@@Joe-qv6jh once the oilfield is able to plan the drilling. Future will fall. The price at the pump falls. Everything is connected to the cost of energy. Everything has a a premium price to it because of the cost of energy cost to get it to the end user. It is intentional at this point. Fuel prices fall. People buy more goods with the 50% of their income that has been stolen due to the attack on energy. The shippers pay more for goods being shipped. However, people always have the power to shift their cost down some. We are too entitled to stop paying for luxury goods. We will continue until there is zero. Or the inflation is eliminated. I am 80 years old and purchased my first truck 60 years ago and have always owed trucks. All of my equipment is paid for and well maintained. But old customers are going away and spot loads are a disaster. I sold off about half of my fleet last year and prices were terrible at Ritchie Bros. Auction. I look at the RB Auctions results occasionally and it looks like it is till a bloodbath. I have seen downturns before. Two oil embargoes in the 1970's triggered crazy inflation. In 1980 prime rate was at 20% and that was the same year that trucking was deregulated. But I made money through all of these times. I always had a nitch that made money. I transport bulk commodities and they are not quite as volatile as dry boxes, but it is getting tighter all the time. If it wasn't that I have other income, and that trucks have always been my life, I would have sold everything a couple of years ago. I was a director and on the loan committee of a bank for many years. Back in my day, I would have never approved loans with practically nothing down and paying crazy prices for equipment. I hate to be a preacher of doom and gloom, but until all the carriers that are under water or hanging on a thread go away, I don't see things getting better. I'm afraid a lot of trucks were purchased by people who are clueless that they just can't walk away from an under water truck. I put a lot of blame on lenders that allowed people to get in way over their heads. By the time I got into banking, I had been running trucks for 15 years and had survived the 1970's. And I turned down a lot of loans that I could see a train wreck coming. Even though equipment is very cheap now, I wouldn't recommend anyone to get into the business right now. If you are losing money, cut your loses. I was a 20 year old kid when I bought my first truck and I was optimistic. Possibly being 80 years old changes that optimism.

I would only add that after market warranties on a used vehicle are trouble. In my experience they are incredibly slow to reimburse for covered repairs and play a waiting game knowing that you lose money the longer it takes for them to process a claim. Many drivers simply pay the repair to get back on the road more quickly realizing in the end that saves them money. if given the option again I would not have spent $25,000 on a warranty that I feel is practically useless.

Clearinghouse Status and CDL Downgrades As established in the first Clearinghouse final rule, drivers with a "prohibited" Clearinghouse status are prohibited from operating a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) on public roads. The second Clearinghouse final rule (Clearinghouse-ll) further supports this by ensuring that drivers with a "prohibited" Clearinghouse status do not continue to hold a commercial driver's license (CDL) or commercial learner's permit (CLP). Beginning November 18, 2024, State Driver Licensing Agencies (SDLAs) will be required to remove the commercial driving privileges from the driver's license of an individual subject to the CMV driving prohibition. This would result in a downgrade of the license until the driver completes the return-to-duty (RTD) process. Note: SDLAs with legislative authority currently have the option to voluntarily query the Clearinghouse and downgrade CDLs for prohibited drivers and may do so before the November 18, 2024 compliance date. Learn more about the second Clearinghouse final rule

@@truckingwithcliff If it works better for you that’s good. I run a dedicated weekly temperature controlled LTL route. It’s good paying steady money. I do have plenty of time every week at home. But what I don’t have is freedom. In order to get the freight contracts I have to guarantee weekly service 52 weeks a year. I don’t have the freedom of taking a week off. But everything is a trade-off. It’s well paying, steady freight.

You will never understand if you don’t value FREEDOM . This trucking career isn’t about money , this is about independence, freedom , owning your time . Deciding when to work and how hard you want to work for the money you want to make . Since 2022 I’ve been driving only 3k - 4k miles per month . Figure it out .

I really enjoy her information but two things. It’s very hard to find a company to least onto and drive with no experience. & buying older trucks don’t equal more breakdowns. All trucks breakdown. In this market having and older truck that’s paid off is priceless. Cash is king right now.

2023 VOLVO VNL 860, driver was pulling into the driveway of the shipper when the steering box gave out at 2k miles, brand new truck, first trip, First month I made nothing because volvo took a week, Above all that I paid for mobile mechanic, tow, and had to wait 30 days to get that money back. By the time my first payment came around I was already under this was june 2022. Warranty is BS, Insurance is BS. We are actually buying up all of these slightly used trucks cash right now and putting them on the road still. still profitable.

you cannot sell equipment that is under the water. The bank that owns the TITLE to said equipment won't release it until the debt is paid. Or until there is a bankrupcty. At which point the equipment has a lien on it and still can't be bought properly. Until it's sold at a auction.

I used to trade in the stock market when I sold my holdings week later the stock ran up . Insurance is the biggest problem. Maybe short runs are better for you now . Get ahead of the insurance you free up 4k

I think brokers , shippers, and mega carriers are taking for granted and exploiting the fact that there is an over supply of drivers.

Let's "suddenly" stop together for 1 hour, "get sick" or "break down"? 😉 We will do it as in the "earth hour", when the lights go out. And we're going to do this at the same time every week/month 🤨

Maranda, The operational numbers that you are using are excessively high compared to us older guys in the business. For example, your insurance costs are four times higher than what I can get. $18,000/annually on maintenance on a new truck is also excessive. I've spent less than that in an entire year maintaining a good used truck. When you properly manage your money, there's really no need to use a factoring company. As others have said in comments, the only way to be profitable long term in the trucking business is to operate good used equipment, doing much of the maintenance yourself. Dispatch fees are a joke. I ran my own truck for years very profitably and always found my own freight. There's really no point in paying someone to do that for you. Your $1.66/mile operating costs are enormously high compared to the numbers I've produced running my paid off equipment. I can operate in the current freight market for .90cents/mile, which gives me a far greater competitive advantage to you. I've been tracking numbers for a very long time. 30 years to be exact. That said, My suggestion to you is turn in your over priced equipment, go bankrupt, and quit trying to present yourself on KZbin as someone who knows how to run a profitable trucking company.

I’m personally getting out of it. Trucking has always been inconsistent but these last few months have about broke me. If I’m going to continue to drive then I need to be paid hourly.

A company called Aurora is almost done testing their autonomous semi trucks. They plan on having tens of thousands in operation in 3-4 years. They say the trucks will run 24/7 and lower shipping cost for companys. That sounds like the end for is drivers. Should we start transitioning into a different industry?
