I work at a shop very close to a big reefer mega and let me tell you what, it’s scary how many trailers they got parked out on the grass just rusting away. They’re losing so many contracts to all the brokers that can book them for next to nothing. It’s such a messed up market now.

From January 1st to April 1st I see very little increases in my bank account. I've noticed this pattern has happened every year the past 5 years. Jan to April I'm just surviving. And then come April I start seeing profit every week until November. December I usually don't work all month so. April to November I'm dedicated to 2 customers. Jan to Feb I just pull random loads to break even.

I have 10 trucks on the road and have been in the business since 1997....I'm like you and want to be optimistic and say soon..BUT REALISTICALLY...a few issues need addressed. 1) our government is manipulating fuel prices to promote the electric vehicle agenda, so no big help getting the economy rolling there. 2) millions of immigrants entering the job sector and getting pushed toward trucking to keep freight rates low to help off set our crazy inflation costs as supermarket consumers. Imagine the cost of bread if we were getting paid what we really should be. 3) We are tough and stubborn and remember the good times along with liking our work...with the economy slow, there aren't many good jobs to run to instead of hanging and hoping. All I can say is come on November!!

I feel that part of the hardship in small carrier trucking, aside from high fuel prices and volatile markets, is the fact that honest trucking companies are competing in the market with dishonest operators. Look at some of the recent crashes that made the news, that are a litmus test of what carriers are out on the roads. Foreign-owned trucking companies with foreign ELD operators that rig the hours on the ELDs. Trucking companies that employ foreign drivers that work for minimum wage, who live in their trucks and send money home to their families in foreign countries. Trucking companies that own one truck insurance policy and fraudulently use it for 10 trucks, or have no valid insurance at all. How do honest carriers (US and foreign-born) compete with carriers that don't pay insurance and pay drivers below minimum wage? One suggestion to clean up this market is for the FMCSA to require brokers to only offer loads to carriers that are US owned and that prove that their operations and ELD devices are located in the US. Just forcing carriers to have the same standards as other licensed operators would weed out so many bad apples and reduce capacity to only those operators running legally, and not running for $1.50 pm loads.

My buddy works for Minnesota based flatbed company. They get paid something like 26% commission. Recently, he’s noticed the company is taking their fuel expenses off the top. Then drivers get a commission on the net. He’s pissed, told the company to “ make it right” or he’s gone. I know times are tough, but screwing the help is low.

Let’s be honest here the reason we’re at an industry low is because for a couple years owner operators were literally making doctors wages, so everyone rushed in like a gold rush and they’re all trying to wait each other out for better times. Most drivers are used to extremely low wages and so they will hold out for years potentially. Things are probably going to get much worse before supply is culled.

The way I calcuate is 1$per mile is expenses. 70c per mile is my salary, rest is profit. And so I ain t running my operation for less than 2.5$ mile on a 250miles+ trip

I work for a bigger reefer carrier, have that viewpoint to share. Past two months I'm noticing getting a full load has become rare. Most loads are under 30k lbs now. Also an increase in multistop loads has been happening. Miles are much less now too. Lucky to get 2k miles a week when it was easy and expected to be getting at least 2.5k a week last year. The ceo has made reiterated that no help from DC nor is anything in the works with law makers currently to help this at all. Also noticing coworkers on the road empty, deadheading to wherever they're going. An overall increase in going extra distance just get what's worth doing. Makes me think that a small box truck would be in the best position at this time based on load flow this year.

In addition to everything noted, mega carriers are starting to undercut other mega carriers. Not only are they trying to eliminate OO competition with low rates and regulations, they're trying to eliminate themselves. Same with brokers. Same with big tech. Microsoft and Apple led the way. We, small carriers, are to blame for the ridiculous rates in the market today. Shippers are still paying good money for loads. They usually pass the transportation costs to their costumers. If carriers put their trucks on the right area and wait for the right time, they will get a decent rate. The problem is that we are too desperate to get home and to book these lower rates.

By reducing our milage radius and running no more than 100 miles and placing only the minimum insurance coverage of 500k give we are DOT only we saved hundreds. It is hard to find brokers who will work with you with that amount of coverage but well worth the search. We have a dry van and reefer and run watermelon now which is a year round produce and pays well, depending on broker of course. We use 10.4brokerage out of hargill tx

Also I have a friend running his truck under a larger carrier for whooping 25% (using their trailers). Recently he had to take $1 per mile load to get out of Colorado, and realized that after fuel, he got same amount of money out of this load as the carrier. That doesn’t even including the truck maintenance and stuff which makes it he actually less than the carrier. Especially with current prices of equipment, he decided to buy his own trailer and go under his own authority. I believe he’s not the only one that realized there isn’t much to share with the carrier with those rates.

Its important for truckers to set a Min workable rate, and then proceed to take loads above that threshold. Unfortunately most older MC's would rather have their trucks idle, than take loads near that Threshold Rate. which in itself causes more revenue loss. In this market something is always better than nothing, and keeping your trucks on the road, albeit with less profitability will ultimately help truckers weather the storm.

I stay out for 2-3 months and typically go home for 2-3 weeks. This last hometime I got home on February 24 and left out yesterday March 23. I hope it picks up soon or I’m going to shutdown in November and put my truck up for sale. I currently own $43,000. By November I’ll only owe around $20,000. Should be an easy sell with 600,000 miles.

