Today we will look at a very detailed view of how the freight market is doing. Volumes, rejections, diesel prices and capacity but then we will also look at extremely specific data regarding where the better areas are, especially for Dry Vans and Reefers.

Thank you for your time young lady! How can anyone run a dry van for $1.86 a mile when fuel is $4 or more?? Trucks been parked going on a year now.. it would be financially impossible to run my truck for that! Repairs are way too expensive for that rate.. of course that’s me. Say NO to cheap freight!!! Anyway, thanks again for your time and input on this madness.

Well of everyone sits for 7 days waiting for a good rate… in reality, they will still end up taking the bad rate and losing 7 days of expenses and income. I know no one wants to hear that but it’s true. Try to sit and wait for a better load. You will only do it once. Trust me.

Very true! Problem is slow economy and too many trucks. Too easy for anyone to get into this profession both as a driver and a carrier. One truck carrier or multiple. What’s needed is tighter standards to get into trucking and a new administration in Govt that decreases regulations stifling business, believes in drilling for oil here in the US and pipelines and putting the brakes on electric vehicles, stricter emissions standards, etc. In other words, fewer drivers and carriers due to stricter entrance requirements and pro growth economic policies thereby increasing freight.

We need to write the FMCSA, Transportation Secretary, ATA, and OOIDA. Tell them to enforce the rate con law and the UCC code that forbids the rate con waiver in the carrier packets. Once we have transparency on how much the brokers are taking we have the power to push back and ask for a rule capping broker percentage. The shippers are paying record money but the carriers are not seeing it. It’s fairly obvious where the money pot in the middle is. If we all write an email and forward it to all 4 above they might see the problem is enforcing the laws we already have. Transparency allows free markets to fix themselves. But the guy cutting the cake (broker) isn’t showing everyone how big the cake (shipper pay) is. We cannot stand up for a bigger piece when we don’t know how big the cake is. The waiver of our right to see the rate con means if you push for the rate con to see how big the cake is….simply the broker won’t give it up and will blacklist you from working with them. The FMCSA could make a link to report brokers who do not give rate cons out. Then use their authority to enforce it.

Don’t hold your breath, it’s never going to happen. And if it did(hypothetically), that wouldn’t solve anything, you will still have to be the cheapest carrier in a lot of cases, in order to get the load. Low rates are there because there are shady carriers that take those loads at those rates. If there’s no one to take that cheap freight, brokers would have no other option but to *pay more* .

Changing the subject a bit: Yesterday I drove on CA-17 down to Felton (near Santa Cruz) with a near weight limit load of lumber. The cruise control, which I only use to go uphill, disengages below a certain MPH, which it seems is 25. Then, on manual throttle the truck --- with its industry-leading Cummings X-15 --- slowed to about 17 mph. All this was after hours of slowed, sometimes stopped, traffic in San Fransisco metro. Is a 25% higher rate per mile in dense urban areas starting to lose some of its glister? (Oh' and a dispatch liason clerk, who all the while can't be pried off his fixation that running loads is as per Google Maps' times!)
@davidowen9671
@davidowen9671 2 ай бұрын
Dollars and cents per mile is only a metric on the way to gross revenue per day (and shipper and receiver schedules mean the days are not created equal for these purposes); and gross revenue per weekday is, in turn, only a metric en route to net profit per (usually semi-monthly) settlements. Stated a different way, that juicy gross rate of $4.00/mile (say this includes the FSC) on that 200-loaded-mile run which consumes two weekdays will leave the lease operator with circa minimum wage pay for this ALL CONSUMING JOB. Yes, you heard that phrase first here, and all honorable readers should attribute to me, David Owen, any re-publication. No other adjectives really work. This is NOT a full-time job only. It is two full-time jobs, plus a third full-time job as night watchman on truck, trailer, cargo, fuel and your own life, all while nightly parked next to epsilon semi-morons idling their engines to make your teeth vibrate. 24/7/365.

People fail to remember when the US had its supply chain problems cause of the pandemic , many ,many companies began to over order in fear of not having enough supply , so that stirred up the huge uptick in volume and so there was so much freight flooding the market, companies all over were building warehouses everywhere and leasing warehouse spaces , to store the over flow , once every thing began to normalize, companies now had more freight being warehoused, there was no need to bring in more so volume of freight in the market plummeted, and so until excess supply is depleted we won't see a jump in freight volume .

Landstar and Mercer drivers are trying to get that extra 25-35%. The new authorities are just contracted guys taking their trucks solo.
@Prodigal1
@Prodigal1 2 ай бұрын
Well, two things. Immigrants keep coming in and our Govt goes out of their way to help them get into trucking and other jobs and two, many of those new carriers are likely former IC’s leased on to carriers and are being forced to choose between returning to company driving jobs or obtaining their own authority. AB-5 California type stuff.

@@XRP-General_of_the_Army I talked to a Mercer driver yesterday and got the information that he is still leased on as usual. Nobody is urging them to get their own authorities. (what's with that???) So I don't think that is the source of the new authorities.

If you've never tried to get truck parts in Miami, Laredo or El Paso while looking a little Spanish, you might be surprised how afloat you can stay. Also, the level of desperation may catch some by surprise. So for these reasons and more, including the global economy, the rates are not going to get better by any significant margin.

To everyone that loves trucking and logistics, keep the faith. If you live long enough, you learn that life throws us sometimes insurmountable challenges, but so long as we persevere, work hard, and keep the faith, life tends to work out toward the positive. For Miranda, and all here, keep adapting, keep learning, and it will be a matter of time before things start to work out. In life, we don't always get to follow the script we think we have written for our careers, but if we keep the faith and adapt, things will tend to work out. Trucking and logistics is at the heart of the economy, and those that love this business need only strive to learn and adapt, and be willing to move "off script" to thrive in this industry. Many small trucking businesses will survive this freight recession...look to what these survivors are doing and mirror their approach.
