That H67 was the first truck I was ever in, and I was too young to remember it, just remember the stories. Thanks for the videos

yes and no, in calculation with inflation, while the vehicles may have been more dangerous, its crazy how in comparison, they made more money than most truckers do today, on top of better hours and having a proper union, where as today, many truckers don't make as much (if you calculate inflation), work far more hours, and no longer have a good union (thanks Jimmy Carter)

@546cowboy64 жыл бұрын
Gee ready this will most likely be a long one. I was born in 1947 and grew up in the 1950's so I was there.As a kid I lived in what was called the crossroads of America at the intersection of US 41 and US 30. No interstate highways then and most highways were two lanes. The thing you have to realize is there were not anywhere near as many big trucks on the highways. Those big 18 wheelers were not that many. As a kid when we went on vacation (yes we went on vacation every year ) to Colorado to see my grandparents and family who had moved there. As we traveled and got into Kansas that is when we would see the bigger trucks as the traffic would back up behind them. Yes I said back up as the hills and two lanes slowed you down to 40 mph or less. Trucks were not as big and many were gasoline not diesel their top speed would be run over today. The first time I ever saw what today's 18 wheeler would become was at the Coors Brewery in Golden, Colorado. We used to go there and take the tour and I remember coming out one time and there was this then a giant truck like I had never seen before. What it was is one of the trucks that hauled Coors to the west coast across the mountains. I have not ever forgotten the size difference I saw that day. There is another reason and that is most cross country freight then got to destination by trains. It would be unloaded and then the smaller local trucks would haul the goods to a warehouse or store. Pretty much every town had railroad tracks somewhere close and even where I lived there was a train yard close by. Being in middle America the tracks were like the roads are today. It seems every year more tracks are torn out now and the trains get longer. On another note I had never seen a steam engine as a kid until one day one showed up in our little town and every kid was there and in awe of it. Sorry but I couldn't help myself with that memory. That is another story of how fast America went from steam to Diesel electric. Another lesson for you who don't know is trains are not diesel but actually have diesel engines turning generators for power. So I hope you got here but this was a small piece of the 1950's memories of now an old man.

Question not just for trucks - Why didn't LP or Nat Gas powered vehicles never take off in the states?
@MikeBrown-ii3pt4 жыл бұрын
Probably because the infrastructure wasn't and still isn't there for them. Some farm tractors were also available with LP engines but were never very popular because of the cost to have a farm equipped to refuel them. It's the same with electric vehicles today. In some areas, there are charging stations, but many areas don't have them.

It has, it is the civics that drive (pun intended) the economy, i.e a poor economy will not need the logistics the trucks provide.
@danphariss1333 жыл бұрын
The Civics is OK but they seem to have overdone it. I guess they don't know enough about trucking in the 50s to make a video so they add all this other crap. How they keep ignoring IHC astounds me. But they include FORD? which were often geared so poorly that with the same power as the IHCs in the same fleet would show nothing but fading taillights. Dodge? Yeah I have been around places in the lat 50s and listened to truckers and my oldest uncle was driving in the late 30s and my Dad drove a million miles in the late 40s and through the 50s when the speed limit was 45-50 for trucks. AND with engines so small he told me sometimes he could not get over the hill the first try. He started out hauling hay with a KB 5 with a 213 ci flathead and yeah the photos show they were loaded out over the cab with a 15-16 foot bed. But they sell accessories so...
