makes a difference on mpg if you drive it right and keep your foot out of it. This truck has been absolutely wonderful to own as it now has 218k on the clock. I have replaced one alternator, 4 batteries, 1 fuel pump @ 200k, 2 front wheel bearings, rear hub seals and bearings, and totally rebuilt the 231XHD manual transfer case @ 210k because of the pump wearing a hole through the case and hard shifting. Have never touched the engine, TXM, or the original clutch other than regular maintenance, of which I am very meticulous about. Not too bad in my book.

Most people will never get it. I’ve read the comments that said turbo ls makes more power or my power stroke makes more torque or why’d you do all that and keep the stock manifold and muffler blah blah blah. I’ve owned 4 8100 trucks and there’s just sumthin about em you fall in love with. I have an 04 lb7 duramax that I just dropped 7500 into for injectors turbo tune fuel lines etc but the old 8100s I had never needed more than oil changes or fuel pump which at most were 250 bucks. I applaud you on the build and hope you enjoy it. I’m waiting on my newly purchased 03 GMC 2500hd 8.1/zf6 truck to get delivered from Oregon. 57k original miles and one owner truck. Hope to keep it the rest of my days like this one of yours.

I made 255hp and 395ft lbs with my cammmed 8.0 v10 dodge. That was through 35x12.50s and no fan set up in front of the truck, just heat soaked. Car guys see those number and always say, "Thats it?". Yes, because peak torque was a 2800rpm and came in at 380ft lbs at 2100rpm. Its just all torque all the time pushing nuch heavier duty and therefore less efficient drivetrains. They drive super nice and tow well because of it. Feels much lighter on its feet with better response than a diesel. For all you diesel bro's diesels will not get good milage maxxed out. 03 Duramax pulling a 22ft enclosed car hauler with 67 chevelle in a strong cross wind, 4.2 mpg.