Very generic down to earth analysis , hence viable and realistic. I am glad to witness that the market is warming up day by day in line with my expectations due this year. This months I am in tact with gross expecting to be around 35k. Loads available even in crap areas hence rpm will grow steadily. Obviously most of us including my self stay out of home 28-29 days to break even and make some extra profit. Very basic survival formula.

I wonder how many new drivers are coming to the CDL life compared to the previous years. It feels like the mega carriers continue to hire just to keep trucks rolling and contracts fulfilled. I tend to work 4 weeks and then take 3 or 4 days off each month. Cost are high and revenue is mostly flat or down month over month this year for me.

As long the border is wide open and poor people from 3rd world countries are coming….nothing good will happen to this industry and this country. In Europe was the same story not to long ago…people from Eastern Europe and Africa,Russia,Asia etc were pouring in like crazy…rates plummeted and truck drivers from those Western countries either has to quit trucking or work for a lot less…..so don’t expect nothing soon to happen. Now with internet connections,many dispatch and brokers don’t even have to bother to be in US or Canada…they can’t even be checked by no government…and many truckers from those countries are running with just a temporary working visa… Companies,ATA and Democrats are so happy about it…the inflation is fixed finally in trucking industry.😂😂😂😂

They dont need to make money off the load. They get gov subsides for Training drivers plus being self insured helps. One accident can put smaller carriers in a problem. They buy trucks that they dont have to pay for until they move so a truck can sit in the yard for 3 yrs and never pay a dime. The leasing and Balloon payments helps them pay for the truck out of the drivers pocket. The Balloon payment helps them keep the truck when the driver cant pay.

Everyone wants to know when things are going to get better. I’m not an economist but I am pretty damn old and I’ve seen a lot. As long as inflation stays above 2% the Fed isn’t going to ease policy in any meaningful way. In other words interest rates are going to stay up and until that turns the consumer is going to hold back on spending. This will keep trucking. From growing. I work for a middle sized carrier and we stopped hiring in November. We are trying to keep volume the same with fewer people. The good news for me is I’m making more money than I ever have. The bad news for me is I end up working on the weekends more than id like. Things will get better but probably not at the same time that the Fed is taking a big stick to inflation.

this is a topic i am interested in. how do they or you or anyone find info that supports the stats and graphs. what websites or whatever is used. for example recently trump lost a lawsuit for misrepresenting the value of his assets. i know for sure as a driver alot of companies pull whatever tricks they can to make more money and they misrepresenting things to the public, including bankruptsy fraud, money laundering schemes, antitrust violations while representing to the public they are actually competing inhibiting job creation and economic growth while trying to say that the market influences them but when it's antitrust they have enough power to influence market not the other way around. etc. but to help improve the trucking industry it's useful to find these kinds of infos but at the time to proceed with caution.

We need to reduce regulations on the industry as a whole and drill baby drill, reduce the cost of energy (Trump will do just that), we need to expand and grow the pie( grow our economy) Trump will do just that with policy changes making it more business friendly . We are waiting. You need to look at the numbers during the recovery from Obama's 8 year reign of terror and regulation. Examine the amount of growth from 2017, 18, 19 pre- covid. It will take at least a year to normalize and get our economy booming again after Trump wins the Presidency and fixes a lot of the problems. Fuel is almost 3 times higher than 2018. Now, if we dont get Trump elected, we may very well be screwed all together. We have some people that dont like talking politics, but the policies either have a positive impact on our lives, our jobs, our bank accounts or they have a negative impact. We are in this mess because of policies put in place by the Democrat Party. The energy policies and regulations alone have almost wiped us out. We need to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! It is more than a campaign slogan, It is about how we want to live, work, play. Look at the numbers Miranda and let your viewers see them and show them why the policies affect the numbers. Capacity is not leaving because we all got bills to pay. I'm sure some people can move but most of us don't have much other skills and already have too much invested in this career, especially us owner operators.

I’m an o/o and I need To do is run about 3k miles per month so I can cover my monthly bill, so I can stay alive . I aim to 4 dollars per mile . So far I averaged 3.5 all miles . I can’t compete with cheap labor truckers

Waiting for the bloated companies to break. I can pay myself 60c a mile and run my truck on 75c a mile. So that means i can even take loads paying 1.35 and still survive. The mega carriers can not do that. All that being said i generally don't take loads under $2 unless I'm getting out of Florida or new Mexico.

We owner operator that have truck paid off and manage costs can afford not to be profitable and still survive by paying ourself 75cents a mile. But that shouldn t be the goal. Just a consolation knowing that big companies cannot afford that. In order to breakeven generally they need to average 2$mile. That s why for dryvan We ve been sitting on this average for over a year. This is the rate where if you go lower, some companies will leave the market bringing the rate right back up.

Capacity isn’t leaving because it’s not bad as the numbers portray. I run dry van and avg $3 mile on about 1800 miles a week. It’s not great but not bad enough to park my truck. I’m definitely making decent profits. Not able to save 6 figures is my only complaint

I posted my truck on Truckstop in N Charleston last week, and I got 5 calls asking if I was available. That almost never happens. Also, truck auction prices have crashed. There are a lot of trucks no longer on the boards.
