I despise the AtA. Also, an 18 yr old flying a plane usually has 4 yrs of training in high school plus military training. Even though I believe he is lying about her age... If people don't wanna be truck drivers at 21, why would they at 18?

I believe that an 18 year old can steer an aircraft carrier. If the 18 year old makes a mistake the bridge is full of officers that will correct her/ his mistake instantly. If a driver makes a mistake in a truck it results in injury or worse death. I cant stand those that manipulate the truth for self gain.

I’m no sailor but I seriously doubt there’s currently a single Master Mariner, Unlimited Tonnage, of as young as age 18 in the entire world. So I’m gonna call at guy a Master Bullshitter. Maneuvering a ship for a while can’t be that hard, just like flying;) but performing a landing, or navigating during a storm with other ships nearby, not so much.

The reason they are targeting the military is they have a proven track record for work under extreme conditions for little pay. ATA and the mega carriers want them because they think they are already conditioned to work long hours without complaining and will accept their pay schedule, thinking they have gotten a raise from what Uncle Sam was paying them.

Conducting operations on a Nimitz class ship is a lot different than driving a Class-A tractor-trailer. On a Nimitz class aircraft carrier, you are not the only one operating that vessel. You are one of around six thousand crewmembers aboard that ship. You have been training with bridge crew in hands on experience. You are not going to eventually "go out on your own" when you are done training. You will continue to take orders from senior staff. You do not have to rub the dock by youself nor do you have to worry about traffic that often. You do your trip planning while in motion and most of the piloting is automated. You punch in global positioning coordinates and it takes you roughly to where you need to go. If trucking gives you an automated truck that takes you to the parking lot of the shipper while you just sit in a seat and plan where you want the automated truck to go on a road without hardly any traffic, while you have a trainer ready to help you forever, and when you get to the loading dock a group of guys run over to your trailer and dock your truck for you... then yes, they would be the same. I have family that were logistics in the army, driving HEMETTs (twenty wheeler flatbeds). They did this at eighteen years old and told me many times of situations where they almost died or killed others. They were young and dumb. The training may have helped them recover from the mistakes they made before they hurt somebody, but the training did not put fear into them to not have an incident happen in the first place. Sidenote: This is a hands on job, get rid of this classroom crap, seriously. It only confuses drivers when they get out on the road. Train the HOS and Federal laws in the classroom, backing and turns in an actual truck.

There are two sides to the debate. Company and independent drivers. Trucker's Coach and other IOs who seem to be against HOS and breaks. Break up the 10 hour break. Drive til you drop and be allowed to too. I'm over generalizing. And then there's folks like me. I like HOS and regulations and ELDs. Why? It protects me from greedy owners who want me to cheat cheat cheat. The first dumbass I worked for coached me how to cheat paper logs, then used to telephone me at 7 am asking me why I was not on the road when I had parked at 11pm the night before. Just my opinion.

This helps explain why i now hate driving and will be leaving driving a truck, carrying with me a bad taste and nothing good to say about trucking. In less than ten years truck driving has gotten more micro management and independence is all but vanished. Technology and automation are killing a once decent career choice. If you’re considering becoming a trucker, you should first consider going fishing and then become a rodeo clown. You won’t get the clown job because those people are highly specialized in their craft and it’s EXTREMELY hazardous. Keep on fishing. Your ideas of being an otr (over-the-road), or line haul driver are wasted. The industry is no longer growing as it once did. The industry is now becoming hyper systematized, automated and skewered by huge companies buying tens of thousands of fleet-spec trucks having no regard for the driver. That fleet spec’d truck is a one size fits all assembly and typically the person paying the bill has never had a CDL. Therefore doesn’t know what a comfortable driver would be sitting in. ANYONE the mega company can find that is not a driver they’ll hire, train for a CDL & indenture. They can save millions in low payout all day because there’s no more need of excellent drivers. The big companies want trailers moved. America is sliced up into smaller regions for company planning convenience. The fleet/driver/planner managers have a sword over their heads too. Keep drivers mileage as low as possible by fabricating a chart of average weekly mileages and don’t ever reveal the actual prices of shipping per state and zip code miles. What short the driver out of odometer miles by paying zip code zone miles!? Pride in the workforce is quickly dying out. Company drivers are no longer respected as they once were. Owner/Operators are being regulated out of business. Ruthless big public traded companies with unwashed board-of-directors & shareholder seats that demand bonuses care nothing about drivers, you or America. They want their trailerloads of “Made in China” product delivered at a specific gate without consideration for Hours-of-Service the drivers are required to observe. That means fewer miles, less pay, less time at home, more drivers at less skills and more untrained, hazardous drivers doing more menial micromanaged equipment movement. I tried training some drivers. Companies don’t want trained drivers. They want trailers delivered. Good-bye America.

Dave why would the spokes person for the ATA need any truck driving experiance? Theres nobody in Washington DC that knows anything about anything so he fits right in. Truth be known there probably are not a lot of people at the top of these mega carriers that could start a big truck let alone drive it. His story about the 18 year old driving the ship is a bit suspicious. Why would she even be up in the bridge? At that age she would hardly be qualified to swab the decks, let alone have had any essential training. That dude is a know nothing with a gift of slinging B/S to others that know nothing about driving a truck either.

Old timers I knew back in the late 70's and early 80's who owned companies (some with hundreds of trucks) could put a trailer in the tightest dock, hop on a forklift and load the trailer, and not only change a tire, but break down a tube type with a hammer and bars, patch the tube and the tire, mount it back up and put it back on the truck using nothing but hand tools.

In many if not most businesses, people in management have never worked in the rank-and-file, actually making the products or delivering the services. If the workers went on strike, nobody in management would know how to work on the line. All they know is what they learned in their MBA coursework. And these people who have no hands-on experience in any trade are calling the shots for the millions of people who actually make the products and deliver the services that provide the revenue that makes it possible for the company to exist. In some European countries they used to have the royalty and the peasants. In the USA, these two classes are called management and labor.

A very small percentage of veterans stay in for 20 years. Most of us aren't receiving a pension. The mega carriers like hiring veterans because of the tax break, they can get a year of our Post 9/11 benefits under bullshit apprenticeship programs, and we're some of the few people who can handle the bullshit of driving these trucks cross country. This will be my last year doing OTR and I will be looking for a local by the hour trucking job in the DFW area while my applications go through the police departments in the area. P.S. Not bitching but you are right they do hope to hire people with pensions and with no children to get back to. It's very rare to find someone my age doing this who speaks fluent English.

I would have liked the age requirement to be 18, but I know plenty of peers that would have been in no position to be behind an 18 wheeler. I can’t imagine the demand is there to make it worth their while. When I decided on trucking, I ran the numbers. The pay has to be high to make it worth my while and thankfully there’s some companies that pay quite well for relatively little work experience. When you’re my age (21), you have to consider that the truck driving profession may very well be automated by the time I am middle-aged. That’s something I’m planning for accordingly and just reinforcing the general importance of investing.
